I'm actually slightly surprised at Bach's statement...

"This is a despicable attack on innocent people and Olympic movement"

The IOC are taking this as an attack on the Olympcs, not trying to distance themselves from it and simply regarding it as domestic terrorism as I thought they might.

I don't think the Olympics themselves, in the city of Sochi/in the security perimeter will be at risk, it's everybody trying to get there that will be. The fact is, Russian airport and transport security is horrible to say the least, so it wouldn't surprise me to see attacks on transportation to/from Sochi during the olympics. On the other hand, you have to get that Spectator Pass deal to get into venues and get a visa to get into Sochi, so Sochi itself should be relatively secure. Once you get there, I don't think it'll be a problem, but I'd be worried about getting there. Especially if you are taking Russian Domestic Transport, rather than flying or coming in from International Destinations.

Not really. Theres a ton of security and security measures in Sochi. And these terrorists are smart enough that if they did something at the Olympics the West could no longer turn a blind eye to Islamic radicals in the region.

Russia has a clear foreign policy against terrorism. Sadly our government funds terrorism.

It's amazing reading through comments all around the web how the Tea Party seems to have adopted Putin as their new pin-up boy, and Russia as their great model for society.

Would Rogge have made the same statement? Perhaps this is a look at how the new President operates?

Then he's operating in a strange way by admitting that the bombers have already reached their goal: attacking the Olympics. A statement like this could even fuel the terrorists' zeal.

The Tea Party does have something very much in common with Russia:

- They hate non-whites.

Well, not all Russians.

I sometimes think security threats are exaggerated prior to the Games, but the security situation in Sochi, and Russia in general, is really scary. I'm sorry to say that I don't have much confidence in the Russian government to keep the Games secure (especially the mountain zones), and I feel sorry for the athletes who will essentially be competing in a prison camp due to massive security.

Between the corruption, cost overruns, repressive Russian laws, and security threats, Sochi is certainly looking like one of the worst decisions the IOC has ever made. At this point, I just hope everyone makes it to and from the Games safely.

When both factions of the establishment hate something you know they are doing something right. The leftist establishment hates Russia because they are pro Christian and standing up to the progressive agenda. The right establishment hates Russia because they crave war and need boogeymen to help justify lining the defense industries pockets. Many of these guys literally talk as if we are in a 1980's Hollywood movie.

Look at the Syria thing. All of the establishment, including all the liberal heroes like Obama, etc lied through their teeth to try to get us into a war on the side of Al Qaeda and other Islamic radicals. All mostly because it is what Saudi Arabia wanted.

Is it any coincidence that a Saudi made threats about terror attacks for Russia standing up to their plans.

I can't think of anything positive to say about the Washington establishment. Our foreign policy is illogical and treasonous. Domestically we are being turned into a godless Socialist police state.

RE: Syria. The West were too slow, not united, and unsure of what the best actions to take were. By the time they got round to addressing it Islamist factions had joined the war. They were right to oppose Assad in the first instance though. I don't think Putin deserves any congratulations for siding with Assad and coming up with a "compromise" which allows this terrible civil war to continue and his ally to whom he sells weapsons to stay in power. Nobody comes out of this with much credit in truth. This situation merely showed up very starkly the limits of our abilities.

The cornerstone of socialism is the workers owning the means of production. It is not a synonym for state ownership, and even if it were a country like America with a healthcare system like it has, with the largest domestic stock market on earth, with such a well known entrepreneurial, individualistic outlook is hardly socialist. The US is about as far away from socialism as it's possible to get. In your country 1% of the population owns well over a third of the wealth and this gap is widening every single year even with Democrats in office. It amazes me how many apparently intelligent Americans become mumbling vegetables whenever the word "socialism" is brought up with little critical analysis of what it means (just get it away from us, even though it's not actually here!!).

As for Godless- your constitution is based on the separation of Church and state. You are a Godless state by design. The Founding Fathers deliberately chose not to invoke God, sensibly realising politics and religion generally aren't a good mix. You want that changed do you?

Shame you're not in the IOC Tony ;)

Thanks Rob. But look, PyeongChang 2018, we have barely heard from the Organising Committee, no major problems so far, but look at Sochi. Corruption, Putin, Terrorists, Anti-Gay Laws, am I missing anything?

Yeah. And...how does this fix the present situation??

Well, I don't have the authority to make any fixes, my point was, I could see there would be problems then, so why couldn't the IOC?

WHAT bid/city will NOT have problems? Russia is a major winter sports power, a Winter Games would come around sooner or later. They will just deal with the problems. That's all.

Russia is having alot of Major Problems, they are the furthest from perfect. Worst than Beijing.

Worst than Beijing? How so? Because of the recent terrorist attacks at Volgograd?

Beijing had many human rights issues, well before 2008, probably even had laws against homosexual activity (though not publicly announced), yet we all just went along with it.

The main problem is of course terrorism. As long as we don't see another Munich, Sochi will be a spectacular games.

Like what Baron said, the games were bound to come to Russia sooner or later. And it did. After 2 failed bid attempts (where Sochi never made it to become a candidate/or selected by the NOC) it wowed the IOC with a revised bid plan in it's Candidate books (where in the Applicant books it was offering everything it had), it prevailed against 2 bids from consecutive bidding cities/nations which had the time to refine their bid from the previous attempt. It was the unique Olympic Park approach which gave it to Sochi in the end.

No ones perfect. No ones the worst. Russia's got problems, but hey, so did London, Vancouver, Beijing, Torino, Athens, SLC, Sydney, I could go on.

At the same time, all these cities hosted great games,, and I have no doubt sochi will as well.

To cram a complex situation into the box labeled problem and call it a day, is more of a problem. We have to look at it for what it's worth and make reserved judgements with no fearmongering or worship.

Every games is different in different ways. You can always find evidence to support it being good or bad, but hey, let's look at the facts.

Also, sorry tony. You followed the bid process in grade 5? I know I never did, heck, the only bid announcement I remember is London's cus my parents told me... And Tokyo. If you did follow the bidding, good for you. :D You're much more eager than me.

Here in London, England we don't have grade 5 and all that. We have Primary and Secondary School. In 2007, I was 10 so I was in Primary School Year 5, and since I was 4, I have been following Bid Processes. Earliest one for me was 2002 Winter Olympics.
