I never said Reno couldn't stage the Olympics. I said the IOC would never choose the sort of Olympics Reno would host.

It's only hyperbole if I'm exaggerating my opinion. I'm not. That's it. You might might not agree, but it's my sincere view. Btw, have you ever been to Reno, Quaker?

And FYI.. I have a good friend out in California who freelances for ESPN who has been out to Reno numerous times. He laughed at the notion they could host an Olympics (then again, he's from LA). But he didn't go far as to say that place is too big of a dump to pull it off like you have so often.

Enlightened me, please. When have I referred to Reno as "too big of a 'dump' to pull it off"? Especially "so often" (Baron, have I done this to that extreme in regards to Reno)?

R u sure that you're not confusing me with someone else on here that's so vehemently against a Reno Winter Olympics. I've only questioned their bid, just like you have. But I'm willing to see what they have to offer, just like you would. I really don't get where you think that I've 'dumped' on them 'so often'. Far from it.

I think Quaker was referring to Athensf; not you.

Ha. Sorry about that, I meant FYI there as in "For Your Information", not you. My bad, although that's pretty funny. No, I was not referring to you on that one, I was most definitely referring to Athens. I'm with you, I want to see them put forth a plan because right now there's a lot of variables involved with venues in not 2, but 3 core areas. And like you, I'm less than confident it's going to look all that appealing for reasons that have nothing to do with perceptions, real or otherwise imagined, about the city of Reno.

I have not been to Reno, no. I know there are stereotypes and negative connotations associated with Reno that you've been more than happy to point out to us on multiple occasions. I just don't see those factors (as opposed to the technical side of things where their real issues are) as being so overwhelming that they have no chance to convince the IOC to award them an Olympics.

One of the Reno people told me. "It (their plan, their city) is what it is." They aren't going to present anything where they have to overreach. That's a lot more than another city who already had it and threw it all back. For Tahoe-Reno, one cannot ask for more than what they are pleased to present.

That's the main variable I'm curious to see their direction on. Because they can go a couple of different ways with it. Do they rely mostly on temporary venues or existing venues? How large are these venues doing to be? No one expects them to be Vancouver which was able to offer up a 16,000 seat arena and an 18,000 seat arena. But it becomes a question of how do you weigh size versus sustainability? And like you say about them not over-reaching, then it becomes a question of how far can they push themselves before it's too much, particularly if the competition is offering bigger arenas. You're absolutely right that you can't ask for more than what they are capable of presenting. At the end of the day though, is that going to be enough to win? And I'm talking about the domestic race first because I still believe that if the United States wants a Winter Olympics in the 20s, it's less a matter of if and probably more a matter of which city.

As I've said before; and this is how I think they're going to do it:

Reno - main Figure skating venue - temporary 18,000-20,000 arena

practice rink - the Reno Events center

Short-track Skating and Curling can be housed in either the Rodeo Center (presently, seats 9,000 in rodeo config. Can probably bump that up to 10,000 for short-track) or the Lawlor Events center (10,000 - present 11,600 seating).

IBC/Media Center - the Reno Sparks Convention Center

[sacramento - 2 ice hockey arenas (a new home for the Kings is supposedly coming up)]

So I don't know what Soaring keeps saying about there's NOTHING there.

There isn't that much NEW construction required to be built. The only new, permanent construction needed are: an indoor long-track speed rink; 2 ski jumps; and a luge-bobsleigh track. If California decides to pay for the luge track; then only 2 new, permanent venues are needed in Nevada.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure these things out.

The main problem I have with this is Ice Hockey being that far away from the host city, even if it is just one event. It's a big & main event that it would cause some logistical issues. It's like having basketball or gymnastics so far flung from the main host at the Summer Games. It's a problem that I'm sure a USOC/IOC Evaluation Panel would also highly critique.

Well, it is what it is.

All bids have to make compromises. The so-called "technically perfect bid" of Chicago got thrown out in Round 1; but the very spread out Rio plan made it. So how bad can the Reno plan be? Maybe Denver will submitanother "perfect bid" but get laughed at just the same??

C'mon, Baron. U know better than that. Reno isn't Rio. There was great geopolitical incentive for the IOC to go to Rio.

And besides, even though Rio's plan is spread out, it's not counting on different cities hundreds of miles away to accommodate other events. Barring soccer, all events are still taking place "within" the city limits of Rio. Total contrast to what Reno is proposing.

OK, I'm tired. Whatever... It is what it is. Yes, ice hockey's going to be in the moon. FIgure Skating will be in Mars; Curling will be in Munich; short-track in Denver. I agree. That's the new plan for Reno!!

P.S. The plan is to keep the Johnny Weir fans away from the Wayne Gretzky fans as far as possible...maybe like 100 miles away. Maybe no fan will get beat up.

A Winter Olympics bid is not a Summer Olympics bid. Fewer venues, not as much going on, so certain things can be scrutinized more. No one is expecting a perfect bid here, I don't even know what that would be. It's a given that you're probably going to have some sort of mountain cluster and some sort of ice cluster. It just seems a little suspect that Reno doesn't have enough to host the ice venues that they would have to involve Sacramento, 132 miles away. I know there is a little precedent with Salt Lake which had venues in Ogden and in Provo (78 miles away, I actually thought they were further apart than that), but it's still something that could be perceived as a negative, especially if Reno and Tahoe are fronting the bid. As much as the CWGC and RTWGC are supposed to be working together on this one, I just worry that at the end of the day, they have competing interests that may not be what's best for putting together a bid.

If Reno is saying "It is what it is" that looks like a losing campaign if ever I saw one. It's exactly what Baron is saying "C'mon, IOC. Adjust! Compromise! We don't want to over-extend ourselves so just accept our crazy travel times, lackluster temporary venues and tacky casinos. It is what it is."

Why would anyone vote for that when they could have the Alps?

Quaker, for someone who has never even seen the city you're amazingly dismissive of my concerns. Thanks for being honest though.

Well, yeah but would the Alps want them again? I mean Alpensia is already hosting in 2018. It's time for the Sierra Nevadas!!

Oh, Baron. This is always your last line of defense.

"Ok. So the bid isn't the greatest? It's OUR TURN."

That's not going to fly with the IOC.

Because I have trouble believe that Reno is as repulsive as you're making it out to be. I get that you feel really strongly about the tacky casino culture and all that, but not everyone is going to share that opinion. And with all due respect, for as long as you've said you'd rather the USOC focus on Summer Games (as your sig still indicates), permit me to be a little skeptical that you feel that strongly about Reno and not that you're just because extra critical of them to try and dismiss a potential Winter bidder.

I'd go on, but then you'll probably tell me I'm being long-winded. Like I've said this whole time.. this Sac-ta-reno bid doesn't strike me as a winner either, but I base that mostly on the technical specs. But if somehow they did manage to pull it off, I think in 7 years they could spruce the place up to the point where people might actually have an enjoyable time there and not view it as a blight on the USOC like you seem to think it would be. I can't say I've been to Reno before but I have been to a Winter Olympics, and again, I find it hard to imagine my experience would be as bad as the picture you're painting.

I have acknowledged in many recent posts that SOGs in the 20's look increasingly like an uphill battle. I have also said that 2022 and 2026 look more favorable geopolitically.

It's disappointing that you assume I'm exaggerating the winter candidates' weaknesses in an effort to promote Summer bids. I don't work that way.

The truth is that the Winter bids have their problems. I like Salt Lake, but it's a non-starter because of 2002. I like Denver, but they have lingering budget, transportation, public support questions. I've said many times that I would support Denver if they bid.

There's only one Winter candidate I don't like and it's Reno. I genuinely believe it would be an embarrassing host. Obviously others disagree and that's fine. My opinion of Reno is not magnified by my hope for Summer Games. It's just based on.... Reno. There's a reason the chose to set that tv show there.

I don't know what the USOC's attitude is toward Reno, but I would be STUNNED if the IOC voted for them. That's it.

Please stop assuming that my ReNO posts are some political maneuver to promote Summer bids. They aren't.
