Guyana manager misses flight; will coach team via Skype versus Mexico

Jamaal Shabazz did not make the flight to Houston for personal reasons, but according to his assistant, the manager will fulfill his duties via internet.

Guyana arrived in Houston for its World Cup qualifying match against Mexico sans team manager Jamaal Shabazz, who missed the flight for "personal reasons," according to his assistant.

Wayne Dover admitted that while he could take the lion's share of duties away from Shabazz for the match, they will use an alternate strategy in order to allow Shabazz control at the BBVA Compass Stadium: Skype.

"There are technology systems [skype] that will allow him to communicate with the group," stated Dover. "The players here know the style of play, and I'm sure they'll give a great exhibition."

Guyana is currently in last place of the group the nation shares with El Salvador, Costa Rica and Mexico. El Tri has already qualified for the final hexagonal round.

"They're a superior team, they're at all the World Cups," said Dover about his next opponent, adding that the experience will ultimately benefit the South American team.

The first match between Mexico and Guyana ended with Jose Manuel de la Torre's boys notching a 3-1 win at the Estadio Azteca.

FIFA confirms Cubans defected before qualifier

The search continued for three Cuba players on Saturday after they disappeared just before a World Cup qualifying match against Canada.

FIFA confirmed in an email to Canadian Press that the players defected on Thursday, one day before the game in Toronto.

The FIFA official would not release any further details.

The defecting players left Cuba coach Alexander Gonzalez with only 11 players on his team for the match. He said the missing fourth player fell ill and wasn't able to make it to the game.

A spokesman for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection would not confirm reports that the players tried to cross into the United States at the Niagara Falls border point on Thursday.

Tom Rusert cited privacy concerns as a reason why he couldn't give out any information. He added that no arrests were made in relation to this case.

On Friday, Gonzalez lamented the departures of the missing players.

''As with any Cuban sport team that travels around the world, they're all chasing the American dream,'' he said. ''And it's difficult to try to keep the team together. ... Obviously it's a difficult situation for the team and it's tough for me to talk about it.''

Canada beat Cuba 3-0 in the match.

Last January, two players with the Cuba women's team fled to the U.S. following a match against Canada in Vancouver.

Blatter to address Cuban officials over defections

FIFA president Sepp Blatter will personally address Cuban sports authorities over defections of its soccer players after three more abandoned the team ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifier away to Canada.

"Definitely, it's not only a question for the (FIFA) competitions' department but it is a presidential question that I will address personally to the sports authorities in Cuba, by giving them a copy to give to their political authorities."

"It is a serious (matter) and we have taken note of that, we have received the reports," he told reporters on Monday.

Three Cuban players went missing in Toronto on Thursday last week prior to the game with Canada a day later.

Blatter had been due to visit Cuba as part of a Caribbean tour this month but has postponed the trip for reasons he said had nothing to do with the defections.

Maykel Galindo, who later went to play for Chivas USA in Major League Soccer, defected during the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States in 2005.

Seven members of Cuba's Olympic soccer team defected in Florida in 2008 after a game against the United States.

In October the same year, Pedro Faife and Reynier Alcantara abandoned the senior team in Washington before a World Cup qualifier against the U.S.

Last year, Yosniel Mesa defected during the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States and in March, a Cuban player left his team while they were in Tennessee for an Olympic qualifying tournament.

I honestly feel like the entire CSA should just disband. There is no way in hell that Canada should lose to Honduras 8-1 even if we sent our D team. It's just inconceivable.

Hopefully a lot of heads roll among players, coaches and especially in the organization proper. The way players are "developed" in Canada is just insane. The more people are fired and the higher up they are the better.

To go from outplaying Honduras in Toronto (0-0 draw, though, thanks to some dreadful finishing) to losing to them by seven goal on the away leg... it just does not make sense.

And Canada wasn't the only team embarrassing itself today: Germany already led 4-0 against Sweden in the second half of its qualifier in Berlin when they suddenly derailed completely and Sweden was able to score four goals within just 30 minutes, leading to a 4-4 draw. Never before has a German team lost such a big lead. I'm furious! That match turned from excellence into absolute sh.it. The boys should be ashame of themselves. With such poor mental strength, it's really no miracle that they never win a tournament.

I know, but what were the chances anyway that Canada would qualify? They have done so only once, and that was 26 years ago. You can comfort yourself with the prospect of hosting the Women's World Cup in 2015, with probably much better prospects for the Canadian team there (judging by the team's performance at the London Games).

It would have been a good shot. 3 out of 6 qualify (Mexico and USA) Panama, Canada, Jamaica, Costa Rica. Teams Canada has beaten in the past few years. If they made it Jonathon de Guzman and David Holliet would have played for Canada.
