Gangwon Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 After the Youth Olympics the next logical step for the Olympics is the Beach Olympics -.- I could totally see the Beach Olympics happening... if only for the very reason that 115 pampered souls get themselves another all-expenses paid 2 week vacation to Miami Beach, Acapulco, Copacabana, the Gold Coast, Phuket, Malaga, Goa and the Zanzibar over their lifetimes.
krow Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 I think the next logical step for Olympics is not create new games... Youth version is already too much... i see you completely glossed over the chapter on sarcasm in english class. that and the entire section on the use of articles.

Kenadian Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 To the original question, I don't see how any winter sport event in a country like Brazil or Mexico can become as big as hockey is to Canada or skiing is to Norway. Snowy, icy winters are part of the national reality in Canada and Norway and thus those sports are ingrained into the national psyche. And the snow and ice in Canada or Norway isn't tucked away in some mountain or remote corner of the country - they are pretty much anywhere and everywhere for a good chunk of the year - and they don't compete with the beach as an alternate activity to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon. If winter isn't part of your national DNA, you probably aren't going to produce a lot of passionate supporters and followers of winter sports. Yeah, you might get a handful of athletes here or there that excel, maybe even win a medal, or plain out pull a Bradbury at the Olympics, but a few flags and cheers every four years doesn't mean it will ever become part of the nation's being. And while you're sitting on the beach drinking a pina colada from a coconut, just remember that those exclusive elites in the North are shoveling through 3 feet of snow in -30 degree weather.
intoronto Posted November 9, 2011 Report Posted November 9, 2011 Panama trying to qualify for Youth Olympics. http://www.parkrecord.com/summit_county-sports/ci_19291603

They are already a world power in short track. They have also won medals in long track. However, China isn't fully tropical there is a frozen north.

Strong and true words, man!!! Couldn't agree more! And while you're sitting on the beach drinking a pina colada from a coconut, just remember that those exclusive elites in the North are shoveling through 3 feet of snow in -30 degree weather. Today we got 32C... And it's spring yet... No pina colada and beach since I had to work... But friday starts my vacation month and I'll drink a "FROZEN TORONTONIAN" (a new drink I'm developing) paying a tribute to our friend Intoronto and his optimism about Winter Sports in Brazil. I'll put even a Canadian flag in the glass together with a small coloured umbrella!!!

intoronto Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 Today Morocco won gold medal in alpine skiing at the Youth Olympics. An athlete from the Philippines is currently in third place in figure skating.
Texas Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 I think Brazil could get some halfpipe snowboarders into the Olympics with proper training. Try converting some skateboarders into Snowboarders and see how they do. They could get training in Europe or the United States.
MrCatra Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 As Brazil grows its dominance in South America I believe we should invade argentina all the way to the south. Patagonia should be brazil's Alaska. Uruguai should be a brazilian state already. Dunno why we let them go. Then we can practice winter sports there. what you guyzes think?

Today Morocco won gold medal in alpine skiing at the Youth Olympics. An athlete from the Philippines is currently in third place in figure skating. Great for the athlete itself. I don't think people in Morocco is caring much about this victory, indeed, because you told me it's a Canadian guy competing under the Morocco flag. At the end, it's simply not natural to a citizen of Morocco win medals in Winter competition and these bizarre events (people from tropical countries winning in Winter sports) will happen from times to times, but this really does not means a growth in winter sports in Morocco or in Philippines. Probably the news of their victories are placed with big highlight in their countries websites and newspapers - normal. I mean - without big highlight in their websites and newspapers. Like the coverage of Winter Olympics in Brazil... No one cared about the games themselves, despite a huge effort of TV Record (official broadcaster) on broadcast live events on Open TV
Texas Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 A Canadian competing for Morocco in a winter Sport is no different then Kenyans and Ethiopians competing for Gulf States in Track and Field.
DannyelBrazil Posted January 16, 2012 Author Report Posted January 16, 2012 Or Chineses playing table tennis for Argentina... In fact, as Brazilian, I really hate this. Here in Brazil, only Brazilians and long-time foreigners living in Brazil can play under Brazilian flag. Brazilian people does not accept to "import" athletes to represent us.

What about those of Brazilian descent born in other countries? That's different that in the United States. We don't care as long as you perform. The United States Track and Field team has had a few naturalized athletes (born in other countries) such as Bernard Lagat, Debbie Dunn, Sanya Richards-Ross, Meb Kheflezghi, Lopez Lomong and Kerron Clement, although Dunn, Richards-Ross and Clement have never represented their birth countries (Dunn and Richards-Ross from Jamaica and Clement from Trinidad and Tobago).

I read a news article that Morocco wouldn't sleep for two days cuz of the victory. That's sad winter Olympic sports are much more entertaining and better to watch then Synchronized swimming, field hockey, archery etc.
Sir Rols Posted January 16, 2012 Report Posted January 16, 2012 That's sad winter Olympic sports are much more entertaining and better to watch then Synchronized swimming, field hockey, archery etc. You can give me BMX over curling any day.
intoronto Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 You can give me BMX over curling any day. Off course with a couple of exceptions. Short track speed skating in my opinion is the most exciting sport in either Olympic program.
DannyelBrazil Posted January 17, 2012 Author Report Posted January 17, 2012 What about those of Brazilian descent born in other countries? What matter for us is growing up and been here for long. For Brazilians, a Brazilian is the one who born here or lives in Brazil for a certain time (specially growing up here), speaks Portuguese and love the country. i read a news article that Morocco wouldn't sleep for two days cuz of the victory. Metaphoric language, I presume... Or did you saw pics of the Morocco people celebrating the victory by making snowmans in their backyards? C'mon, Intoronto!
MrCatra Posted January 19, 2012 Report Posted January 19, 2012 A real idiotic and stupid comment from a troll. your hate makes me sad anyway, back to the thread, except curling, winter sports are kinda boring... I really love curling, it's like chess on ice + nonstop action + fierce competition. I just love it.
