Events at 2014 Sochi Games to start day earlier

LONDON (AP) -- Competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, will begin a day before the opening ceremony - a first for a winter games.

Qualifying events in figure skating, freestyle skiing and snowboarding will take place on Feb. 6, 2014, to give organizers "breathing space," IOC sports director Christophe Dubi told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The opening ceremony is Feb. 7 and the games will run to Feb. 23, meaning the games will cover 18 days rather than the standard 17.

The Sochi Games will feature 98 medal events, 12 more than the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Dubi said the early qualifying will be held in the men's and pairs short program in figure skating, women's moguls in freestyle and men's snowboard slopestyle.

The move builds contingency into the packed sports schedule and makes it possible for more athletes to attend the opening ceremony the next day, when no competitions will be held, Dubi said. The first medal events will be held Feb. 8.

Competitions have been scheduled on the day of the opening ceremony at previous Winter Olympics, but this will be the first time events will be held a day before, Dubi said.

Events at the much bigger Summer Games usually start a few days before the opening ceremony. The women's soccer tournament kicked off at the London Olympics on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony.

Among the new events approved by the IOC last year for Sochi are women's ski jumping, men's and women's slopestyle, men's and women's ski halfpipe, mixed relay in biathlon and team events in luge and figure skating.

Interesting to say the least.

CBC to carry 2014, 2016 Olympic games

CBC/Radio-Canada has made a successful bid for broadcasting rights for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, the CBC reports.

The news may cheer Olympics fans across the country, as some had speculated no Canadian broadcaster would be able to afford the broadcast rights, forcing Canadians to tune in to NBC or another international channel for Olympic coverage.

Although CBC president Hubert Lacroix could not offer detailed costs of the deal, he said that the bid was “very financially and fiscally responsible”

The CBC was Canada’s Olympic broadcaster for over 50 years, until CTV outbid the national broadcaster for the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic games.

Although the 2010 games had very high ratings, and the mens’ hockey final was the most widely viewed hockey game in the last 30 years, CTV still lost money on the contract.

>>>> Lots of Canadians will be happy with this news.

Fraud Case Launched over Sochi 2014 Olympic Projects

The investigation of the first fraud case over the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics finance has been completed and will soon go to court, the Russian Interior Ministry said on Thursday, the Izvestia daily reported.

The ministry press center said criminal proceedings were initiated in June 2012 over an attempted embezzlement of public funds.

“One case concerns the construction of an Olympic bobsleigh run,” the press service said, adding that a group of executives from the Mostovik construction firm had attempted to pocket 2.5 billion rubles (about $80 million) by inflating construction costs.

Another case involved an attempted misappropriation of 5.6 billion rubles from the central stadium project.

Several ongoing investigations are also underway into possible fraud and cost overruns, including an ice palace for figure-skating and hockey whose budget has expanded from the original 5.6 billion rubles to 9.6 billion rubles.

Russia targets top place in Sochi Games

MOSCOW — Ice hockey and skiing-mad Russia on Wednesday set its sights on a top of the podium finish at its home Winter Olympic Games in 2014 after suffering the humiliation of an 11th place finish two years ago.

Russia's skaters and other winter sport superstars came home from Vancouver to resounding jeers after claiming just three gold medals in their worst performance ever while seeing bitter rival and host nation Canada grab 14.

The team's devastating failure sent shockwaves through the Russian sports system because it came just as the final preparations were getting underway for Games that President Vladimir Putin secured against long odds for Sochi.

The head of Russia's Olympic Committee said the task of finishing first in the Black Sea resort -- a place popular with summer tourists for its rare Russian palm trees -- was "unbelievably" difficult but still manageable.

"We have a target -- to win first place as a team," Alexander Zhukov told reporters.

By the way, does anyone know what is going on at the Wikipedia entry about Sochi 2014? Someone keeps on claiming (without concrete evidence) that the motto of those upcoming Games has changed. However, the "new motto" seems more like a satire of a James Bond movie (and a bit of a subtle threat) than an actual motto. Yet, this person continues to change it to its "present" form, not the "Gateway to the Future" motto.

You Only Live Once is not so much a Bond reference as it is a much hated phrase uttered by teenagers who want to live life to the extreme. It's often shortened to YOLO, google it. Whoever is editing it on Wikipedia is just being an internet troll.

Russian senator wants national Olympic committee to move to Sochi

Ahmed Bilalov, Vice President of the Russian Olympic Committee, wants the headquarters of the ROC and sports federations to move from Moscow to Sochi to make preparations for the Winter Olympic Games of 2014 more efficient, ITAR-TASS reports.

The official reminded that the UK and Canada had realized the initiative before. He believes that national athletes should make use of the sports facilities which will be used at the competitions, including the Roza Khutor tracks.

The senator pointed out that the US sports center is at the Olympic base of Colorado Springs.

Bilalov believes that physical education should become massive at schools, the way it is in the US, China, Germany and European states.

Not happening. USA, Germany, Canada and Norway will take the top 4 spots.

No chance in hell - they might take fourth place, if the Norwegians have a bad year - but Germany, the United States and Canada look like shoo-ins for the podium...

I think I read somewhere Canada's goal is 20 gold medals, which is ridiculous when you consider it.

You can always dream, I guess. I'd say 10+ would be a reasonable goal, though. But 20... I mean, it's not impossible, but then again, it's not impossible that Norway might win the men's Hockey tournament either.

20 might not be a stretch. 12 new events were added for Sochi, Canada won 2 of those events at the last WC for each event.

But almost everything has to go right.

I have to agree. A massive 22-year run of Olympic Winter Games successes is a major accomplishment for Canada so far. It could get interesting, if Canada can outperform the 14-gold medal run at Vancouver 2010 with another world-breaking record of gold medals to be won at Sochi 2014.

Russia has allocated $7.5 billion to build its 2014 Winter Olympic complex, about a third of the total investment in the site and surrounding region, according to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak.

The government is providing just under 92 billion rubles ($2.9 billion), while private investors are spending about 150 billion rubles, Kozak said by e-mail in response to questions. The Olympics in the Black Sea resort of Sochi and other large infrastructure project will bolster the economy, he said.

“The economic legacy of these projects will primarily remove infrastructure burdens and help economic development,” Kozak said yesterday. “As regards Sochi specifically, we’re talking about boosting transport, engineering and energy infrastructure by several times.”

President Vladimir Putin has sought to attract large international events, which also include the soccer World Cup and this week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Russia has spent about 660 billion rubles on preparations for the APEC forum in Vladivostok and will invest 300 billion rubles in the World Cup in 2018.

The government has plans to ensure the Sochi infrastructure will continue to be used after the Games, with the stadium built for the Olympic opening ceremony earmarked for training Russian soccer teams and hosting World Cup matches, Kozak said.

Private investment in the Sochi region through 2025 may be maintained at about the same level after the Games as for the Olympics, according to the deputy premier.

Sochi unveils the Games’ official slogan: “Hot.Cool.Yours.”

The committee said the slogan is a “universal solution” that “reflects Russia’s national character, the brand values of Sochi 2014 and also the progressive and innovative approach to organizing and hosting the Games,” in a statement.

Committee head Dmitry Chernyshenko said the slogan encourages inclusiveness and participation.

“The Sochi 2014 slogan says it’s impossible not to take part, impossible not to watch, impossible not to get excited and it’s worth being proud because these are our Games.”

"Hot" and "cool" are also references to subtropical Sochi's sun-and-snow climate.
