The Olympic silver medalists took the early lead in qualifying at the world gymnastics championships Sunday with 364.291 points, finishing about 2.7 points ahead of the U.S. men. Germany, last year's bronze medalist, was third with 354.132 points. Though qualifying is only halfway over, that should be good enough to earn all three teams spots at next summer's London Olympics. baron-pierreIV
OK, gotosy, since u r posting all these updates on the Gymnastix Championships going on in Tokyo, let me ask you: Can you explain why they have this seemingly weird arrangement: 1. how/why do they arrive at an "Olym" qualifying first? 2. And then they go for individual titles? then 3. Then back to competing for Best Team competition again? How convoluted is all that? It just totally defies all simple logic. baron-pierreIV
^just posted in the "London Qualifying Events" Thread OK, it sort of helps...but my understanding is that if u r are a real standout 4 your team, then you have to perform like at least 4x in all 4 competition phases!! Gee, I'd rather be the alternate so I don't have to do anything and let the others work it off...but at the same time, join them on the medal podium!! I think I would do very well as an alternate's alternate!!
Athensfan
I'm surprised by China, but thrilled that the US qualified in second. I suspect China will come out guns blazing in the final. Disappointing more Americans didn't make the event finals -- especially Naddour on horse, Horton on high bar, Dalton on vault.
Athensfan
Question: with this rule of all event finalists qualifying to the Games, does that only apply to athletes from countries that don't qualify a team? For example, if Steven Legendre medals on floor at Worlds, but is left off the 2012 Olympic team, can he still compete in Olympic qualifying on floor (in addition to the named members of the US team)? gotosy
US regain women's world gymnastics title (AFP) TOKYO — The United States won the women's team title at the world gymnastics championships Tuesday, regaining the title they had lost to Russia last year, while Olympic champions China slipped to third. The United States, the 2007 champions, collected 179.411 points with Russia second at 175.329. China finished third at 172.820. National champion Jordyn Wieber led the US scoring as she competed in all four events while the Russian defeat could be partly attributed to errors by a fellow 16-year-old, 2010 Youth Olympic all-around champion Viktoria Komova. McKayla Maroney, 16, scored 16.033 points as the United States led Russia in their first event, vault, by more than two points at 46.816-44.479. Komova helped narrow the gap to 1.5 points in the next apparatus, uneven bars, with an error-free performance for 15.566 points. But Komova fell from balance beam after triple back flips in rotation three and the gap with the Americans widened to more than three points. In the final floor exercise, Komova stumbled back when she landed after tumbling forward to the tune of Swan Lake early in her routine. She could pick up only 13.800 points. The US women held their nerves as Maroney, Weiber and Alexandra Raisman, 17, the only holdover from the 2010 world squad, put in solid performances. gotosy
China Wins 5th World Title in Row, Tops Japan, US China has done it again, winning its fifth straight title at the world gymnastics championships Wednesday night while the United States got its first medal, a bronze, since 2003. China finished with 275.161 points, more than two points ahead of Japan (273.093) and the Americans (273.083). The Chinese walked off the floor, holding their index fingers in the air, No. 1 yet again. China has dominated men's gymnastics over the last decade, winning every world title since 2003 as well as two of the last three Olympic gold medals. gotosy
Wieber wins all-around gold at gym worlds The American rallied to beat Russia's Viktoria Komova for the all-around title at the world gymnastics championships on Thursday night, despite making mistakes on both uneven bars and floor exercise. Wieber is the sixth American to win gymnastics' biggest prize at worlds, and adds a second gold to the one she won with her U.S. teammates on Tuesday night. Wieber had a big form break on uneven bars, leaving her trailing Komova by more than a point midway through the meet. She pared the lead in half with a spectacular balance beam routine, but seemed resigned to silver after taking a big step out of bounds on floor exercise. With Komova going last, Wieber stood on the sidelines getting a pep talk and a pat on the back from Geddert. Komova was clean, but her routine didn't have the difficulty — nor anywhere near the spark — of Wieber's. When the final score was posted, Wieber was the winner. Barely. She finished with 59.382 points, just 0.033 ahead of Komova, the Youth Olympic Games champion. The 16-year-old's mouth dropped open in shock and Geddert threw his hands in the air before sprinting down the floor. China's Yao Jinnan won the bronze medal. Aly Raisman of the United States was fourth. ... AP

gotosy
Leyva dropped hard from high bar and could not continue his performance Leyva had hoped to contend for a medal after finishing third in qualifying and helping the U.S. men win the bronze medal, their first at worlds since 2003. He was in the mix until he sat down on his vault landing, but he rebounded with the third-highest score on parallel bars. That brought up high bar, where Leyva's mix is a high-risk, high-reward act that even the X-Games set would find cool.In a laid-out position, he flipped himself up and back over the bar while doing a full twist. But he couldn't get his hands back on the bar, and fell hard to the floor. He lay there for several minutes and his stepfather and coach, Yin Alvarez, jumped onto the podium to check on him. When Leyva finally did sit up, he was clearly groggy. He headed over to the chalk bucket after he got up as if to re-start his routine. Alvarez quickly turned him toward the stairs and led him off the podium. Leyva sat slumped in a chair as Alvarez patted him on the head and whispered encouragement in his ear. "It's still slightly surreal," Leyva said. "I guess you can't really do anything about it now." Leyva still has another crack at the individual medals, having qualified for Sunday's parallel bars final. http://www.dailyjournal.net/view/story/ef5858a3115e4bf096144229acdfbc33/GYM--World-Championships-Notebook/
