The arena that will host the battle for Olympic boxing medals this August was officially unveiled in the Barra da Tijuca region of Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (11 May). The newly built Pavilion 6 of the Riocentro exhibition and convention centre will have a Games-time capacity of 9,000 and will also stage sitting volleyball during the Paralympic Games in September.

GL Events, the company that runs Riocentro, constructed the new venue and has also renovated the other three arenas in the complex that will be used to host Rio 2016 events (Pavilions 2,3 and 4). With a floor space of 7,500 square metres, Pavilion 6 has a 15-metre high roof that is supported by external columns, meaning there are no internal pillars that could obstruct views.

After the Games, the venue will be transformed into an amphitheater suitable for hosting sporting and cultural events as well as conventions. GL Events Brazil president Arthur Repsold said it would have a permanent capacity of 5,500 that could be extended up to 10,000.

UCI President "extremely concerned" about construction progress at Rio 2016 velodrome

International Cycling Union (UCI) President Brian Cookson has said that the governing body remains “extremely concerned” about delays to the construction of the Rio 2016 velodrome.

The Englishman admitted that "time is running out" with track cycling due to begin on August 11 and key work still needing to be done.

The official test event at the venue, which had already been pushed back, was cancelled entirely in March, due to delays installing the track.

It was initially supposed to be held between March 18 and 20 but was moved to between April 29 and May 1 before being scrapped entirely.

The test event, known as the Aquece Rio International Track Cycling Challenge, was supposed to be the first event to be held at the venue, but a scaled down trial between June 25 and 27 was arranged instead in order to give the venue a "quick test".

Rio 2016 director of communications Mario Andrada had claimed he was "120 per cent" confident the velodrome would be ready in time for the Olympics, while insisting it would be "Games ready" by May 31, when the test event was cancelled in March.

Organisers also sought to ease concerns over the progress of the Velodrome by staging an "informal test" at the venue last month.

Professional Brazilian cyclists were photographed on the track to aid the fixing of the rubber layer covering the wooden surface, which has been imported from Siberia.

However, Cookson has expressed the UCI’s ongoing concerns with the readiness of the venue with just 71 days to go until the Rio Opening Ceremony.

Track cycling competition is scheduled to take place from August 11 to 16.

“The UCI remains extremely concerned about ongoing delays to the construction of the Velodrome and have raised regular concerns with the Rio 2016 Organising Committee and the IOC,” the UCI President said.

“It has been a very difficult process and the fact that these delays have pushed back any form of test event is very worrying.

“There is still a lot of work to do to ensure that riders have the best competition conditions possible.

“Time really is running out.”

insidethegames understands that the track has now been fully installed at the venue and is not expected to be a concern ahead of the Games, although work is still required on the suspended ceiling system, as well as the heating and cooling system.

The venue is due to have the capability of housing 5,000 spectators, but insidethegames understands the base framework of the seating is currently being constructed, while media tribunes and elevators at the velodrome are also requiring work.

Olympic velodrome worry as Rio cancels builder's contract

Two months out from the Olympics, Rio de Janeiro has switched contractors for the track cycling venue, adding to concern the project will not be completed on time. The velodrome is the most delayed of the Olympic venues.

The Rio-based Tecnosolo construction company filed for bankruptcy, forcing the city's municipal government to hand the project over to a subcontractor working on the velodrome.

The city said on Monday the velodrome was 88 percent complete and the change would not impact the completion of the project.

The $43 million (38.6 million euros) cycling venue has already missed several construction deadlines and will not hold a test event. Instead there will be "training session" in late June, only six weeks before the start of the games on August 5.

Rio Olympic spokesman Mario Andrada told AP the delays could impact participation.

"We're going to open the track, but the UCI (world governing body of cycling) has told us it's very unlikely that any international cyclists will come. It's too close to the games," Andrada said.

I never thought I'd say this, but I see more green in the Olympic city of 2012 (the gray London) than the Olympic city of 2016 (the green and colorful Rio) :(

I agree that tower is hideous but the rest of the park was and still is very nice. As for Rio, well, that's what you get for having lots of delays on the works. It happened in Athens 2004 as well, with all the Olympic Park looking so gray.

just so you know grass would not cope with 200,000 people walking on it all day for 2 weeks. It would be dead within 2 days. then its a mud pit when it rains.

London had so much green coz it had a creek and wetlands running through the middle of it. I dont remember much green in Sydney or Beijing Olympic parks.

London did have that cool bouncy colourful section.

London's pretty comparable to Rio when it comes to green space in percentage terms (38% and 40% respectively). And in terms of overall area it has double comparable cities like New York and Tokyo. It's one of the greenest cities of its size in the world.

But you're right about Rio's Park. It does look a bit more concrete-y than I was expecting. Hopefully it'll get some colour when the banners go up and when the lighting is on the venues at night.

RE: the Orbit zeke. They've built a slide on it now (the world's highest), which opens soon!! (yes, it's still an ugly fvcker, but c'mon, a SLIDE!!!)

A curiosity:Two of the largest urban forests in the world are in Rio: Tijuca National Park (or Tijuca Forest) and the Pedra Branca Forest (this is the largest urban forest in the world, with 12,500 hectares).

This is very good :)
