StefanMUC
How can you say these games were bad for Germany?! They swept the luge! Got the first women's ski jumping gold too! I say that's incredible There were far greater expectations, and not unfounded. The luge and ski jumping totally overshadowed the total disasters in biathlon, speed skating and (although awaiting 4-man event) bobsleigh, traditional German strongholds. The second week produced a wide range of disappointing and even disastrous results. Some sports will struggle for financial support from the government in the future, the minister is already fuming, also at the officials' incompetence in many areas. Athensfan
So we may have our first drug cheat at the games. An unconfirmed German athlete has had their A sample abnormal, B sample being tested. Will be interesting to see if this comes to anything or not. Good to know you're on the lookout for cheaters. Olympic Fan Darcy
Italian Bobsledder William Frullani was kicked out of the Sochi Games after a positive doping test, the Italian Olympic committee announced. CONI said it was informed by the International Olympic Committee that Frullani came up positive for the banned stimulant dimetylpentylamine in a test taken in the Olympic Village on Tuesday. Frullani asked for a backup test that was taken Friday and 'confirmed the positive result, resulting in his exclusion from the Italian delegation'. http://www.aljazeera.com/sport/sochi2014/2014/02/german-athlete-fails-drug-test-201422194919158542.html

Scotguy
Good to know you're on the lookout for cheaters. Cheap shot and shows your lack of maturity well. I am not, but the BBC and other global news agencies that reported it were. And the Sochi 2014 organisers, and the IOC, and the doping agencies, and the NOC'S and those who want to see clean competition in sport.

I guess the IOC has to reconsider its qualification criteria, at the very least. I'm all for inclusion and happy to have the likes of Eric Moussambani, Eddie Edwards or Bruno Banani compete (though the latter with his name change PR stunt went OTT), as long as they have documented participation in acknowledged events, but this story here is really sullying the Games brand. Do we know what these events were and if there was a possibiliry for, erm, slight alterations in the results? If they have cash enough to buy themselves a Caribbean passport, they might just as well have had a talk with an official at an obscure D-rate FIS event in Upper Kamchatka or wherever...It's all very fishy regardless... Vanessa Mae got the fis to add another race last minute so she could qualify. If it was another athlete it would not have likely happened.

So much for insisting that non-Winter nations take part just so XYZ Games can say...oh, we have the highest # of participating nations ever!! They remind of that other fake couple who gate-crashed a couple of White House dinners. And Wow; that was pretty expensive participation for an Olympics for that couple -- over $100,000 each just to have an Olympic uniform and all those credentials and souvenirs!! Other than fooling the Domenican NOC, I don't think anyone was really harmed. Altho it seems they met minimum qualifying scores, so in that regard, they didn't cheat. They merely submitted padded resumes. If anything, it again exposed another loophole in the whole Olympic process. That means the NOCs have to vet more stringently. gotosy
Russian Olympic Medalists Receive Mercedes SUVs The Moscow Times Feb. 27 2014 18:00 Russian athletes who won gold medals at the Sochi Winter Olympics have each been rewarded with a Mercedes GL-Class SUV worth $146,500. The Olympians were presented with their brand new set of wheels at a ceremony on Thursday, which was also attended by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, Interfax reported. Silver medallists were given the keys to Mercedes ML-Class, worth $99,500, and bronze medalists will take home a Mercedes GLK-Class, worth $59,500. Some athletes may get more use out of the vehicles than others. Yulia Lipnitskaya gained acclaim for her contribution to the Russian team figure skating gold medal, but is 15 years old and too young to legally drive her prize. When asked by Medvedev who would drive the car, Lipnitskaya replied that her mother would, RIA Novosti reported. Forty-five new cars were presented in total. Russian won 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals at Sochi. The cars are provided for by the Russian Olympians Foundation, a not-for-profit organization set up by a group of businessmen in 2005. In 2012, athletes who medaled in the London Olympic Games were each given a brand new Audi, which came complete with a personal driver. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/sochi-2014/article/russian-olympic-medalists-receive-mercedes-suvs/495364.html

If anything, it again exposed another loophole in the whole Olympic process. That means the NOCs have to vet more stringently. It would appear, in this case, that the NOC was complicit rather than fooled. Given that this is an island nation reportedly associated with "selling citizenship," incidents like this should not be particularly surprising. There's probably no perfect solution to this problem. It would have been nice if the media had initially been a little more inquisitive rather than accepting unquestioningly the story as told by the grifters themselves. It's satisfying, though, that they've been outed, as it appears that they were in this as much for the attention as the experience.

Rob2012
Oh my god- read further to discover team GB did similar!? I can understand funding or other support but a material object like a luxury car is gross. I'm 99% certain that that is wrong. I don't remember it happening, I can't find any mention of it on Google (you'd think someone in the British press would pick up on it if we were handing out Audis!), and Team GB famously doesn't award medallists with anything. I did find that a Chinese medallist got an Audi. Maybe that's where the Moscow Times is getting confused. EDIT: A bit more Googling reveals that sponsor BMW did give cars to Team GB Olympic athletes but this was as part of a scheme, and not a reward for medallists.... Apparently Anna Watkins complained on Newsnight last night that male athletes were being given sponsored BMWs while women weren't. Owen Gibson looked into that claim and extracted the following response from a BMW spokesperson. "We have a long-standing sponsorship programme, the BMW London 2012 Performance Team, which supports over 150 athletes across a wide variety of sports, almost 70 of whom are women. These include medal winners Laura Trott, Nicola Adams and Rebecca Adlington as well as many other members of Team GB and Olympic hopefuls who did not make the team. The majority of these were local athletes, selected by dealerships in their area, and they were provided with a BMW or a MINI to help them through their training as they prepared for the Games. The provision of cars to individuals is in no way related to their performance at the Games." http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2012/aug/11/london-2012-olympics-day-15?newsfeed=true#block-5026108cb5794d1ce7459e47

intoronto
REPORT: LATVIA FACES OLYMPIC DQ AFTER SECOND FAILED TEST One of the best underdog stories of the Sochi Olympics may be nearly undone. According to The Globe and Mail's James Mirtle, the Latvian men's Olympic team - which finished eighth in the hockey tournament - now faces possible disqualification after a second player has allegedly tested positive for a banned substance. Mirtle cites a report from Latvian web site sportacentrs.com that states an unnamed player has turned up the team's second positive drug test of the tournament. Forward Vitalijs Pavlovs failed a drug test following Latvia's 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Canada. Under Olympic rules, hockey teams do not face disqualification until multiple players test positive for banned substances. The eighth-place finish improved Latvia to 10th in the IIHF world rankings, which is a key determinant to Olympic qualification. The top nine teams in the IIHF world rankings received automatic berths to the Sochi Games, which was the reason why Norway (ranked ninth through 2012) was able to avoid the qualification tournaments that saw Slovenia, Austria and Latvia qualify by beating the likes of Germany, France and Belarus. IIHF rankings are based on tournament performance over a four-year span, including both the Olympic hockey tournament and the World Championships.
