Another benefit this early in the tournament is getting your average run rate up as this counts towards the end of the tournament as positions for quarter finals are calculated and teams place accordingly. Sri Lanka just couldn't hold it together after the 124 mark and slowly crumbled under a tight bowling and field display by the in form Blackcaps. Hagley Oval looked a picture throughout and a great replacement for Lancaster Park. Also nice to see the park like grounds allowing players to interact with young fans. And you're right, Hagley did look fantastic. While it did shine during the one day series earlier this summer, I was sceptical it would be up to the standard to host a world cup, but it certainly was worthy of the event. I think it's going to be one of the great things about this world cup, being co-hosted, we are going to see a fantastic contrast of venues and atmospheres. We're going to have matches in the heart of Melbourne at a gigantic stadium like the MCG, and then we're going to shift to some of the great boutique grounds in NZ - like by the ocean in Napier. Apart from Eden Park and Wellington Regional Stadium...New Zealand was always going to have grounds to fit...Even Seddon Park has only been fitted out for 5000 seats with bare embankments taking up capacity to 20000. It could've taken far more. Looking forward to seeing how Nelson's venue performs, quite nice. NZ Fans have finally spoken and said these grounds are good enough outside 20/20 big bash matches. The morons that run Auckland Council must be hitting themselves with not sorting out Western Springs as the main Auckland Cricket ground in time for CWC15. England won the coin toss and sent Australia into bat first in which they shlocked up 342/9 completing a full innings. England simply couldn't withstand the tight Aussie bowling attack and at one stage were heading for a massive defeat but stablized to a more respectable all out for 231 in the 45th over. South Africa built up a sizable 339 first innings total with Zimbabwe slowly eating the case total down 56/1. India batting first against old foe Pakistan so far 181/2 in the 34th over. In Adelaide... Pakistan chasing down India's 300/7. At the moment it's all about keeping a high run rate average per over even if you are going to lose. At the moment Ireland are 213/2 in the 33 Over with and RR of 6.6 an over...A couple or three boundries or over the fences would give Ireland some breathing space. I will agree that Zimbabwe looks dubious but since the IOC is loaded with Sub Continental officials, they'll stay. Bangladesh is the rising star at the moment and has knocked over fellow first tier nations frequently. Yes Ireland has knocked over a major in every WC since 2007, but needs to do it again. You don't have to drop a nation to move into First Class Test status...You are invited to take the position but there are certain criteria to follow and a longish probation time. You also need lots of $$$ to pay official player salaries, and as Ireland gets better, they go up. Zimbabwe and Bangladesh can do this because they have strong financial backing. I'd be more worried about the UAE catching up to and passing Ireland. Also I'm old enough to remember SriLanka in the position Ireland is in now... New Zealand went straight in to bat after a drinks break and are well on their way to wrapping it up early.... BUT not before some silly errors saw both openers, Guptall and McCullum, out before what would be the break for a full 50 over innings which became lunch. NZ 63/2... Scotland probably feeling better for it after what could've been a disaster earlier on. NZ definitely better be awake on Friday. And it doesn't help Wickets/Run ratio for QF positions. All of the lesser sides we have seen so far have performed well, so I think there'll be another fight to stop the ICC pulling up the drawbridge.
