intoronto Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Interesting. I agree there will be large swaths of empty seats in Qatar. I can't see that happening in London (especially considering London's population is about 5X Qatar's entire population) .
Rob2012 Posted November 11, 2011 Author Report Posted November 11, 2011 Not broadcast, cameras not allowed in. But full and very sarcastic commentary from the Telegraph here on what's happening: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/athletics/8883611/World-Athletics-Championships-2017-vote-live.html
deawebo Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 In almost all asian countries that happens... See the Daegu World Championships... It was almost half of the stadium's seatimg capacity
baron-pierreIV Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 It's Loudon!! I hope they don't bail out now as they did for 2005. Poor Doha, but they will be back for 2019 I'm sure. This vote just shows off what a bunch of dupes FIFA is/was. Now the onus is on the IOC.
baron-pierreIV Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 16-10...good margin. Doha to buy 2020 IOC votes at $500 million each!! Ha!!
Rob2012 Posted November 11, 2011 Author Report Posted November 11, 2011 Ha, London did it! Wasn't sure it would come off after Doha started flashing the cash, but it's in the bag. So the rush is on the redesign the stadium to make it into a permanant 60k, rather than a permanant 25k, stadium now I guess.
olympian Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Doha tried to win by flashing the money. Good things IAAF isn't willing to suffer the same fate as FIFA.
Sir Rols Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Congratulations London. Nice news to wake up to. Now, if only the GC can get up ......
Citius Altius Fortius Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 my sport travel plans: London 2012 England 2015 London 2017
intoronto Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 my sport travel plans: London 2012 England 2015 London 2017 and hopefully a Munich 2022 games.
Citius Altius Fortius Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 and hopefully a Munich 2022 games. that would be great!
Ikarus360 Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Congratulations London this will be very positive for the whole legacy of the 2012 Olympics. I knew Doha was going to lose, specially after the low assistance in Daegu 2011 and all the drama with the 2022 WC decision
Olympian2004 Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Damn, I really forgot that the decision was today. I was mainly focussed on the first round of the EURO 2012 play-offs. But now: Congratulations, London! It would have been sheer madness if you had lost. And it's wonderful to know that this great and unique Olympic Stadium will now have a future in (almost) its present size and with the athletics track.
Brekkie Boy Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 And I'd guess the next step for London will be a Commonwealth Games - they could go for 2022 or 2026, but I suspect they'd like the centenial games in 2030.
deawebo Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 Today was the "safe choice" day.... Gold Coast and London!!! Nice to see London 2012 leagacy working!! Contratulations... But i wanted Doha to win :S still London is a great city and deserves it more. And I'd guess the next step for London will be a Commonwealth Games - they could go for 2022 or 2026, but I suspect they'd like the centenial games in 2030. London will be a great host of the CG!!
Alexjc Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 The Commonwealth Double! Both Mother and Daughter win today, congrats to London and Gold Coast. And great to see London maintaining a head lead in global sports.
deawebo Posted November 11, 2011 Report Posted November 11, 2011 It's Loudon!! I hope they don't bail out now as they did for 2005. Poor Doha, but they will be back for 2019 I'm sure. Probably. The only spanner in the works is if another UK city bids before then, which I can see happening.
Rob2012 Posted November 12, 2011 Author Report Posted November 12, 2011 I don't know what London would do in terms of an athletes village for another big multi-sport event like the Commonwealths. The Olympic Village will be long sold off as housing by 2030. Whatever happens, it won't be as compact as the 2012 Games for most athletes. And the media centre and press centre will also be in use by then too, so a different solution will need to be worked out for that. Not to mention, the aquatics centre would need its temporary stands (or one temporary stand) put back on again!
Brekkie Boy Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 Housing is always being built - so some sort of development to be converted to housing afterwards won't be an issue - though might be further away than the Olympic village. Media and press requirements are significantly smaller for the Commonwealth Games, while I'm sure the Aquatics Centre will be big enough - bigger than Manchester 2002 I think, and I'm sure they've said the reduced size would fit with FINA guidelines for World Champs etc.
baron-pierreIV Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 1. I don't know what London would do in terms of an athletes village for another big multi-sport event like the Commonwealths. Not to mention, the aquatics centre would need its temporary stands (or one temporary stand) put back on again! 1. It's only about 1,800 athletes for the IAAF champs-- so maybe a university dorm would do?? 2. See how impractical that design of hers is??
