2011 Rugby World Cup Sweep

Recommended Posts

Rugby sevens is a form of rugby union. They have the same rules, just a few variations. The other 'union' is 15-a-side. 7s is a faster quicker version of 15s. 7s is played 7 players a side for two 7 minute halves. 15s feature 15 a side playing two 40 minute halves.

Good, so they're basically the same. Thanks! ;)

I got to get busy, only five years until this sport becomes Olympic and I need to know the rules. I expect at least the Spanish women's team to compete in Rio. And now I come to think of it, there's going to be an unprecedented fight in Oceania for the Olympic spots. It's going to be really difficult for Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa to be all there... Well, that's another story, let's now go with the World Cup!

so what does it mean to be "in" cos i'm interested.

Thanks Barrack, you're in.

Now we just need seven more. It'd be good if we can get that before kick-off tomorrow. Looks like I might have to start hawking a few regulars to join in.

Anyone heard from Stevie for a while?

Interesting report:

http://www.irb.com/mm/Document/NewsMedia/MediaZone/02/04/22/88/2042288_PDF.pdf

Top ten playing nations are (in order):

England

South Africa

France

Ireland

New Zealand

Japan

Sri Lanka

Argentina

Australia

USA

All have qualified before minus Sri Lanka.

Extremely surprised to see Sri Lanka has such high playing numbers. I've never heard of them having any interest in Rugby and they've certainly never made a splash in international Rugby scene. I've just did a check of the IRB's world rankings, and they're rated number 47 in terms of results.

Actually one of my classmates is a huge Sri Lankan rugby fan, and he says it huge there.

They were in the top level of Asian rugby this year, and in 2007 were one game from qualifying for the last stages of the World Cup qualifying Asian region.

If there was a little more funding available Sri Lanka would be a major power in rugby.

Yeah, but I assume it's like the USA, Oz, Canada and NZ with soccer - in terms of playing numbers, it's the largest participant sport in each of those countries. But it still doesn't make any of us soccer powers when our passions are elsewhere.

It seems the large numbers for SL Rugby are based mainly on its presence in the SL school system. It'd be good if this in future translated into more success on the field, but for the present, as far as I know the only passion for sport that any of the countries of South Asia - India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and SL - have is for Cricket.

There is more soccer players in Canada then Doha's entire population

Lets hope they can get to the next stage of the qualification round.

I have a very limited knowledge of Group A, can you please take a stab at group A and predict the outcomes?

Here's what I wrote about Group A in the other WC thread:

The Pools

Group A: Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, Tonga

My Picks: Hard to see NZ and France not topping this group. Should be some good matches between the remaining three, though. I suppose I'll be crossing my fingers for Canada to come third.

I really think the top two are set for that group - NZ and France. Indeed, both of those are among the handful of contenders who could possibly win the tournament (the others I'd rate as chances would be Oz, England and Sth Africa - I can't see anyone else seriously contending). That said, it should be an interesting battle between Japan, Canada and Tonga for the remaining rankings in the group. All three would be fancying their chances against the others. I'd like to see Canada do well to raise their rankings and hopefully build interest - I see no reason Canada CAN'T beat Japan and even Tonga.

Interest is much needed in Canada.

Its really sad to say rugby is on the decline here. (For example the sport was removed from the Canada Games for that reason).

I think there's a great case for one of the upcoming allocated WCs (2023 or 2027) to go to Canada or the US or be co-hosted by both.

And now that Rugby 7s is in the Olympics, that can't help but be a big boost.

I hope so, Canada was replaced by the USA as a core nation in the sevens series which means less chances for competing.

2023 is likely headed to a traditional power and lets not forget Argentina.

I expect Sth Africa is in the box seat for 2023, especially after a non-traditional power (Japan) hosts 2019. And, yeah, Argentina is deserving as well. I'd love 2027 to go anywhere in the Americas.

Preferably in Canada and or USA. I believe Canada has the stadiums to host by itself.

 2035 probibly Australia,

2039 hopefully Eastern Europe or the USA.

Got to remember that Sevens could have a stronger following by then as well and could affect the 15 Man game's global popularity?

I very much doubt the tournament will come to North America in my life-time.

Given that I am 23 and the average age of a man is 78 years (in Canada at least). I will live to 2066 so that is 13 tournaments. I am guessing that one will go to Italy, one to England (again), one to Scotland/Ireland, one to France (again), two to Australia, one to Argentina, two to South Africa, another to New Zealand, one to Wales/Scotland. So that's 11 tournaments and that assume 2 are cancelled due to WWIII.

Tomorrow for sure, Danny. I've been PMing around and twisting arms to see if I can get those final spots locked up.

I'm trying to bring more people, by putting the announcement on my signature and GB microblogging.
