2014 FIFA World Cup - qualification

Recommended Posts

What a story that would've been if Qatar couldn't make it among the 10 Asian finalists for the WC. The final round will consist of 10 teams divided into 2 groups of 5:

Australia

South Korea

Japan

Iran

Uzbekistan

Iraq

Jordan

Qatar

Oman

Lebanon

4 of them will have guaranteed entry to the WC.

Surprisingly, Saudi Arabia is out. (Or maybe not as surprising as once thought, given their recent play)

Asia gets too much spots. It should be maximum 4 and the extra .5 transferred to CONCACAF or CONEMBOL

What's your reasoning?

FIFA probes Bahrain's 10-0 WCup qualifier win

GENEVA — FIFA launched an investigation Thursday into the "unusual outcome" of Bahrain's 10-0 victory over a weakened Indonesia team in a World Cup qualifying match.

Bahrain's win on Wednesday has raised suspicion because it needed to make up a nine-goal deficit on Qatar in the group standings to have a chance of advancing to the next round.

Bahrain also needed Qatar to lose its last match, but the Qataris scored an 83rd-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw at Iran to reach the next stage of the Asian qualifying tournament.

FIFA said in a statement that "security will conduct a routine examination of this game and its result." The soccer governing body said it was justified "given the unusual outcome against results expectation and head-to-head history, and in the interests of maintaining unequivocal confidence in our game."

What's your reasoning?

Both Concacaf and Conembol have higher continental regional strength. Same can be said about Africa they get too much as well.

Conmebol already has half its members at the WC.

Concacaf is not stronger than Asia. Mexico, US, Korea, Japan and Australia are all relatively of equal strength. After those regional powerhouses, there are still 1.5 spots up for grabs in both NA and Asia.

I am using FIFA's ranking decisions.

UEFA is 1.00 CONMEBOL is 1.00 COncacaf is .88 ASia and Africa are .86

As a citizen from a Concacaf country and someone that watched the 2011 Club WC, Asia and African are stronger than US, see Mexico lost 2-0 with Colombia (5th in the Conmebol Qualification).... The USA sometimes SOMETIMES are better than Asian pr Agrican countries, just sometimes.

And there's your mistake. FIFA's rankings are already flawed to begin with (Uruguay 4th best in the world?), without even mentioning the weight used for their regional strength formula. Oceania is rated the same as Asia and Africa, but Oceania is 10x weaker than any other continent.

No more spots for Conmebol... 4.5 is already excellent for South Americans and fair.

For 2014 Brazil World Cup, Conmebol can have 6 teams (Brazil included)... It would be 60% of the confederation playing in the World Cup!!!

I do think the balance is just right. Maybe Africa could have one more spot or Oceania have 1.0, not 0.5...

This is what I feel is the best system:

Hosts should get 1

So 31 spots to split.

Africa had one nation in the final 16 so it should be reduced

NA had 2 out of 3 so .5 is justifiable

SA had all 5! so .5 is also justifiable

Asia had 2 out of 4 and one of its nations were blown out 7-1.

That's not a bad system, except the continental federations would have to change their internal qualification format every 4 years depending on how they performed the previous WC. For example, Africa could no longer use their present qualification format if they even lost 0.5 spots. And not to mention that CONCACAF would've lost half a spot after the 2006 WC under this system.

True.

Or Asia/Ocenia NA SA and Africa get 4 each Host 1 Europe 13 and the remaining two go to the two best continents from the previous world cup excluding Europe.

Previous World Cup should never be a parameter for a decision of spots.

Many things changes in 4 years in football.

Fair POV, so, if Oceania get 1.0, Australia should be back to OFC.

I think Oceania should merge with Asia. Give them 5 spots and done.

Only CONMEBOL and UEFA maintained the same format from previous world cups. All other confederations changed their formats even with the same number of places.

1 ) There is nothing in it for Asia to merge with Oceania. Australia is already in Asia for football purposes. The AFC wouldn't like to see potential meaningless games against the Solomon Islands. Although I'm sure the AFC would love to have that automatic 5th spot.

2 ) AFC and CONCACAF have pretty much kept their format the same for the later rounds- the rounds that matter. Not sure about CAF, I don't follow them enough to know.

Asia has a preliminary stage with Laos, Macaw, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal... Just put the Oceania teams at this stage.

I live very much the system of CONMEBOL.

It's like a permanent league of selection during 3 years... Very interesting.

FIFA: Egypt, Libya WC qualifiers will be without fans

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- World Cup qualifiers involving Egypt and Libya next month will be played without fans, FIFA said on Wednesday, while security arrangements for matches in Mali, Nigeria and Kenya were being scrutinized.

Egypt-Mozambique in Alexandria on June 1 and Libya-Cameroon in Sfax, Tunisia on June 10 will be behind closed doors, the world football body told The Associated Press in a written reply to questions. FIFA said the decision was taken by local authorities and football federations in those countries.

Mali's game against Algeria could be moved out of the West African country after the president was toppled in a coup.

...

FIFA had also asked for security plans from Kenya before its qualifying competition, but added it was "not unusual."

Kenya hosts Malawi on June 2 in Nairobi, which has seen hit-and-run grenade attacks in the last few months that were blamed on Somali militant group al-Shabab.
