Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

Recommended Posts

TVN's newest Rio 2016 promo really is imported from one of the current IOC's PSAs, except for that one quickie shot of fans in the stands with a Chilean flag forest, the TVN female voiceover, and the official Olympic channel ID at the end

Today Globo showed this IOC campaign on prime time

Considering NBC has a great abundance of its own hi-tech video cameras to use at every venue and in multiple areas and this Olympics is at a more usable time zone for NBC, I can see a fusion between their feed and the OBS' for the streaming. Just that we won't always see the Rio OBS logo at the beginning or the end.

Incorrect. At some venues, yes. But at a lot of venues, they're relying on the world feed and have no presence at all. Remember a lot of sports are being called off monitors in Stamford rather than on site. And even at those where they have their own set-up, that production is for the benefit of NBC's TV broadcast, not to provide help for streaming when all they have to do is plug in to the world feed and they're good to go.

And I still don't understand what the obsession is here with the OBS logo, but then again, there are a lot of strange obsessions on this website I don't get.

The Katy Perry song for NBC

You can read more about Katy Perry's new single "Rise" and NBC'S and her plans in using the song during the NBC Olympics 2016 broadcast in this press release here, which includes plans for a cinema edition pre-feature presentation spot starting today across 20,000 movie theatres across the United States. It will be all over NBCUniversal’s broadcast, cable, digital, social, and radio platforms:

NBC OLYMPICS FEATURES NEW KATY PERRY ANTHEM RISE

The Australian Olympic Committee has sic'ed its lawyers on non-sponsor Telstra for its "misleading" Olympic campaign. I know Telstra is not an Australian Olympic Team sponsor like its rival Optus is and can make distinctions between the two; Telstra can't say or use the Olympics anyway down there. But can make roundabout ways with Rio and say this is built upon its relationship with the Seven Network. I know all this and wouldn't tear my hair out over. But with lots of money at stake talks. Had 7 rejected it outright, Telstra would not have proceeded. Or maybe if it asked Telstra to make known publicly that it is not an AOC sponsor, would the campaign still be OK in the AOC's eyes?

Paraguay's Leryn Franco, the hottie javelin thrower now hosting a fitness TV program having left the sport two years ago, will cover Rio 2016 for Tigo Sports as an accredited media member possibly with fellow Paraguayan sports personality Ramón Jiménez Gaona in tow. Franco just recently carried the torch in Brazil:

RTVE presents how Spanish Olympic fans can catch all the 4500 hours (later 6000 hours on demand) of digital Rio 2016 action it will present online, tablets, smartphones, social networking, smart TVs/video game consoles, and smartwatches through 19 live streams:

According OGlobo, for ratings NBC wants the order of parade of nations in English, and not in Portuguese lol

In 2012 the USA delegation was the 195th to enter, in Rio will be the 64th...

Just how much more derpy can NBC get? I mean, their power hunger is getting to the point where I'd rather play Smash Bros and get ko'd by Bayonetta than watch NBC's coverage.

Not knowing much about you.. willing to guess that you'll actually wind up watching more of NBC's coverage than playing Smash Bros during the Olympics next month.

I'm gonna have to call B.S. on this. NBC isn't stupid enough to actually ask the Rio organizing committee to announce the counties in English. They know the tradition. I would like to say that most Americans also know the tradition of the host counties native language being used for the Parade of Nations, but it's America... anything could happen.

The 2016 Olympics is a huge challenge in media issue.

Be the Brazilian television event most watched in the year , it is a major challenge:

The impeachment reached 100 million viewers on TV. The opening of the London 2012 reached 16 million.

Of course, TV RECORD does not have the same projection TV GLOBO , so no comparison .

I guess NBC is afraid it will lose the audience after the US enters and people will start flipping to other channels and not come back until the lighting of the cauldron. But if NBC has its way, people will just flip to other channels while the first 195 of so nations enter, checking in occasionally to see how far the parade has progressed.

Yes.
But I believe that grand ceremony is necessary to hold the hearing.
In Brazil the ceremonies tend to bet a lot of ' people ' which harms great performances .
Americans (and I ) love great ceremonies , I want a big show , and not something that touches my heart.
The parade of nations is very tiring. It needs to be faster, the 206 NOC 's should parade at 1.30am at most.
-
TV Globo also has influence she paid a lot to the IOC and is also the official sponsor . Even won a studio in the center of the Olympic Park , not even NBC achieved it .
She managed to put volleyball games and events primetime ace 22h (probably supporting the idea NBC ) to leave after the drama of 9 .

I believe that parade in 2012 was 1 hour 39 minutes, so an hour and a half is possible. If they restricted it to just athletes (no coaches, officials, honored guests, and girls who get carried away and want to be part of India's delegation), they could shave a few minutes off the procession. Or perhaps by altering the route that they take around the stadium (I think Baron referenced the 2006 Asian Games in his book or maybe it was in these boards somewhere).

Sure they'd ask for something like that. Probably won't get it though. They did manage to convince FINA to flip flop the prelim and finals sessions of swimming back in 2008 in Beijing, so crazy things have been known to happen. They know they're probably not going to get this one, but give them credit for trying. And if they don't get it, who's going to care or even know about it?

That's also the problem with not showing the ceremony live. Then again, what else is going to be on TV on a Friday night in August that people are likely to switch over to?

Outside of NBC's massive Olympic TV multiyear contract, the host broadcasters should have a say in the scheduling too.

Of course, we obviously know NBC News will be in tow in Rio De Janeiro with not just its Olympic-related news coverage with Lester Holt, Matt Lauer, and much of the NBC TODAY crew but even with The Band Perry making a performance down there:

Don't think NBC's wish will be granted there. Who cares? Part of the appeal of the Parade of Nations is learning what other nations names' are called in the host nations' languages other than English, wherever it may be.

People will also be out of the house on that day with the start of the weekend. Though there are some reruns showing, US summer TV is definitely not what it traditionally used to be here; there's now a summer TV season all over the channels, particularly cable. Nonetheless, there's little TV competition, as you say, that many Americans will in a tentpole manner tune to outside the Summer Olympics in reaction in August.
