Sri Lanka 205/7...at least the 200 mark has passed...Could be close but NZ must be feeling confident.

Another benefit this early in the tournament is getting your average run rate up as this counts towards the end of the tournament as positions for quarter finals are calculated and teams place accordingly.

:) And there it is...New Zealand wins by 98 runs in match 1 of CWC2015. Sri Lanka just couldn't hold it together after the 124 mark and slowly crumbled under a tight bowling and field display by the in form Blackcaps.

Hagley Oval looked a picture throughout and a great replacement for Lancaster Park. Also nice to see the park like grounds allowing players to interact with young fans.

Very family oriented are the matches being played in NZ hence the great turnouts without the yobbo behaviour.

Agreed.

The Blackcaps certainly did impress me.

And you're right, Hagley did look fantastic. While it did shine during the one day series earlier this summer, I was sceptical it would be up to the standard to host a world cup, but it certainly was worthy of the event.

I think it's going to be one of the great things about this world cup, being co-hosted, we are going to see a fantastic contrast of venues and atmospheres. We're going to have matches in the heart of Melbourne at a gigantic stadium like the MCG, and then we're going to shift to some of the great boutique grounds in NZ - like by the ocean in Napier.

It'll give so much variety, a good thing.

NZ Cricket finally got it right.

Apart from Eden Park and Wellington Regional Stadium...New Zealand was always going to have grounds to fit...Even Seddon Park has only been fitted out for 5000 seats with bare embankments taking up capacity to 20000. It could've taken far more.

Looking forward to seeing how Nelson's venue performs, quite nice.

NZ Fans have finally spoken and said these grounds are good enough outside 20/20 big bash matches.

The morons that run Auckland Council must be hitting themselves with not sorting out Western Springs as the main Auckland Cricket ground in time for CWC15.

Devestating start to Australia's campaign in Melbourne this evening with an enfatic victory over England by 111 runs.

England won the coin toss and sent Australia into bat first in which they shlocked up 342/9 completing a full innings.

England simply couldn't withstand the tight Aussie bowling attack and at one stage were heading for a massive defeat but stablized to a more respectable all out for 231 in the 45th over.

Australia cementing as favourites to take out the World Cup...But it's early days yet.

So it's one each for the host Nations :)

Two "Next Door Neighbour" matches today...

Match 3, South Africa v Zimbabwe, Hamilton.

Match 4, India v Pakistan, Adelaide.

South Africa built up a sizable 339 first innings total with Zimbabwe slowly eating the case total down 56/1.

India batting first against old foe Pakistan so far 181/2 in the 34th over.

Wrapped up in Hamilton.

Zimbabwe unable to overhaul South Africa's 339/4, falling short at 277 all out in the 48th over.

In Adelaide...

Pakistan chasing down India's 300/7.

At the moment it's all about keeping a high run rate average per over even if you are going to lose. May be the difference towards the end of pool play when quarter/semi positions approach.

:D A cliffhanger is on the cards if Ireland can run down West Indies 304/7 posted at Saxon Oval in beautiful Nelson today.

At the moment Ireland are 213/2 in the 33 Over with and RR of 6.6 an over...A couple or three boundries or over the fences would give Ireland some breathing space.

This match is going to have a great ending :)

:D:lol::D First upset of the CWC...and a big one for Ireland who finally stumbled home to post the first second innings chase down victory 307/6. A great effort against a side that use to intimidate.

West Indies 304/7 - Ireland 307/6. :)

It really is time for Ireland to have Test status - possibly removing Bangladesh or Zimbabwe at the same time. They certainly shouldn't be made to qualify for 2019 when it's clear they're better than some of the full members.

Test status is moreover a combination of both codes and consistency. I will agree that Zimbabwe looks dubious but since the IOC is loaded with Sub Continental officials, they'll stay. Bangladesh is the rising star at the moment and has knocked over fellow first tier nations frequently. Yes Ireland has knocked over a major in every WC since 2007, but needs to do it again. You don't have to drop a nation to move into First Class Test status...You are invited to take the position but there are certain criteria to follow and a longish probation time. You also need lots of $$$ to pay official player salaries, and as Ireland gets better, they go up. Zimbabwe and Bangladesh can do this because they have strong financial backing. I'd be more worried about the UAE catching up to and passing Ireland.

Also I'm old enough to remember SriLanka in the position Ireland is in now...

:) Lunch time at University Oval

Scotland batting first, cleaned oot in the 36th Over, making only 142.

New Zealand went straight in to bat after a drinks break and are well on their way to wrapping it up early....

BUT not before some silly errors saw both openers, Guptall and McCullum, out before what would be the break for a full 50 over innings which became lunch.

NZ 63/2...

:wacko::) NZ is making an absolute meal of an easy run chase now at a surprising 117/5 chasing another 26 to win  .

Question: Cricket doesn't look to be a very physically demanding sport, so why does the World Cup take like a third of the year to play.

Takes 6 weeks?

 Wickets keep falling as NZ plays lazy and not impressing anyone eventually getting there in the 25th over 146/7

Could be more tactical as players saving themselves for England...Still.

Scotland probably feeling better for it after what could've been a disaster earlier on.

 NZ definitely better be awake on Friday. And it doesn't help Wickets/Run ratio for QF positions.

Very proud of our team today, a loss yeah but with a few runs, on the current form of hosts New Zealand. Well done boys, for a country of 5 million where cricket is barely known. Be proud sons of Alba.

Yeah whatever...Still reckon there are too many minnows in the WC. Would've been better with just 10. Like 1992 where they all bashed the sh!t out of each other within three weeks, then semis and final. All over within 5 weeks.

And that's what it's gonna be in 2019!

Unless the ICC backtracks, of course, as it did for this tournament. All of the lesser sides we have seen so far have performed well, so I think there'll be another fight to stop the ICC pulling up the drawbridge. If they do, then the problem that Michael Holding alluded to when discussing Ireland's potential Test status will spread.
