JMarkSnow2012 Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 Oddly enough, it was Romney trying his best to turn the UK into a red state by showing off his "Olympic credentials." What a funny twist of history. Speaking of Romney, it appears he's adapted his 2012 pronouncements for 2014: http://www.theguardian.com/world/feedarticle/11134405
Ikarus360 Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 50 billion dollars for Sochi 2014, a new vanity's level. And people still wonder why so many are losing faith and avoiding hosting the Olympics.
baron-pierreIV Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 And people still wonder why so many are losing faith and avoiding hosting the Olympics. But I'm sure the venues and all directly-related Games expenses, w/o all the graft & corruption, is only about $12 billion. The roads, the trains, the transit system are all there for the Sochi area's future development. Planners and numbers-crunchers should know this.

Tony E Loves Architecture Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Who are you expecting to answer this? Well, anyone with information about the Progress on the Sochi Infrastructure Projects. Is'nt that what this forum is about. Member's asking for information and anyone with the information shares so we can all learn from each other?
gotosy Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Ski federation tweaks Olympic qualifying rules BORMIO, Italy (AP) — The International Ski Federation tweaked its Olympic qualification rules Tuesday to allow racers like Ted Ligety and some high-profile Austrians to compete in the super-combined at next month's Sochi Games. FIS secretary general Sarah Lewis told The Associated Press that instead of requiring at least three super-combi finishes over the qualification period of this season and last, it will allow downhill races to count. "Due to the lack of super-combined races in the qualifying period it will be super-combined and/or downhill," Lewis said, adding that teams were being informed of the decision Tuesday. Ligety has three downhills and one super-combi — his gold-medal performance at last season's world championships — in the qualifying period. Austrian skiers Anna Fenninger and Kathrin Zettel have also qualified under the new parameters. However, Benjamin Raich has only two finishes in those events and needs one more before the Jan. 19 deadline. Injured skiers will be dealt with separately. Defending Olympic super-combi champion Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn have each been injured and also don't have enough finishes in super-combi, plus giant slalom and slalom — with five finishes required for the technical events. "They'll have to follow up their cases with our specialists for eligibility," Lewis said. AP http://bigstory.ap.org/article/ski-federation-tweaks-olympic-qualifying-rules
gotosy Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Devastated Vonn out of Sochi Games with injury (Reuters) - Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn, one of the biggest attractions in winter sport, will miss next month's Sochi Games because she requires surgery on her injured knee. The 29-year-old American broke the news on her Facebook page on Tuesday. "I am devastated to announce I will not be able to compete in Sochi," said Vonn, the girlfriend of world number one golfer Tiger Woods. "I did everything I possibly could to somehow get strong enough to overcome having no ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level." ... Reuters It's sad for her on the one hand, but on the other hand health should really come first there. She's been struggling since her initial injury last year, and I doubt she'd have been able to give her best in Sochi. Why finish 21st and risking serious injury for it? It might all have ended with a Liu Xiang 2008 scenario, though not on home soil.
Gangwon Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Makes sense. She's still human like the rest of us.
Mr Tickle Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 The games time website is up and running
paul Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 i think vonn returned too aggressively since her graft last year., her team(she) miscalculated her return regimen and now she wasted the hamstring harvested for the failed acl reconstruction. back to vail for a new recon. will be interesting to see what graft they use next and how she returns to wc racing. she's close to more career milestones. i hope she can do it

Mr Tickle Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 January 17 - Gay people should "leave children in peace", Russian President Vladimir Putin has said during a meeting today with Sochi 2014 volunteers.Putin, who has been repeatedly criticised for legislation which bans "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors, made the comments at the Olympic Park just 21 days before the Opening Ceremony of the winter Games. He told them gay people can "feel calm, at ease, but leave children in peace, please," Russian agencies reported. He added: "We do not have a ban on non-traditional sexual relationships."We have a ban on the propaganda of homosexuality and paedophilia. http://www.insidethegames.biz/olympics/winter-olympics/2014/1017902-putin-tells-sochi-2014-volunteers-gay-people-should-leave-children-in-peace Jesus christ, it makes you weep doesn't it
Rob2012 Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 Wtf is he telling Sochi volunteers this for??????? **** off Sochi. Bring on Rio!
paul Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 who cares what these politicians say.......its game time in a new spectacular place among a strong beautiful culture ....why diminish that?
Mr Tickle Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 The President of a nation hosting the games and he's talking to the volunteers, the people that welcome the world and set the tone of the games and basically calling gay people paedophiles. Thats his speech to them. Seriously you are saying thats fine because theres lots of shiny new buildings. Now that makes me want to weep, jesus.
ofan Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 I think what Paul's saying is that this is a matter for another day. Let's focus on the Olympics at the moment, because after all it's all about the sport, and I for one cannot wait for Sochi. After February we can fret about Russia and how f'd up their country is.
