Globo's promo for the Paralympic OC

Slightly deceptive title to that video. Globo didn't exactly show the whole Opening Ceremony- it was on their subscription SporTV2 channel. The video commentary correctly identifies the promoted show on Globo proper as " melhores momentos " of the ceremony.

Free live coverage was on the public TV Brasil network.

Guatemalans wanting to find some radio coverage of their athletes in Rio De Janeiro turned to The Red 106.1 FM:

http://www.rcn.com.gt/

Found out that, through Gato TV, that RTG's Canal 13 de Guatemala transmitted Rio 2016. Something bizarre took place however on its first Olympic broadcast day as I discovered on Gato TV on August 5, which means it didn't show the pre-Opening Ceremony soccer. It started covering at 7am for 12 hours up to 7pm, right when the Opening Ceremony is peaking, only to pull an NBC at the Closing Ceremony to cut off at 7pm for (in order) El Chapulin, El Chavo del Ocho, and Once Upon a Time before resuming at 9-10pm before the nightly news. I'm sure some Guatemalans were not pleased with the interrupted Opening Ceremony presentation with the only the second one in Latin America. In any case, regular Olympic programming coverage on Canal 13 went from 7am-7pm under 12 hours of footage being two time zones behind Rio De Janeiro (and Canal 13 reserved primetime sometimes for Central American national team and CONCACAF Championship League soccer matches with WWE Raw, Smallville, Masters Of Horror, Fringe, Vampire Diaries, and Horse Whisperer), although it got 1-hour extra coverage at 9pm on August 14-18 that's likely a review show. Problem is, we don't know exactly what was on it each day. Apparently didn't come on August 9, 11. Coverage got cut short on August 10 and 20 at 4:30pm to make way for live Guatemalan LNF soccer with Antigua vs. Municipal and Antigua vs. Malacateco, respectively. Maybe August 17 was just that one hour at 9pm there. Even carried on after the Olympics were over from August 22-25 with overlooked and best-of material under the same 7am-7pm time slot and the 9-10pm highlights, which was where it all ended.

4 of the 6 Abu Dhabi Sports channels that broadcast Rio 2016 coverage were also available on OSN, which previously had its own domestic sports channels doing them four years ago across the Middle East--AD Sports 3, 4, 5, 6. A more detailed look will come very shortly.

Two Palau-based TV channels from PNCC broadcasted the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics: DTV channels Channel 65 in Basic and NBC on Channel 50 in the Super Basic premium package, from Saturday August 6 to Monday August 22. The rest comes from the PNCC's press release on the Palau Olympic Committee's Facebook page: "The Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC), in cooperation with the Palau National Olympic Committee (PNOC) President Frank Kyota and MCCA Minister and PNOC Secretary General Baklai Temengil, is generously sponsoring the live feed for Palau through Fiji TV, this year’s rights holder for the Pacific area. DTV Basic subscribers can watch for free on PNCC Digital TV Channel 65. The Opening Ceremony will be telecast live on Channel 65 this Saturday, August 6 at 7:50 AM Palau time. The official American broadcaster of the 2016 Rio Olympics is NBC, located on Ch. 50 in the DTV Super Basic package. Super Basic is available to Basic subscribers for an additional $5 per month (plus $8 activation fee).NBC will air the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, August 6 at 11:30 AM Palau time [the infamous "curated" tape-delayed version]." The schedule shown is only the Channel 65 version. It showed all the men's and women's soccer pre-Opening Ceremony matches with the first 4-5 of them each day live with the other 3 on tape-delay closing with a couple (Sweden/South Africa and Canada/Australia in the women and Honduras/Algeria and Mexico/Germany in the men) on replay

From 8-23, things on Channel 65 are live with everything afterwards being delayed until somewhere between 8-9am the next morning. Was actually taken and adopted from Sky Pacific's Fiji TV. Comes from the first week:

https://www.facebook.com/palau.noc/posts/1349849818377612

Also discovered this from Myanmar's SkyNet Sport TV's Facebook page. It had its 5 SkyNet Sports channels represented with the coverage coming in the late night/early morning Myanmar time in each of them with SkyNet Sports 2 having the bulk of them. Four of them handled all the men's pre-Opening Ceremony starting on Thursday night at 10:30pm with Iraq vs. Denmark on Sports-3 HD. Sports-3 also showed Portugal vs. Argentina at 3:30am with Sports-1 having Mexico vs. Germany and Nigeria vs. Japan both live at 2:30am and 7:30am, respectively. Sports-2 aired Honduras vs. Algeria at 00:30am and Sweden vs. Colombia later at 4:30am. Sports-4 took eventual gold medalists (finally!) Brazil vs. South Africa at 1:30am and Fiji vs. South Korea at 5:30am. The Opening Ceremony in Myanmar was televised live not only on SkyNet Sports-1 and SkyNet Sports HD but MRTV on the terrestrial side. For the replay it was on Sports-3 and Sports-HD. Not only this but I also found out that ASN (Olympic Channel 6), Euro Sports (Olympic Channel 7), Euro Sports News (Olympic Channel 8), Sky Net Live (Olympic Channel 9), Edge (Olympic Channel 10), Channel One (Olympic Channel 12), and Golf (Olympic Channel 11) all also got involved with much of their time going from the evening-early morning. But not all of them like Edge and Channel One went Olympic every day, though. More will come with the big stuff tomorrow.

Starting to discover that Panama had no national Olympic broadcaster for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, which is a pity it didn't here.

....And I also officially discovered the same with Nicaragua. I think, had there was local national FTA Rio Olympic programming, Nicaragua's channels would've went in the direction of Guatemala and Honduras in their respective broadcasters with the broadcasting blocks for it.

Talking tech with Vizrt with help sometimes from the likes of SVG and Newscast Studio as the tech broadcasting electronics company pays a visit in Rio De Janeiro to the IBC in Olympic Park and stopped by seeing BBC (England), CBC (Canada), CCTV (China), ARD/ZDF (Germany), TV2 (Norway), BAND (Brazil), SPORTV (Brazil), SUPERSPORT (South Africa), RTP (Portugal), FOX SPORTS (Brazil) for a behind-the-scenes look at each in its production of Rio 2016 as they all welcomed the company's reps while using Vizrt's software products to create high-quality broadcasts on its Summer Olympics blogs. Nothing further to really add here that's well mentioned in this Fortune piece. Free-to-air TV broadcasters rights holders worldwide must really start to think years ahead as technology and social media rapidly change things and gain further prominence with advertisers flocking towards the latter in record numbers. Especially Discovery Communications when it takes over the Europe-wide rights save for Russia:

Obscure TV statistics from the UK:

  • BBC One, in the weeks ending 13 and 20 August 2016, had its highest share of viewing since the weeks ending 4 and 11 August 2012
  • BBC Two, in those weeks, had its highest share of viewing since the weeks ending 16 and 23 February 2014 (when it was the core channel for Sochi)
  • Channel 4, in those weeks, had its lowest share of viewing since the weeks ending 4 and 11 August 2012, BUT ...
  • Channel 4, in the week ending 10 Sep 2016 (the latest for which consolidated figures have been released) had its highest share of viewing since the weeks ending 1 and 8 Sep 2012.

The highs were inevitably a lot less high than in 2012, but for broadcasts which went on into the small hours of the morning, not at all bad.

Now, you would think if you follow French-speaking African television, particularly Senegal, you would perhaps assume that the just-completed Rio 2016 Summer Olympics would be televised on longstanding broadcaster RTS there with its new expanded roster of channels up to RTS 5 following the deal signed with Infront Sports and Media and Group Excaf Media. But it's not the case really. Turns out it was the more commercial RDV (Radio Dunya Vision), a part of the Groupe Excaf Media, that held exclusive national coverage in Senegal and the English-speaking Gambia that's entirely surrounded by it. The IOC broadcasters list says RTS did show something but not a lot from what I see so far. RDV's Rio 2016 promo here. Like the instrumental music and want to know the name of the piece:

RDV Senegal showed 6 hours live from Rio De Janeiro each day of the Olympics including most notably the African women's champs Senegalese women's basketball team games and other members of the 20+-strong 2016 Senegalese Olympic Team that could also get seen on Groupe Excaf's TNT and Orange's satelittes that went along with SuperSport, Canal Plus Afrique, TV5Monde Afrique.

All that I gather from RTS1 was that it only aired the ceremonies. Proof of this comes from this video when Senegal enters the Maracana Stadium in the OC with RTS1 Direct logo at the upper right hand corner of the screen:

http://www.yama.tv/rts/video-ouverture-des-jeux-olympiques-rio-2016-voici-le-passage-du-senegal-rts1--84016/

As comprehensive as it's structured by NBC Olympics as it could be with respect to the business demands, what it did had nothing on what SporTV innovatingly did as the official broadcaster with its 16 TV channels overall dealing with various sports live with repeats of the best moments of each sport and were the only ones to enjoy this(--didn't SuperSport did that first years ago?). Guess this has as much to do with being in a host nation catering this banquet where the demand is expected to be greater to its public. Makes me wonder with NBC holding the rights up to 2032 and perhaps assuming LA will be a part of this should it get the 2024 Summer Olympic rights (with no need for "curating" the ceremonies during the US primetime then) and undoubtably the tech changes forthcoming up to then in our media consumption is how will NBC adjust and adapt to the forthcoming realities in terms of its scheduling starting with Tokyo 2020. Online streaming with live multiple feeds, personal customization, OTT, cordcutting, and 8KTV surely will act as more potent forces. I, like writer Luis E. Romero who loves the Brazilian TV coverage from SporTV, wish the Tokyo 2020 and Pyongchang 2018 broadcast rights holders perform their work to better understand their actual and diverse audiences who will watch the upcoming Olympics and have interest in it and how they will consume it. The current US Olympic programming model will not be useful in the long run any longer in the years ahead:

Since we're talking about Brazil, Rio Judge Marcia Leite Nery now blocks and orders the OBS equipment and vehicle assets and bank account seizure following Rio 2016, both versions since this past weekend, as Brazilian authorities "want to secure compensation for 'possible damages to workers hired by OBS' " in working more and irregular labor hours than relegated on its 2000 OBS employees thus breaking Brazil's labor laws, according to the legal decision, for claiming that OBS "must pay damages to 'overworked' employees at both the Olympics and Paralympics":

Just expect that Singapore's government, through the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth, involving into paying a share of the live Rio 2016 TV rights is more of a one-off, largely due to Joseph Schooling's very serious gold medal contention. Not really interested in getting into the escalating rights fees. If a national public broadcaster isn't involved in the share of the Olympic broadcast rights, it must entirely be left up to Mediacorp and Singapore's pay-TV broadcasters:

Excellent insight into the tech nuts and bolts of NBC Olympics' Rio 2016 high-level, yet fragmented overall, streaming involving 1100-person team based back in Stamford, Connecticut in what formerly was a Clairol shampoo factory that includes 13 TV commentary booths to a third of the nation. Still treats TV as the mothership platform with lots of value despite decline there. Always room for improvement for Pyongchang and beyond with online, tech material, and social media. As long as the advertisers are happy ultimately with NBC Sports Group's Olympic presentation:

My God, when will a good number of us Americans ever get to grow up about this alleged Olympic broadcasting indecency on NBC being inappropriate to show towards a general audience saying it's harmful to minors! We been through this before with the Athens Opening Ceremony, remember?! Don't they have anything else better to complain about?! Not to go onto an extensive rant here, but it is "silly, sad, and most political" (no shock in an English-speaking nation like the USA) where we're generally more conservative when it comes to grappling with sex/nudity/profanity that will ultimately brings forth erotophobic issues that keeps and enhance our collective sex issues further as a society preventing and embracing a general environment that's positive, mutually dignifying, healthy, and safe and has as much to do with longstanding and lingering middle class insecurities regarding sex to stay ahead of the lower classes reinforcing arbitrary barriers with Calvinistic/Puritan/Victorian-era relics--I even hate the MPAA ratings cliche used to further describe the appropriateness. Even Australia and Britain aren't as skittish as we are--and I think even the Canadians (with or without the Quebecois) are ahead of us now. Your kids, chances are, will not turn into morally corrupt, nyphomanical freaks or instantly turn blind upon the incidental sight of them, fleeting or not; really no concrete evidence that it's damaging and to the degree. Those nations above, Latin Americans, and the Europeans certainly aren't. The athletes surely as hell don't compete for you and your arbitrary standards! Better stay away from the Olympic Village with this in mind!  smh in utter disgust:

Damn rant over! Time now to calm my damn nerves for a general overview of how Argentina's Rio 2016 broadcasters--TyC Sports, ESPN, Canal 7 TV Publica Argentina, DIRECTV, and FOX Sports--tackled the coverage:

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1924768-la-tv-de-rio-2016-la-cobertura-argentina-las-horas-en-vivo-y-como-ver-online-los-juegos-olimpicos

Canal 7 beats out Telefe, El Trece, and Canal 9, etc. in the ratings the weekend of August 12-14 with its Olympic tennis, pole vault, and men's handball. All involving Team Argentina:

http://www.lanacion.com.ar/1928357-con-los-juegos-olimpicos-la-tv-publica-lidero-la-audiencia-en-el-fin-de-semana

And this is Canal 7 TV Publica Argentina promoting what was scheduled to show live for its Rio 2016 broadcast on Sunday, August 7 starting at 9am Argentina/Rio De Janeiro time with special emphasis on Argentina's athletes to Capital Cities' "Chartreuse" instrumental:

When NHK readied its live pilot 8K broadcasting debut of the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony with special pre-taped clips for viewing locations across Tokyo and in Osaka with no 8KTV yet for the Japanese masses:

Dutch Olympic TV viewers got upset over Nederland 1/NPO 1 failing to show live events and instead placing rebroadcasts of beach volleyball, gymnastics, handball Spain's women's field hockey (perhaps instead of Team NL's women's team live match), and the men's cycling road race on Sunday August 7, much to their annoyance. And took to Twitter to understandably vent their frustrations. NOS said it had to do with the rowing venue's high winds delaying things for an hour at least and had to fill in that programming hole with little going on at the time. Did show Dutch boxer Enrico Lacruz in action but didn't plan on having a boxing commentator:

Yeah, that's very true. Assumming Los Angeles wins, it will very much be exactly like that when ABC showed the 1984 version live--was it actually tape-delayed for the West Coast back then or shown live and re-aired immediately afterwards? Notice how it went from broad daylight to dusk during the course of the Opening Ceremony. Certainly would not be surprised if NBC may request, if Los Angeles gets 2024, to the organizers to push it up to 8 OR even 9pm ET.

SuperSport's announcement of its 7 dedicated channels--SS1, SS4, SS5, SS6, SS7, SS12, SS13, SS14--for its Rio 2016 coverage across Sub-Saharan Africa from a Kenyan perspective in Nairobi with a Sh1 million donation to Team Kenya:

When SporTV launches its dedicated multiple Olympic TV channels shortly after midnight on August 1 from its mosaic channel on Channel 500. Many of them starting with the best moments from London, usually involving though not always Brazil, with SporTV 4 heading immediately towards the official Olympic films like the London one called First. Looks like it was taken from when SporTV News was based at the SporTV/Globo Olympic Park studios as they all look at the mosaic monitor.

Another week's consolidated UK ratings now in.

11 of Channel 4's Top 20 shows in the week ending 18 September were Paralympic sport broadcasts, and a further 6 were episodes of "The Last Leg Live From Rio". The remaining three were the top slot (Bear Grylls' "Celebrity Island") and two Formula One Grand Prix broadcasts from Singapore.

Overall, Channel 4's share of viewing for the week was even higher than in the first week of the Paralympics, at 7.1%. Interestingly, however, the channel's overall reach as a percentage of the UK population was about 6% down, because its primetime shows in a normal week vary hugely from night to night, bringing in multiple niche audiences.

Although it was disappointing for the South Asia overall at the Olympics especially for India with its largest-ever Summer Olympic contingent, Star Sports' Rio 2016 Summer Olympics viewership shatters its own London 2012 record (92 million) with 191 million throughout India in urban areas among the South Asian nations that got the multichannel 3000-hour Star Sports presentation (with IOC feeds and shared with Doordarshan), according to BARC data. Decided to delay the big one until the next week. Just now got my notebook with my important info to share with you retrieved following my leaving them on the bus the other day. Allows me time to gather everything.

Canal 22 Mexico City's Rio 2016 promo--actually, a capsule--centers on the Italian fencing legend that's Valentina Vezzali, who actually didn't compete in Rio but rather retired here incredible career at a Rio fencing test event. By then, she had become a politician among other things on her plate. You may recall 4 years ago, she was the subject of one of those Gordon Pinsent-narrated "Believe" TSN promos that focuses on the Olympians:

  • 1 month later...

Like to get something in here before I head into the lengthy US Thanksgiving/Black Friday break.

One we know for a longtime about NBC's Olympic coverage is that it can't please us with everything we hardcore Olympic followers hope it'll do. The Seven Network is definitely no different with its own Australian Olympic TV coverage with notoriously too many ads, too many promos, not enough Australians, too many Australians, good commentary, bad commentary, the list is endless. Can't please everyone including us. Sometimes the broadcast rights holders can't please anybody. Yet, it finished strong with a record audience and revenue with 40% of the FTA audience including the desired 16-39 age range demographic. But 7 won't be swimming in the dollars. Nice the primary Seven was in HD but shockingly neither 7Mate and 7TWO were in HD during the Rio 2016 coverage, making it worse than FOXTEL's 8 channels in that regard:

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/rio-olympics-2016-has-the-tv-broadcast-been-a-hit-for-the-seven-network-20160819-gqwv8x.html

Not surprisingly, swimming dominated the most-watched Rio 2016 individual events, sweeping the top 10. Ratings were even when Australia disappointed here and there overall:

Danmark Radio's OL i Rio 2016 promo is certainly one that displays no lack of enthusiasm. This DR piece has several of its Rio 2016 sportscasters--in order of appearance: Peter Moller, Mads Steffensen, Henrik Liniger, Peter Falktoft, Kim Bildsoe Lassen, Tina Muller, Mette Bluhme Rieck, and Jens Joseph Juulsager--all reacting in various states of emotion and celebration to all the London 2012 footage heavy on the Team Danmark in the sports DR covered on its portion of the expanded Danish Olympic broadcast it shared with TV2's channels on DR1 and DR3: track and field, swimming, rowing, cycling, shooting, badminton, and fencing. Beach volleyball, interestingly, is nowhere to be found here, where it got massive coverage on DR:

Under the tagline of "re-live the Kenyan Spirit", KBC Channel 1 presented live and exclusive FTA coverage of Rio 2016 featuring the likes of the African qualifiers the Kenyan Rugby 7s and David Rushida

Access to TV2 Norge's online coverage of its Rio 2016 transmission was later offered free to new TV 2 Sumo subscribers with its total of 3300 hours there and with a new campaign to boot after talks with the Norwegian Media Authority:

Once again Durban, I feel obligated to ask.. any particular reason you decided to share these stories and these clips more than 3 months after the Olympics? (And maybe it's just me, but it feels like it might as well have been a year ago).  I understand your computer access is limited, but I still find it curious you wait so long to post all these things on here that have all been out there since August.

(And maybe it's just me, but it feels like it might as well have been a year ago).  I understand your computer access is limited, but I still find it curious you wait so long to post all these things on here that have all been out there since August.

Just because a video is "out there" doesn't mean it's easy to find. From time to time, even over the past few weeks, I unexpectedly discover London 2012 Opening Ceremony coverage that was posted within days of the event, yet has been all-but-ignored by search algorithms, and scarcely ever viewed in 4 years.

Very much what JMarkSnow2012 says along with...sometimes there may be some georestrictions on YouTube until sometime afterwards that it pops up. I'm not yet a premium member, and that can also impact the limit of videos (to just two right now) I can submit at this time. The Olympics and the media here are like Matryushka dolls: there's ALWAYS something interesting and worthwhile online through usually a Google search I can submit on this subject for a specific Games well after the competition is over that have been ignored. On the contrary, I can spot algorithm-wise somethings we aren't aware of at the leadup and during the Olympics. I want to be all-encompassing and bring lots of info from many nations as much as possible. Not just the major ones like of course NBC, CBC, Seven Network, the BBC, France Televisions, Globo/SporTV, RAI. A lot of cases, it can just be timing and getting everything together, which I actually am right now with, like, the DR and TV2 Rio 2016 TV schedule and its general Danish coverage plans that I'll share very soon among other things. And yes, there are other priorities taking place that can intercept things. So yes, I'll continue on. Even with Sochi's as long it remains open overall. Otherwise, it goes the Past Olympic Media Coverage thread.

Having said all that, let's visit Uruguay again. TNU and Vera+ teamed over the summer with a major announcement of the launch of 15 HD omnibus broadband broadcasting channels nationwide for both online and mobile devices through Antel to $250 in 60GB capacity for all different Internet user plans to go along with the 300 TV hours on TNU. Not just for Montevideo. Started on Friday, August 8 under the #Rio2016 launch. Had Uruguay qualified for soccer like it did four years ago in London, it would no doubt been earlier:

TV Tokyo's official Rio 2016 theme and cheering songs are "Kishikaisei", their lead single from their third album, and "MI RAI I", respectively, both from the 8-member J-rock act Wagakki Band:

Former French gymnast Daniel Bouhail got into trouble during the Rio Summer Olympics and earning CSA complaints when referring to the Japanese gymnastics team on France Televisions as "a bunch of little Pikachus". Probrably the ones complaining weren't Japanese in France. That was seemingly nothing in comparison to when announcer Daniel Bilalian made comments during the Rio Summer Olympics opening ceremony when discussing Brazil’s history, Bilalian reportedly expressed the opinion that the country “needed” its African slaves Brazil brought over to develop the nation. Includes hilarious faux apology on the writer's suspension. Irony here is when the Japanese do something like this, it gets quickly excused and seen at worst as ignorance/naivete (which on the face of this Bouhail comment seems like that to me), but when a westerner makes any similar kind of childish remark, then it's deemed racism:

LOL, you guys are a riot.

Don't give me this nonsense about algorithms about videos being hard to find.  Durban, I will continue to give you credit for finding all sorts of random Olympic videos and news stories from around the world.  But you're still sharing these months after the fact and treating like it's new information.  Even though the Olympics have been over for more than 3 months now.  Again, I know your computer access is limited, but you're still posting and discussing stories that have long since stopped being news-worthy.  You suddenly decided you wanted to discussed the reactions to Australia's Olympic coverage from an article posted the day of the closing ceremony?  A former french gymnast made a comment during the first week of the games and this is supposed to be interesting now.. why?

I understand you have other priorities and all, but the rest of us were consuming and talking about the Olympics back in August.  You're coming at this way late.  Again, far be it from me to tell you when or what to post, but if you're trying to engage people in discussion instead of create something of a travelogue here for your own amusement, you're not going to draw people's attention when the rest of us have long since moved on from the Olympics.  And this is less "hey, let me update you on the Olympics" and more "hey, I found some news from that thing we were all talking about a while back that I'm just getting around to."  I guess what I'm saying is why now and not when it was actually relevant?

Durban was also consuming and talking about the Olympics, on this very thread, back in August.

Just what on earth is your point?

I'm well aware, just as I know he is the top contributor to this thread in the lead up to the Olympics.  Although to be fair, he posted during Rio.. "Did manage to watch a morsel here and there online but on NBC's streams"  Maybe that's part of why he's so eager to share all this from Olympic coverage around the world on his own time and again, not trying to reign on his parade here.  But when you're talking about search algorithms and geo-restrictions and the like.. no, that's not why Durban decided to post this here and now.  I understand and respect his passion for this subject, but I still wonder (I somewhat know the answer to this question) why this a subject of interest now when it would have been a lot more interesting months ago?  It's not as if Durban hasn't posted on other things.  If this was some sort of blog on his part - as it often is - I'm totally into it.  Less so well after the Olympics are over.
