Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

Recommended Posts

That latest Globo Rio 2016 Olympic promo sadly got pulled.

Anyway, the Nigerian Olympic Committee announced yesterday with help from Infront Media and Sports as the latest Sub-Saharan African nation in the mix with Tanzania with the terrestrial Rio 2016 coverage. Four "renowned" Nigerian TV/media entities will provide coverage and related programming the NOC previously worked with and will beyond Rio 2016 to the widest audiences. They are Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and since Los Angeles 1984, Silverbird Communications, DAAR Communications and Smooth Promotions aka Hip TV for the Nigerian TV, radio, online/mobile Olympic rights. NTA, Silverbird, DAAR, and Hip TV will broadcast pre-games, post-games, live entertainment at the Games, Rio lifestyle, 170 hours of live and highlights programming customized for the African audience in English with live broadcast times are 4-7 pm, 8-11 pm, and 12-3 pm (Nigeria time) with strong emphasis on the seven sports Nigeria is taking part in having live coverage--football (soccer), basketball, athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis, rowing and boxing--with at least six hours coverage on each day event and full coverage of opening and closing ceremonies.

In some ways, it's a little like the Japanese TV consortium when it broadcasts the Olympics. But here in Nigeria who gets what sports to cover, or will it be shared among the four? Considering Nigeria is now Africa's biggest economy, would it make more sense in showing more Pan-African coverage with the Sub-Saharan African athletes along with the Nigerian Olympians? Of course, it's not like what SABC Sport or Supersport is doing on the pay-TV side in being really comprehensive. But it can be done on a smaller scale. Also reminds me what a lot of smaller Latin American broadcasters would do and have it in shorter programming blocks instead of more wall-to-wall:

Claro Sports and Clarovisions's Rio 2016 coverage and videos aren't of exclusive use throughout the Spanish-speaking parts of Latin America. It's just America Movil that has it and can sublicense it to whomever along with its in-house sports channel:

CBC Sports presents its coverage of the 2016 Canadian Olympics Swimming Trials starting live today from Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre mostly online on cbcsports.ca, where the more comprehensive coverage is at. CBC has it shown on TV--and the following is one recent example why the CBC should have two TV channels each in English and French, and not just one--but only in highlight form and under its The Road To The Olympics banner later the following Saturday:

4K Rio 2016 coverage will be used for Globo's Olympic volleyball unilateral presentation (including SporTV) with IP-equipped 4K trucks outside the venues, when presented in Cannes. Other sports would get downconverted footage from NHK's 8K footage:

Speaking of NHK's 8K Rio 2016 footage, its test broadcasts will run for seven hours a day and be available at about 60 "public viewing sites" around Japan as A-PAB handles 4K, as announced today in Cannes:

Spain's Teledeporte is airing all of Spain's men's team handball Olympic repechage qualification tournament starting later this week versus Slovenia, Iran, and hosts Sweden in Malmo:

Mary Carillo and Jimmy Roberts return to NBC's Olympic coverage as correspondents in this Rio 2016 edition both reprising their respective roles. Carillo has already visited Brazil for a span of 3 weeks in her travelouge assignments regarding the issues, people, culture, and history featuring on the Olympic host city and country. Meanwhile, Roberts again will present daily stories of the Games:

So long as Mary Carrillo doesn't commentate on the opening ceremony I'm fine with her. Her job during the Athens OC is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Same with Bob Costas. I love the guy, but not his OC commentary. I think Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera would be a good choice to bring back they did a decent job during the Sochi OC, well at least less worse than previous ones I've heard.

Hahahahaha! Mary Carrillo's and Al Trautwig's Athens OC commentary together for the Universal NBC HD presentation did leave a lot to be desired back then. I like Costas' commentaries in the past but, to be fair, he doesn't do them in recent Olympics. Instead, he's either in the IBC studio at his desk during his primetime hosting or on location nearby the host city's Olympic Stadium. Also, I think Viera's NBC contract since expired, having fufilled them. So NBC might want to get a new female co-host with the chemistry to pair up with Lauer--and may add someone who knows significantly about Brazilian and Latin American culture beyond the sambas and soccer during the Opening Ceremony broadcast.

The BBC surely can't bring the same number of its staff from London (because it was the host nation four years ago) and onto Rio De Janeiro this summer; it attracted criticism and still got dwarfed by what NBC brought over from across the Atlantic. This year, it'll be a 455-person staff, predominantly freelance, down to Rio (40% below London 2012 and 35% below Glasgow's Commonwealth Games in 2014)--and TV (mostly shown on BBC1) and radio with an expanded digital offering through its interactive red button service, each individual sport will be streamed online. But no repeat of the experiment four years ago when the BBC had up to 24 channels of sport in cable and satellite homes with help and support from SKY. Was it because of the cost-prohibitiveness in the latter. I mean, SporTV as official host broadcaster in Brazil is taking a page from what the BBC did with 16 channels of Olympic sport this August, many of them temporary:

TVP Sport in Poland launches a VOD multimedia service that will really take it to the hilt come Rio 2016 offered on laptops, tablets, smartphones, and desktop PCs to watch all the Olympic action in many venues, including those that aren't televised on TVP's channels, irregardless of where they are. A special interactive library in the Olympics internet service will contain several thousand clips from the Games, as well as reports from our commentators, who will find themselves the closest to Polish Olympians and much sport while also offering a lot of behind the scenes material from Brazil on its channels on social media – Facebook, Twitter and YouTube TVP Sport. TVP has high hopes for this, needless to say:

Although it seems unbelievable now, Chromecast did not exist in 2012 (also, far fewer homes had fibre broadband). With so many ways to get online streamed content onto a big-screen TV in 2016, it no longer makes sense to rent multiple extra satellite transponders.

Yeah, true that, JMarkSnow 2012. Smart TVs are infiltrating the UK and Irish markets. Market for them is stronger in the UK though.

BREAKING: Yessssss!!! Marv Albert is going down to Rio to do the play-by-play for the Olympic men's basketball games for the first time since 2004 on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and the NBC Olympic Basketball Channel! Obviously, lots of NBA stars from many nations are involved. And that's even including the OQTs:

I also noticed that Dennis Cometti, who would do the swimming when Seven previously had the Olympics, is not there. But he's staying put this year for its AFL coverage as the prime guy there for this time with McAvaney, Zampilas, and McLachlan Rio-bound, which apparently makes less AFL commentators missing now with Nine and FOX Sports Australia (through FOXTEL) involved. Furthermore, Raelene Boyle is not present this time to cover with McAvaney at Joao Havelenge Stadium. Kinda shocked about that but maybe Seven's direction is to get younger analysts to last for a generation. No gymnastics commentators for Seven announced? Perhaps Liz Chetkovich and Simon Reeves will return for that. What about soccer and rugby 7s, especially for Matildas games? This is perhaps where we will the predominance of the BBC and OBS world feed sportscasters. Ex-Matildas goalie Melissa Barbieri was part of 7Mate's coverage of Australia's successful AFC Olympic women's soccer campaign in Osaka, Japan, and she should be involved with that in analysis for games and in the studio set alike.

Worth noting here that the vast majority for 7 will be at the Docklands Studios calling the events on TV monitors in a studio. No network (unless you're NBC and even it keeps some people back in New York during the Olympics) sends that many people to the Olympics now. The costs are too high especially after what they paid for the rights with that distance from Australia to non-Asia/Pacific spots like Brazil, likewise as Ten and Nine did for the past Olympics. Furthermore Seven does for many of their sports now such as tennis.

Must point out the possibility of PlayStation Vue making its way into Britain and Europe possibly in time for Rio 2016, pending the British and European Union broadcasting authorities' approvals, to expand the Olympic TV digital streamings with relation towards Smart TVs.

NBC and the USOC teams up to co-produce a new 20-part digital documentary series called Olympic Hometowns, revealing to all what life is like for people who grew up in a passionate sports town and its sports roots in the United States and the hopes to bring honor to those cities. Personally packed with emotion. Another example displaying how and why some particular sports are more popular and thrive in particular areas and nations than others:

Emmy Award-winning Peruvian Sammy Sadovnik will be involved with NBC Universo/Telemundo's presentation of Rio 2016 US Spanish-language coverage. Latest 7 Rio 2016 Olympic promo playfully centers on the fact Australia's national sports team colors shares in common with host nation Brazil's and may steal some home field advantage based on that fact. Never mind many Brazilians we see here are wearing the beloved soccer jerseys. But what about South Africa? Its national sports teams like the Springboks, Bafana Bafana, Proteas, and Bayana Bayana also sport green and gold too. Could we see a promo from SA on that as well on SABC and maybe SuperSport?

Four French athletes, each in different sports, on their respective journeys On The Road To Rio this summer. As chronicled by France Televisions on the 13 Weekend show showing sprinter Teddy Riner, fencer Cecilia Berder, archer Jean-Charles Valladont, and windsurfer (and dentist) Pierre Le Coq:

I strongly expected Collins will return to help cover Team USA with his brilliant basketball mind. Stopped short on Sager only because of his health issues with the cancer having sadly returned and still worry how serious it may get come August. Right now, he's good and hope and pray it stays that way.

Ann Meyers I expect to be back for the women's games. So that leaves the other Olympic basketball matches that will likely be announced again in New York on monitors TBA.

Some additional info regarding NBC's Spanish coverage of Rio 2016 this August through Telemundo and NBC Universo. Seems to me that it will more extensive than it's ever been in the US Spanish sector, though the programming structure is still yet to be determined except that it will heavily focus on the Latin diaspora and the of expected sports like basketball, soccer, boxing, taekwondo, swimming, diving, gymnastics, and track and field.

First up, Diana Taurasi (of Italian and Argentinian heritage and split time between California and Argentina), Steve Lopez, Danell Layva, and Leonel "Leo" Manzel are all part of Telemundo's and NBC Universo's Rio 2016 promotional campaign entitled "Los Juegos Olímpicos, el evento que nos une a todos" (The Olympic Games, the Event that Unites Us All) that launched today in a series of promos that will air until Rio De Janeiro's Opening Ceremony. Each will have personal stories detailed and are proud to rep the USA, continue on Telemundo/NBC Universo's storytelling nature in coverage:

Following is the Puerto Rican TV promo for NBC's Rio 2016 coverage that will be shown on Telemundo 2, Punt 2, and NBC Puerto Rico. For those who don't know, the two fingers next to the red T logo indicates that it's a Channel (or Canal) 2 with the call letters WKAQ-DT. Punt 2 is translated as Dot 2 for its digital channel 2.2, and 2.3 is for NBC's Puerto Rico affiliate usually being New York's WNBC Channel 4. Still learning what is Punt 2 and what it does. This promo emphasizes the Puerto Rican athletes like hurdler Javier Culson hoping to participates down in Rio with footage coming from the Pan American Games in Toronto and Guadalajara along with London 2012. Puerto Rican London 2012 coverage came from Puerto Rico TV Canal 6 that's now WIPR-TV and the now-defunct PRSN (Puerto Rican Sports Network) at 6.2. That, and DIRECTV

Tomorrow, Telemundo kicks off its extensive Olympic coverage for Rio 2016 with the live Olympic soccer draws for men's and women's tournaments with Andreas Cantor at 10:35pm CT:

One of the just-dropped full Telemundo/NBC Universo Spanish-language Rio 2016 promos that's exactly like the first NBC one that hit on Thanksgiving but with Spanish:

As of February, Seven netted over a record A$100 million in advertising revenue for its upcoming Rio 2016 coverage that's more cost-effective and lucrative than in 7's past Summer Olympics broadcasts, despite the unfavorable time zone difference:
http://www.adnews.com.au/news/rio-olympics-on-track-to-smash-advertising-record-seven

In a related article, 7 will de-clutter the commercial content from 10 to 8 minutes per hour while still making it cost-effective for advertisers with 2.5x more Olympic inventory than in previous Summer Games with only 14 sponsors and additional spot buyers, which will target specific demos on 7Mate (male sports) and 7TWO (female-centric sport) and the digital channel that helps reduce rates, meant for provising structure. We also know 7Mate will also show weightlifting and boxing while 7TWO will show equestrian and synchronized swimming. 7's digital channel will be where Australians can watch whatever they want. Advertising on the digital realm is still being worked on:

Orla Chennaoui from Sky Sport will help cover the Olympics in Rio. Likely as a Sky reporter on location. I'd be shocked if she was on loan for the BBC:

This brief piece explains the positional change of the Globo logo with the Olympic rings on the TV screen Neuneu10 talks about in his latest post:
http://www.tananetuai.com/entretenimento/tv-e-famosos/veja-como-ficara-a-marca-dagua-da-globo-durante-as-olimpiadas.html

Personally, it would be nice if there was some Portuguese language coverage in the USA since Brazil's also a Latin American nation. But the Portuguese American demographic isn't as lucrative and potent as the Spanish one here. Even Canada and South Africa/Angola/Mozambique/Guinea-Bissau/Cape Verde/Sao Tome & Principe managed to have some Portuguese language Olympic TV coverage in recent times through OMNI (in select sports) and SuperSport Maximo, respectively. Would be nice to have. Maybe online from NBC with perhaps a language option, but I seriously doubt it here

France Televisions (FranceTV) Sport's new Rio 2016 Olympics promo for both the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Really nice with all the joy from London 2012 and the music:

Are you ready for some more NBC Olympics tech stuff emerging? Seems to be coming fast and furiously in the last several days.

NBC Olympics will use 12 ChyronHego Mosaic XL systems with Lyric Pro software this August for NBC Olympics' on-air graphics for Rio 2016:
http://www.newscaststudio.com/2016/04/17/chyronhego-to-provide-graphics-system-for-nbc-olympics/

EMC and Presidio join forces for NBC Olympics' high-res media workflow data storage both on television and online and the engineering support and services for its production of the Rio 2016 Summer Games of the XXXI Olympiad:
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/nbc-olympics-selects-emc-and-presidio-to-provide-data-storage-for-production-of-2016-olympic-games-in-rio-300252938.html

Cisco joins in for NBC Olympics providing the IP video contribution and distribution solutions, along with networking and security solutions down in Rio De Janeiro. This means delivering more digital and online content from more cameras to more devices (a companion video is at this link with NBC Olympics' VP of Technology Craig Lau on its relationship with Cisco):
http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/nbc-olympics-selects-cisco-ip-video-networking-solutions-its-production-2016-olympic-nasdaq-csco-2115612.htm

French fencing great Laura Flessel visits SportBuzz and L'Equipe 21 to discuss being a mentor to young French fencers and also announces she'll be there for Canal+ as a sportscaster for the first time:
http://www.lequipe.fr/Medias/Actualites/Laura-flessel-invitee-de-sportbuzz-sur-l-equipe-21/652400

Reconfirmation of up to 600 VOD hours along with free live streaming available. And up up to 36 subscription-only streams providing comprehensive coverage, an Australian broadcasting first:
http://www.rapidtvnews.com/2016041542492/seven-unveils-olympic-broadcast-plans.html#axzz46DKONnR0

Seven's press release that Quaker2001 links here says that Michael Zappone will cover some Olympic soccer in Rio. Remains to be seen if he may pair with Melissa Barbieri for Matildas matches. Makes sense if he does. Also making more sense is the fact that, with rugby sevens in the Olympic program this time, Mark Braybrook should call Australia's rugby sevens teams with his vast rugby TV commentary experience (both union and league). Braybrook should have an ex-player analysis partner for them.

Slow in coming for America Movil in giving out the national TV rights in Latin America excluding Brazil in respected areas with only so far Canal 22 Mexico City and TVN Chile confirmed. Is it possible we could see Argentina's Canal 7 TV Publica next in line, Costa Rica's Repretel, Panama's TV Max 9, RCN Colombia, and Uruguay's Television Nacional?

Record proclaims itself as an official Olympic brodcaster. But it ignores the televised Olympic soccer draws. Perhaps this has something to do with Globo/SporTV being the Olympic soccer world feed producer. If Record has its own sports channel, it would air it. Instead, Record showed Speak Brazil and Hoje em Dia:
http://www.tananetuai.com/entretenimento/tv-e-famosos/intitulada-a-emissora-oficial-record-ignora-sorteio-das-olimpiadas-no-brasil.html

Head's up Kiws, SKY NZ's got some new Sky boxes with MY SKY built in with better online integration as part of SKY's Olympic Package for 5 lucky Kiwis in this contest:

Just another NBC Rio 2016 promo with a touch of Central Florida from Orlando's WESH 2:
