gotosy
IRB ushers in new era with name change to World Rugby (Reuters) - The International Rugby Board (IRB) will undergo a second name change in 16 years when it becomes formally known as World Rugby in November as part of a rebranding programme, the sport's governing body said on Thursday. The new brand, including a revised logo, will be launched at the IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition in London on Nov. 17-18, with the new name taking effect from Nov. 19. The governing body was initially founded in 1886 as the International Rugby Football Board by the Ireland, Scotland and Wales rugby unions before England joined in 1890. It changed its name to the IRB in 1998. Growth in player numbers and expansion into new markets as well as the sport's reintroduction to the Olympic Games in 2016 had prompted the decision to rebrand itself, it said. "We are committed to furthering that growth beyond our traditional family and fan base with a public that expects to be entertained, informed and interacted with," IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said in a statement. "This move is more than just a name change, it is a mission statement." The branding for the sport's global showpiece, the rugby World Cup will remain in place until after next year's event in England. Reuters
gotosy
Rugby World Cup 2015: Russia beat Uruguay in play-off first-leg Russia beat Uruguay in the first leg of their play-off for the final place at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. Russia, coached by Raphael Saint-Andre - brother of France boss Philippe - had home advantage and won 22-21 in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. The second leg takes place in Montevideo in Uruguay on October 11. The play-off winner will take the 20th spot at next year's World Cup and will be in Pool A with Australia, England, Wales and Fiji. A try from prop Grigory Tsobiladze and a flawless kicking display from fly-half Yuri Kushnarev was enough to get Russia over the line in a keenly-fought first leg. But Uruguay's powerful pack and seven penalties from the boot of Felipe Berchesi ensured it was close throughout and keeps the South Americans well in contention for the return match. Uruguay have played at two previous World Cups in 1999 and 2003, while Russia made their debut in 2011. BBC

Alexjc
Well, if that means we don't see Putin's face on TV for the ridiculous amount of time we saw it during the Russian Grand Prix, good! It's alright...Australian PM, Tony Abbott is going to verbally "Shirt Front" him next month when he hosts the G20 Summit...a Shirt Front is slang for a full on frontal AFL shoulder front crash tackle...bloody impressive. Alexjc
Only because there was nowhere else to post it...BUT Australia has put the rest of the Rugby world on notice after they took out the Rugby Championship after the Wallabies downed the All Blacks 27 - 19 in Sydney this evening. This year's RC edition was the shorter one game each as it is World Cup year, giving Australia an unbeaten record for 2015. There is still the ballancing return Bledesloe Cup match next Saturday in Auckland, though not a Rugby Championship match. Australia needs to win to regain the Bledesloe Cup and break the Eden Park curse in which they havent won against New Zealand there since 1986. (they have drawn). Very ominous when Australia can climb all over New Zealand with such intensity as they played tonight.

Alexjc
Looking good! Hard to believe it's been four years since NZ hosted the event. Feel confident that the All Blacks stand a genuine chance of making it to the final but Australia does look ominous. Semi Finals are always the great foot trips for us. Rob would be better suited for this...host Nation citizen and all. Could get Tony to participate...He DOES enjoy comps on GB and this would give him something positive to contribute. Alexjc
Yet another ominous sign that the All Blacks won't be able to defend their current title as world champions. The rugby famous Glenmark Rugby Club hall near Christchurch, was destroyed by fire last night. Inside were priceless memorabilia including items from past All Blacks that played for the club...including former coach and AB player Alec "grizzly" Wylie and previous Australian coach and AB player Robbie Deans. Seven All Blacks have come from the tiny club since 1960. TAB betting shows a considerable of betting against the All Blacks including a huge $100k for them to be knocked out in the semis Whoever gets NZ in the GB Sweepstakes - don't count on, or bet on them being there at the end. Alexjc
Welsh Rugby is to trial the "6 point" Try this comming norther season for their second tier playing teams. The idea is to knock out time wasting. Considering that ref calls, especially at the breakdown and annoying scrum sets that fail, is the greatest time waster of the game...pretty stupid idea! IMO of course
Alexjc
A reality check for the advance guard of Sky/TVNZ sportscasters who arrived in London yesterday on Rugby's insignificance in the greater England scheme of things. Football rules! Wayne Rooney reaching his milestone. And so does the Queen! The milestone of her long reign celebrated this week. Noted was the lack of any form of advertising of RWC15 at Heathrow or in greater London. A quick visit out to Twickers showed the main entrance still being remodelled for next week's opening match and large stickers still being placed over non tournament advertising signage. The local reporters did mention that the "uptake" by the public was very low and nothing like the long build up four years ago in New Zealand. Ex pat Kiwis (and Aussies) are usually the noisiest supporters but they too have noticed a lack of enthusisim except when mention of the Semi-Finals seems to get any response. The first team to arrive is Fiji today and the New Zealand team is already en-route. Lets hope there is a build up of sorts with a week to go. arwebb
What has disappointed me most about this tournament is the venue selection and the ticket pricing. I can't and won't criticise any individual venue. I have visited most of them and all the ones I have visited are excellent. The AMEX Stadium in Brighton is, in my view, one of the very best in the country in terms of the overall quality of the spectator experience. I just feel the allocation of fixtures is too southern-orientated with no knockout game outside London or Cardiff and few games involving the biggest teams outside those two cities either. I'm also disappointed with the ticket pricing which I feel has been too high. While some of the pool games have been priced reasonably, a lot of the games involving the major nations have started at at least £50 and in many cases £85. That is far too high for a tournament which, although getting more competitive, will still produce many one-sided encounters in its early rounds. It doesn't surprise me that, as I look at the ticket website tonight, you can still buy tickets for all but three of the pool stage matches. That ought to tell the organisers something. I did see posters promoting the tournament on the underground when I was in London three weeks ago, so I'm a touch cautious about reports like the ones you've had. At the same time, however, one should recognise this is going to be a different World Cup from the one New Zealand staged so well four years ago. We are not a rugby nation in the sense that it is not our number one sport. But it is still the biggest event to come to these shores since London 2012 and, with all England's pool games being played in primetime evening slots, I expect there to be some very big television audiences. ITV, the host broadcaster, has been heavily promoting its coverage for weeks. I suspect part of the reason why it may feel like there's a slight lull in the build-up is that we haven't got any warm-up games this weekend and everyone is looking to opening night at Twickenham a week tomorrow. But, despite the focus on Wayne Rooney breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record, and the Queen becoming our longest reigning monarch (as well as Wales and Northern Ireland being on the brink of European Championship football qualification), there has still been a lot of talk this week about the problems in the Welsh camp after Rhys Webb (no relation as far as I know) and Leigh Halfpenny were ruled out through injuries sustained in their final warm-up game against Italy at the weekend. I just hope that doesn't cast too big a shadow over what is to come.
Rob2012
Didn't Sir Alex decide he didn't want Old Trafford to be used when they were deciding the venues, so Man Utd pulled away from hosting? I think if that hadn't happened there might be a better spread.
yoshi
You should come down to Brighton Alex - the banners have been up along the main roads for some time. But then, the games at Amex are both on the first weekend I wish it'd be more like the FIFA World Cup in allocating venues, Twickers gets what, 11 games? While Brighton & Manchester only get 3 between them. Host cities should have games shared more equally among them, make them a proper part of it. Oh & I don't have a problem with the geographical spread (apart from London's excessive hoarding of matches). Unlike NZ, union isn't a national game - it's very much south-central England & Wales. The North should have venues but you need to remember that northerners think union is a namby-pamby schoolyard game played by big girl's blouses

No arguments there. Unlike 1991 which England shared with the others of the then "five nations" unions...they are sole hosts with the exception of Cardiff. I suppose yes thanks to the Class divide, Rugby is still exclusive to Public School upbringing. What we have got is a more clustered event that focusses on London. Pack 'em in for less cost. Still I hope it gets going this comming week. All Blacks arrive today and are welcomed at Tower Of London...As if that's gonna intimidate them...
