Rio 2016 Olympic Park

Recommended Posts

Olympic Games organisers have called off a cycling test event on 30 April-1 May because the wooden track has not been installed in the velodrome in Rio.

Mario Andrada, a spokesman for Rio 2016, said he was sure the venue would be ready for the Olympics. The Games open on 5 August and track cycling is scheduled for 11-16 August.

What does he mean by temporary installation. Will it not be a swimming venue post Olympics? Or will it get a new pool?

One more of swim venue for Rio Olympics. Venue still under construction. Pool itself is temporary installation.

A model of sustainability, Olympic Aquatics Stadium for Rio 2016 Games is unveiled Natural ventilation system and ‘nomadic architecture’ ensure green credentials of venue that will host swimming and water polo

Sustainability was the theme as the Olympic Aquatics Stadium for the Rio 2016 Games was officially unveiled on Friday (8 April). The arena for swimming and water polo has been built using ‘nomadic architecture’ techniques that will allow it to be taken down and rebuilt as two smaller aquatics venues after the Games.

The venue also has an innovative natural ventilation system that will keep it cool while reducing energy usage. After inputting the average Games-time temperatures in Barra Olympic Park into complex mathematical calculations, 15,000 strategically positioned tiny holes were drilled into the structure to ensure a refreshing air-flow.

The government of Rio, which oversaw the venue’s construction with investment from the federal government of Brazil, said that without the energy-saving technology the equivalent of 10,000 household air conditioning units would have been needed to artificially cool the arena.

The Olympic Aquatics Stadium has two pools, one for competition and one for training, each with a capacity for 3.7 million litres of water. The seating surrounds the competition pool, with front-row seats as close as 10 metres from the pool. A special filter system will reduce the use of chemicals by 25 per cent and the water will be maintained between 25 and 28 degrees celsius, as advised by FINA, aquatic sport’s governing body.

...

As with the Future Arena, which will be dismantled and its parts used to build four public schools, the Olympic Aquatics Stadium will be taken down and reused after the Games. Its parts will be employed in the construction of two aquatics centres, one with a covered 50m pool and capacity for 6,000 people, the other with a 50m pool with capacity for 3,000 people.

This has got to be one of the ugliest looking Olympic Parks ever. When you compare it to the landscape around it, it's just the worst thing ever. It looks like an airport.

Foliage grows fast in Rio, it'll be green in August.

Yes but there has to be foliage planted in the first place to grow. There doesn't even look to be any area where they can even plant any extra green. Unless these shrubs blossom to be the size of libraries by the time the Olympics roll around, there's no helping the ugliness of this park.

What the Park currently lacks, compared with the artists' renders, is trees, which should be present all along the edges of the main walkways. These days, even quite large trees can be transplanted, so it may well be that they will arrive remarkably late, yet still look at their best in August.

Just a reminder from July(!) 2012:

With the opening ceremony less than two weeks away, there’s a mad dash to the finish line at the Olympics in London, and it has nothing to do with sprinters.

Hundreds of construction workers are toiling away inside the Olympic Park, laying cables, installing seats and adding the last layers of sparkle and polish to the venues.

There’s plenty to do.

“It’s looking a bit industrial isn’t it?” said Chris Allen, a Londoner who came to the edge of the park to have a look. “I am not seeing England’s green fields. I do hope it’s going to look better.”

Live Site looks so... artificial. I prefer a large garden with trees and flowers.

Green is not the 'Warmest Color' in the 2016 Games... :(

Fencing test event

...

Some of the world's finest swordsmen and women have come to Rio to test their skills and get a first look at Carioca Arena 3, the venue in which they will battle for Olympic glory in less than four months’ time. Two separate competitions are taking place from Saturday (23 April) to Wednesday (27 April): the Rio Fencing Grand Prix and the team world championships Finals.

The two competitions will give the Olympic facilities a thorough work-out. At Carioca Arena 3, fencers will get their first glimpse of a new X-shaped platform for the 'pistes', or fields of play, which has never been used for Olympic fencing before. The innovative design will allow up to four contests to take place at the same time. Wherever they are seated, spectators will be able to follow two matches simultaneously.
