2014 FIFA World Cup - qualification

Recommended Posts

Now the play-offs are interesting as there is South America's 5th against Asia's 5th and Concacaf vs. Oceania. While the latter duel could be quite even, I expect Uruguay to trounce Jordania. It's ridiculous to claim that Asia or Africa deserve more places just because of their size. Even though Japan and South Korea are decent sides, they already always qualify and behind them the quality drops dramatically.

UEFA chief Platini calls for 40 team World Cup

(Reuters) - UEFA chief Michel Platini wants the World Cup finals expanded to 40 teams from 2018 to allow more African and Asian countries into the tournament without reducing the number of European nations represented.

Europe currently provides 13 of the 32 teams at the finals, compared with five from Africa and four or five, depending on the winners of a playoff against a South American team, for the most populous continent Asia.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter wrote last week that Africa and Asia deserved more representation at soccer's showpiece event because they had more member associations than Europe and South America.

Former France international Platini, widely regarded as the most likely successor to Swiss Blatter in the FIFA job, said by his own calculations that adding eight more teams would require extending the tournament by only three days.

"It's good for everybody," Platini told Britain's Times newspaper in an interview.

"I totally agree with Mr Blatter that we need more African and Asian (teams). But instead of taking away some European, we have to go to 40 teams.

"We can add two African, two Asiatic, two American, one Oceania and one from Europe."

European and South American countries have won all 19 versions of the World Cup.

Platini is a moron. (Some would say he's not a moron, just corrupt /populist politician, but I'm not sure about that :D) He's a bigger moron than Blatter, if you think blatter is bad, it's because you don't know platini.

He already hurt the Champions League a bit, and he plans on more.

For the good of football, someone need to stop this maniac from getting more power.

The big threat is Platini breaking away from FIFA altogether to form his own body with Uefa & anyone else he can get to join him. Football could end up like darts if Platini gets his way.

world darts fed wikipedia:

One of the member organisations is the British Darts Organisation (BDO), which is the official darts body for Britain, the leading darts country. It is one of two rival British darts organisations, the other being the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), which runs its own world championship.

interesting. a bit esoteric and pointless but interesting.

Again, Blatter is a despicable man, but he has a good point here -Not all-, imo. The play offs are unfair in that sense. Just keep one place to OFC and the other to COMMENBOL or AFC.

Sorry but Oceania don't have pro football there. It'd be quite pathetic to see another tahiti in the CC, let alone the world cup. They should merge them with Asia and that's it.

I agree. After Australia left the Oceania there was no decent team there.

Hey, New Zealand isn't terrible, but it is definetely not fair that they get basically automatic qualification to every WC when there are more deserving nations that get left out.

NZ's chances are shot now. They now got a couple of players suspended with a couple of yellow cards and injuries for the second leg in Wellington. The All-Whites are limited with offensive deficiencies. Set pieces and keeping away the chances help but ultimately Mexico was going to wear them down, let alone having the World Cup pedigree Mexico has.

If you're an All-Whites fan, don't you wish the US didn't beat Panama in Panama City?

Yep, both Uruguay and Mexico pass. The interesting part of Mexico - This is a local selection, with players of national teams -Well most of them of only one team-. If the chance is right -Not respect for international players who don't deserve the place (Just qualified for the name)- I think they will keep the confidence of the people.

Jordan players request 'leave' from World Cup playoff

Seven members of Jordan's national football team have reportedly asked not travel to Montevideo for next week's second leg of their World Cup qualifying playoff against Uruguay.

Jordan need to score at least five goals at Estadio Centenario on Wednesday to force extra time after a crushing 5-0 first-leg defeat in Amman.

According local newspaper El Pais, goalkeeper Amer Shafee - who missed the first leg through suspension - led the renegade group by telling coach Hossam Hassan "he is not ready to play".

"That prompted other players to make the same request," the newspaper said on Thursday.

Others to reportedly refuse the trip are: Amer Deeb, Hassan Abdel Fattah, Anas Bani Yaseen, Ibrahim Al Zawahra, Odai Al Saify and Saeed Morjan.

"The coach has accepted their request, even though the Jordanian football federation has tried to change their mind," the newspaper added.

Just one thing to say before the European matches: Áfram Ísland!!! Good luck to my fave place to travel to on this planet! They'll never host an Olympics, nor a World Cup, so getting this far to Brazil already is great, now fingers crossed they'll go all the way!

That was the whole plan at least with the first leg in Mexico City.

Iceland making it would be great. If Sweden can't qualify against Portugal tonight, Iceland would be a great story out of Scandinavia.

Make that in the two-legger against Sweden
