Sir Rols Posted September 15, 2011 Report Share Posted September 15, 2011 Boycott woe for Sri LankaINTERNATIONAL pressure over human rights violations is threatening to derail Sri Lanka's bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with the Canadian Prime Minister the latest to threaten a boycott of the country. The country, which only last month ended a 28-year state of emergency, is still reeling from a documentary reportedly showing human rights abuses during the civil war that ended in 2009. The United Nations has found "credible evidence" of war crimes committed by Sri Lankan troops and human rights groups have now called for an investigation. It prompted Canada, Australia and the UK to object to a decision to hold the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka and Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week said unless he saw progress in Sri Lanka in terms of human rights, he would not attend and would urge fellow leaders to also boycott the summit. Despite the controversy Gold Coast bid boss Mark Stockwell said the international concern about Sri Lanka would have no impact on the Games host city decision as the CGA delegates were only interested in sports. What the hell? Wouldn't Colombo be a better choice for a bid city? As as for your comments on Canada supporting terrorism GSL, just because its in some fringe book doesn't make it true. Iv never heard anything more ridiculous in my life. Perhaps worry about your own messed up country which has no business even bidding for the games. Propose a subway line from the north to the south of the city, running past most venues. Utilize existing venues in place, such as Sugathadasa Stadium for example. Build a purpose sports park. Like James and Abuja, they deserve to get cut a bit of slack, and he's far better behaved than the likes of Tulsa and Nature.
