That latest Globo Rio 2016 Olympic promo sadly got pulled.

Anyway, the Nigerian Olympic Committee announced yesterday with help from Infront Media and Sports as the latest Sub-Saharan African nation in the mix with Tanzania with the terrestrial Rio 2016 coverage. Four "renowned" Nigerian TV/media entities will provide coverage and related programming the NOC previously worked with and will beyond Rio 2016 to the widest audiences. They are Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and since Los Angeles 1984, Silverbird Communications, DAAR Communications and Smooth Promotions aka Hip TV for the Nigerian TV, radio, online/mobile Olympic rights. NTA, Silverbird, DAAR, and Hip TV will broadcast pre-games, post-games, live entertainment at the Games, Rio lifestyle, 170 hours of live and highlights programming customized for the African audience in English with live broadcast times are 4-7 pm, 8-11 pm, and 12-3 pm (Nigeria time) with strong emphasis on the seven sports Nigeria is taking part in having live coverage--football (soccer), basketball, athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis, rowing and boxing--with at least six hours coverage on each day event and full coverage of opening and closing ceremonies.

In some ways, it's a little like the Japanese TV consortium when it broadcasts the Olympics. But here in Nigeria who gets what sports to cover, or will it be shared among the four? Considering Nigeria is now Africa's biggest economy, would it make more sense in showing more Pan-African coverage with the Sub-Saharan African athletes along with the Nigerian Olympians? Of course, it's not like what SABC Sport or Supersport is doing on the pay-TV side in being really comprehensive. But it can be done on a smaller scale. Also reminds me what a lot of smaller Latin American broadcasters would do and have it in shorter programming blocks instead of more wall-to-wall:

So long as Mary Carrillo doesn't commentate on the opening ceremony I'm fine with her. Her job during the Athens OC is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Same with Bob Costas. I love the guy, but not his OC commentary. I think Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera would be a good choice to bring back they did a decent job during the Sochi OC, well at least less worse than previous ones I've heard.

Hahahahaha! Mary Carrillo's and Al Trautwig's Athens OC commentary together for the Universal NBC HD presentation did leave a lot to be desired back then. I like Costas' commentaries in the past but, to be fair, he doesn't do them in recent Olympics. Instead, he's either in the IBC studio at his desk during his primetime hosting or on location nearby the host city's Olympic Stadium. Also, I think Viera's NBC contract since expired, having fufilled them. So NBC might want to get a new female co-host with the chemistry to pair up with Lauer--and may add someone who knows significantly about Brazilian and Latin American culture beyond the sambas and soccer during the Opening Ceremony broadcast.

The BBC surely can't bring the same number of its staff from London (because it was the host nation four years ago) and onto Rio De Janeiro this summer; it attracted criticism and still got dwarfed by what NBC brought over from across the Atlantic. This year, it'll be a 455-person staff, predominantly freelance, down to Rio (40% below London 2012 and 35% below Glasgow's Commonwealth Games in 2014)--and TV (mostly shown on BBC1) and radio with an expanded digital offering through its interactive red button service, each individual sport will be streamed online. But no repeat of the experiment four years ago when the BBC had up to 24 channels of sport in cable and satellite homes with help and support from SKY. Was it because of the cost-prohibitiveness in the latter. I mean, SporTV as official host broadcaster in Brazil is taking a page from what the BBC did with 16 channels of Olympic sport this August, many of them temporary:

Seven announces Rio Olympics presentation team

I also noticed that Dennis Cometti, who would do the swimming when Seven previously had the Olympics, is not there. But he's staying put this year for its AFL coverage as the prime guy there for this time with McAvaney, Zampilas, and McLachlan Rio-bound, which apparently makes less AFL commentators missing now with Nine and FOX Sports Australia (through FOXTEL) involved. Furthermore, Raelene Boyle is not present this time to cover with McAvaney at Joao Havelenge Stadium. Kinda shocked about that but maybe Seven's direction is to get younger analysts to last for a generation. No gymnastics commentators for Seven announced? Perhaps Liz Chetkovich and Simon Reeves will return for that. What about soccer and rugby 7s, especially for Matildas games? This is perhaps where we will the predominance of the BBC and OBS world feed sportscasters. Ex-Matildas goalie Melissa Barbieri was part of 7Mate's coverage of Australia's successful AFC Olympic women's soccer campaign in Osaka, Japan, and she should be involved with that in analysis for games and in the studio set alike.

Worth noting here that the vast majority for 7 will be at the Docklands Studios calling the events on TV monitors in a studio. No network (unless you're NBC and even it keeps some people back in New York during the Olympics) sends that many people to the Olympics now. The costs are too high especially after what they paid for the rights with that distance from Australia to non-Asia/Pacific spots like Brazil, likewise as Ten and Nine did for the past Olympics. Furthermore Seven does for many of their sports now such as tennis.

Hahahahaha! Mary Carrillo's and Al Trautwig's Athens OC commentary together for the Universal NBC HD presentation did leave a lot to be desired back then. I like Costas' commentaries in the past but, to be fair, he doesn't do them in recent Olympics. Instead, he's either in the IBC studio at his desk during his primetime hosting or on location nearby the host city's Olympic Stadium. Also, I think Viera's NBC contract since expired, having fufilled them. So NBC might want to get a new female co-host with the chemistry to pair up with Lauer--and may add someone who knows significantly about Brazilian and Latin American culture beyond the sambas and soccer during the Opening Ceremony broadcast.

The BBC surely can't bring the same number of its staff from London (because it was the host nation four years ago) and onto Rio De Janeiro this summer; it attracted criticism and still got dwarfed by what NBC brought over from across the Atlantic. This year, it'll be a 455-person staff, predominantly freelance, down to Rio (40% below London 2012 and 35% below Glasgow's Commonwealth Games in 2014)--and TV (mostly shown on BBC1) and radio with an expanded digital offering through its interactive red button service, each individual sport will be streamed online. But no repeat of the experiment four years ago when the BBC had up to 24 channels of sport in cable and satellite homes with help and support from SKY. Was it because of the cost-prohibitiveness in the latter.
