fatixxx
Istanbul Atatürk Olympic Stadium Atatürk Olympic Stadium (Turkish: Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı) located in İkitelli, a district in the western outskirts of Istanbul, is the largest-capacity stadium of Turkey. The stadium takes its name from Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Its construction began in 1999 and was completed in 2002. It was built for Turkey's failed 2008 Olympic Games bid and cost about €350 million. The 2008 games were awarded to Beijing. With its 76,092 (all-seater) capacity and Olympic size, it was granted the "5-star sports complex" title by the UEFA in 2004, enabling it to host the finals of UEFA events. The 2005 UEFA Champions League Final between A.C. Milan and Liverpool F.C. was played on May 25, 2005, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium. The stadium is also certified by the IAAF and IOC as a first-class venue for track and field, and has hosted several European athletic competitions. fatixxx
News update about the totally roofing of the Olympic Stadium. My personal translation beneath the quote; Olimpiyat'ın üstü kapatılıyorBaşbakan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, İstanbul'un 2020 Olimpiyatları'na adaylığını açıkladığı toplantıda Başakşehir'deki İstanbul Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı'nın üstünün tamamen kapatılacağını söyledi. Erdoğan, stadın açık tribünleri nedeniyle sıkıntı yaşandığını ifade etti. Erdoğan, açık tribünlerin de üzerinin kapatılarak stadın dünya standartlarına getirileceğini belirtti. Başbakan Erdoğan, stadın çevresine de çeşitli tesislerin yapılarak stadın kompleks haline getirileceğini kaydetti. Dilhun GENÇDAL-Özgür ARSLAN/İSTANBUL DHA | Dogan Haber News Agency Source News: http://fanatik.ekolay.net/Olimpiyatin-ustu-kapatiliyor_3_Detail_27_234377.htm Turkish PM R.T.Erdogan said at the official announcement of the candidancy for the Olympic Games, that the Olympic Stadium in the Basaksehir (Maiden Town) District will be totally roofed. Erdogan said also that there are problems (about the wind/directions) with the un-roofed parts of the Stadium that causes general problems. With the totally roofing of the Stadium it will be brought to international standarts. There will be also made several sports venues just next/beyond the stadium so that there will we created a total sport complex at the stadium area. Self-Translated I suppose that the PM knows about the General Cluster/Venues plans. It indicates that a lot of venues for the OG will be build in the vicinity of the stadium. This gives us a first idea of what we can expect. Furthermore at this topic we are going to share old/new photos about the Ataturk Olympic Stadium as well as about ideas how the stadium will be roofed totally. fatixxx
How far is the stadium from the village? It's about 19 km to the Historicle Penunsula downtown. But as Emre and Olimpik had said several times on the 'istanbul 2020' topic that Istanbul has not 1 downtown but several ones. But to Sultan Ahmet & Taksim, the 2 important downtown centers it's between 16 and 19 km. I also give you the other already Olympic Games Host Cities 'Olympic Stadium - Downtown' distances; Istanbul: 19km Sydney: 14km London (Wembley): 12km London (New Olympic Stadium): In the heart of the City Seoul: 11km Beijing: 10km Tokyo: 10km Athens: 9km Madrid: 9km Paris (Stade de France): 8km Moscow. 6km Munich 5km Rome: 5km I hope that the distances are right; Source information: http://wowturkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134&start=

Guys, it's too much. Less is more! Sheesh!! Baron, my dear Chef d'orkestre .. LoL :g: Actually you are right. But this time it is/will be totally different. Istanbul has to many new novelties about the Olympics that those never had been discussed before. I promise you that my work will surprise you. It will be fresh and with new information. (I hope so) Last but not least; in the beginning it will look "TOO MUCH", but with time it will run smoothly .. I love you as a member for your maniac sentences .. hehe .. Gangwon
I like how Istanbul has made use of their stadium for stuff other than its intended purpose. It's risky business to build an Olympic stadium before actually winning the Games, and they could have easily let their stadium rot, but they didn't. And I appreciate threads like these. It's been a while since Istanbul has been a real contender for the Games, and I personally didn't follow Istanbul's bid back then.

fatixxx
The capacity will stay the same? No. The capacity will increase to 90.000 when the back-sides of the goals are beeing build to level it up with the same altitude as the wings-tribunes. And than the totally roofing will be the finishing touch. (as it was described for the Euro 2016 candidancy) But the same will be done for the Olymics whereas the wind-directions are influence a lot of results for athletics disciplines. This stadium hosted several times European B and C groups athletic championships. At those organizations the events were a good factor to test everyting. The architectural open-ness behind the goals-part are letting a lot of wind in and it streams the other-side out. (The stadium was build by a French company back in the beginning of this millenium)

BRT? other? Thanx Mo. I'm following a long time now the Turkish News(papers) on internet about the entire Park. It will be totally greened up, with Olympic Lanes and other venues. (we will talk later about the several venues (options)). The contingent Transport link to other clusters will be the most ambitious challange of the bid. And I have a strong feeling that in this bid the Turkish Authorities want to do it right, what lacked in the previous bids. Btw, what is BRT? baron-pierreIV
Is that all, fatixx? I want MORE pictures with MORE built venues. This open land is not very conducive to votes. You must have renderings that will trump all the sexy renders that those Qataris will throw at this. MORE IS LESS!! I think you're right Baron. The Qataris have their Aspire-Zone-Park-Area. We have at the moment nothing than a eye-designed stadium. But I my idea is to discuss the Stadium Issues here. On another topic I will start a topic About the entire Olympic Park, because this stadium related topic requires a little bit more. Especially the open parts of the stadium behind the goals. I will put more pictures about different options how to close that areas and to increase the seat number and level all the seat-rows. Your comments mean a lot to me. It gives me strenght. fatih
