Isn't that a bit late? Quote
Rob2012 Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Possibly, but it sounds like they're being contracted to work alongside already chosen Brazilian design teams, so it might well be the case that the designs are well on their way but they need expertise in certain areas before they can be finalised. And a good way of getting that expertise is to grab firms who worked on the last Games. 1 Quote
gotosy Posted July 3, 2013 Author Report Posted July 3, 2013 Construction of Sports Halls at Barra Olympic Park begins 7/3/2013 After the Rio 2016™ Games, the venues will form part of Brazil’s first Olympic Training Centre, one of the event’s major sporting legacies Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: 2 July, 2013: Construction of the three sports halls at the Rio 2016™ Games Barra Olympic Park started on Monday, 1 July, as scheduled. The venues, which are the first at the park to have the ground broken, will host basketball, taekwondo, Olympic and Paralympic judo, wrestling, wheelchair basketball, boccia, sitting volleyball, and wheelchair rugby. Along with the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, the Velodrome and the Tennis Centre, the three halls after the Games will form part of the Olympic Training Centre (OTC), the first of its kind in Brazil. Aimed at elite athletes, the OTC will be one of the event’s major sporting legacies. Construction works at the Barra Olympic Park started last July with the dismantling of the old race track’s structure and the clearing of the site. The first stage of building the Olympic Halls includes ground drilling and the application of concrete on foundation structures to support the facilities. The venues structure will start to be built before the end of the year. A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the City Government and the Rio Mais Consortium will fund construction of the halls, the Main Press Centre (MPC), the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), a hotel and the infrastructure at the Olympic Village (which is being built nearby also in the Barra zone), in addition to construction and maintenance of the park’s infrastructure for 15 years. The City Government will seek to obtain the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the construction of the halls as well as the other permanent venues at the park. This certification system was developed by the US Green Building Council organisation to verify environmental prerequisites on how buildings are designed, constructed and operated, and is aimed at reducing their environmental impact. Rob2012 Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) Hm. That's a lot to do in three years. Since London released photo updates every few months, I always find it useful to compare how we were doing at a similar stage. Given that Rio doesn't have a huge stadium build on their Olympic Park site, compare the smaller venues' progress, and you get a better idea. London's Velodrome started construction in March 2009, the handball arena in July 2009 looked like this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/darrenlewis/3740269254/) and the Aquatic Centre looked like this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shotbygrant/3710894962/) As long as they've got a separate team of workers dedicated to each venue, there's no reason why more venues needs to equal more build time. Three years out is about right for starting these builds. Have I completely lost my sense of direction, or does the above photo show a significantly different layout from what's being portrayed on the Rio 2016 website? Looks like it, Maybe Danny can explain. Edited July 20, 2013 by RobH Quote
