Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

Recommended Posts

The largest urban forest is in Rio. (That's why I don't understand the criticism of the Olympic Park. We don't need camouflage in the arenas just to show that the city is not gray) You can see monkeys, lizards and other animals in places like Corcovado Mountain and Botanical Garden. I don't think they care about accuracy in the video since they put the Olympic Stadium in Botafogo beach. We don't have black panthers and the armadillo and tamanduá is not from tihis region, but even so I loved it.

FFS! I feared the opening ceremony would be delayed since I didn't see any of the press releases list the ceremony as live. What a farce since they're coverage usually starts at 7:30 ET anyway. So much for the most live Olympics ever on NBC....

Even I'm fired up on Twitter over this one and I'm usually the NBC apologist. I get that this is about ad dollars, I just question how much they stand to gain with that hour delay versus what they might lose.

UGH! An hour?! That way, NBC can show the commercials in the standard breaks to pump up the ad revenue and may butcher some things like Bach's Sochi speech. Perhaps this may be some accommodation to West Coast in some degree. To say nothing about the Alaska/Hawaii time zone. Makes me wonder if Telemundo/NBC Universo could conduct theirs live, albeit in Spanish. I too feared the lack of mention on their press releases failing to happily mention a LIVE Opening Ceremony. Dang!

Actually I like the BBC Sport 2016 Olympic promo pretty much with the same animation and production team from RKCR/Y&R, directed by Againstallodds (Derek Picken, Niklas Rissler). Animals looks pretty life-like. To Brazilians who criticize this trailer, remember this is primarily aimed at the UK audiences who tend to very much link Brazil with the Amazon rain forest. Accuracy would not necessarily have a place here in pieces like this despite the pointing out the large urban rain forest near Rio De Janeiro here. That and the fact that Brazil is so much more than the Amazon and Rio De Janeiro itself:

Found out on Schweizer Fernsehen's website that Bernard Thurnheer and Ruedi Leuthold plan to co-host the Schweizer Fernsehen broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies live on SF Zwei from 00:50-4:30 on Saturday August 6. Before that at 22:20 there's Rio Aktuell and at 23:10 the Rio Countdown Olympic/OC preview show. After the OC, it's Rio Countdown and from 6-9 there will be 15-minute Rio Updates on that channel too prior to a Saturday morning replay, Just checked the TV schedule, SF2 will not televise the pre-Opening Ceremony soccer; had the Swiss women qualified, it surely would:

There's two seasons also on SF2 called My Way To Rio centering on 6-time Swiss Olympian Marco "Buxi" Buchel testing the strength and conditioning program to several Swiss athletes who have real Olympic chances:

How would residents of various Commonwealth Caribbean nations and territories celebrate their nations' success in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics while watching Flow Sports? Or as the promo says, "When the magic happens?" Let those who speak this share you how in this Flow Sports #FlowToRio promo:

Worthy of a read that just emerged from TV Technology to learn about how the Madrid-based OBS will operate all that technology, including all the newer and state-of-the-art aspects of it and the training of it all, in sending the unbiased world visual and audio feeds from Rio De Janeiro as the action increasingly get more digitized rather than televised. And of the IBC itself at Barra. Also says NBC will produce the Olympic golf competition and SKY NZ aforementionedly handle the rugby sevens as two of the 52 MDSs from around the world:

A little further more (and clearer) details regarding RAI in Italy and San Marino. It'll be a combined 1000 hours on the TV side with RAI 2 (the designated Olympic Network), RAI Sport 1, and RAI Sport 2. 180 live hours on RAI Radio One's 19 stations across Italy. And yes, there will VR coverage for Italians. 100 hours of it. RAI will also report from Casa Italy. Rai Sport will 47 sportscasters among the commentators, conductors, coordinators involved in the story of the games. 16 technicians commentators. Swimming and Athletics for RAI will have the mixed zone for live interviews. Scheduled one-way UMTS coverage for competitions not covered by Olympic Broadcasting. All the signals produced by OBS will be offered FOR live streaming for the web in 36 special Internet streaming channels which will also be available through Video On Demand, interviews, statistics, photo gallery, results and more. Includes a list of the RAI analysts and programming times to cover Rio 2016 in the second link set:

An additional one comes from SporTV, which has a new 6-part documentary series planned, each one lasting 22-25 minutes starting yesterday, that will humanize a Brazilian athlete on Time Brasil as they prepare for the first-ever Olympics in South America--the ones involved are Pedro Solberg (beach volleyball), Juliana Veloso (platform diving), Aline Ramos (wrestling), Hederson Stefani (track and field), Marcus Vinicius D’Almeida (archery), and Robenilson de Jesus (boxing). Produced by Zola, directed by José Henrique Fonseca, and written by Rubem Fonseca, this series is titled Sonhadores and will also be shown on SporTV News--Noite and on SporTV Play:

Record TV's more recent promo--and animated--for its broadcast of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics with its typical multisport event theme. It's not even like the BBC London one. Just its own animation. Could this act as an intro too?

You can download the RadioSporten 100-day countdown special podcast here with special guests as they look at Sweden's top medal hopes with some history. Hosted by Bengt Skott and Alexander Lundholm:

EMTV Papua New Guinea announced its exclusive live free-to-air Rio 2016 Olympic TV broadcasting rights from start to finish back in February following its successful airing of the Pacific Games in Port Moresby hosted last year:

Nearly two-thirds of British TV viewers will second screen this year's Summer Olympics on a portable device or online. And 97% of these TV viewers will stay at home, much, much higher than the just-completed Euro 2016. Guess with soccer being the sole sport at the Euros, people prefer to make it more of a communal affair to enhance the fan viewing experience as opposed to the Olympics, where there are multiple sports to watch from:

http://www.tvbeurope.com/two-thirds-of-olympics-tv-viewers-will-second-screen/

Hong Kong's Chinese-language Phoenix Satelitte TV picked up an Olympic documentary though we don't know what it is:

I must say the recent developments regarding the host Brazilian Rio 2016 Olympic TV broadcasters not named SporTV and Globo TV, ESPN Brasil, Fox Sports Brazil are very disappointing. Mind you, Record has got some stuff like who will cover the sports and Olympic sports news. But by now being in the host nation, we should have some multiple concrete material from them by now. Like for example, we still do not know exactly how many TV hours Record and Band will produce and air for this. Hell, we still don't know about BandSports' overall coverage plans. We get it now in part: Globo, Record, and Bandeirantes all adore telenovelas, a massive Brazilian TV institution that brings massive TV ratings for the networks for years and outright refuse to sacrifice them in favor of more wall-to-wall coverage no matter temporary the Olympics are--still strongly believe 160 hours on Globo is still rather low for a free-to-air host TV network at a time when TV networks are increasing their coverage and always had; the 200+ hour plateau would be more appropriate. But I'm not part of them. However, Globo and SporTV are miles ahead of their competitors when it comes to putting out public info on a periodical basis on their Rio 2016 coverage plans, the most ambitious and massive in Brazilian TV history. Bigger than the FIFA World Cup two years ago for them. Maybe Record and Band are working on all one-stop press releases to remedy this.

Altice USA licenses fully all 6755 multiplatform hours of NBC's programming coverage content of Rio 2016 live and on-demand:

British diver Tom Daley is the subject of an upcoming ITV documentary shown in Britain (may also get shown on Ireland's TV3), his third with Twofour:

This is absolutely inexcusable. Even if they want to delay the TV broadcast, there is no excuse for not streaming the ceremony live. We should not be stuck with an edited broadcast (and awful commentary) when the ceremony is only one hour ahead of Eastern time.

It's still the most live Olympics ever on NBC. 1 night on delay doesn't mean the entire Olympics are on delay as some people have convinced themselves is the case.

NBC is still a business. Can't fault them for wanting to operate that way. But I still question whether or not that 1 hour will make a big difference in their ad revenue. Apparently they think it will.

They're trying to protect viewership on TV. Which I get, except I think they're losing something with a 1-hour time shift (as opposed to London or Sochi where a delay to primetime is inevitable, but it means their broadcast stats after the ceremony ends). But yes, I agree than an alternative broadcast (particularly one not subject to the whims of NBC's editing) should be there.

Hello friends great to be back here for the games here's an article with full quotes from the executives involved

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/olympics/NBC_wont_broadcast_Rio_Olympics_opening_ceremonies_live.html

I don't care what NBC's research says, I can't believe they're still furthering the "women don't care about results" narrative in 2016. It's so sexist.

There's a lot of bullsh*t being spewed in that article about why the ceremony shouldn't be live. Whether it's a sports event or a cultural event, it's a major international event, and it should be available live in some format.

I was tweeting back and forth with the author much of the day. Glad he included some quotes from the execs. But someone else was tweeting with him how there was a lot of "honesty" in NBC's rationale behind the ceremonies. Like you, I call a lot of bullshit on these. It would be much more refreshing and honest if they said this is about them and their bottom line more than anything else, not that we need "context" to follow the event.

I know it will still be the most live ever. I just thought there was no way they would do this with it just one hour ahead and after #NBCFail. Also I meant to thank you for discussing NBC's live coverage in 2002.

I just hope I can find a high quality version of BBC/CBC to watch live online and DVR NBC's coverage to quickly watch their non-OC portions before waking up at 7:15 the next morning for the first full day of competition. I do always love their opening hype video.

Also slightly ironic to me that NBC will show its preview as Mexico VS Germany in men's soccer is occuring on NBCSN, since its sure to be the most watched match of the day. There's an open hour at 8pm ET the night before between the US/NZ and FRA/COL matches. Since the preview is supposed to be "live" it'd make sense to me to have highlights from the just concluded US match, interview American players, and preview the upcoming match and day ahead of soccer. Also since this preview is occuring the day before, I feel like NBC doesn't need "context" before the opening ceremony.

How is that ironic? NBC has no control over the soccer schedule and they wouldn't plan a primetime show like that around it. That Mexico is playing then is completely inconsequential. And even if it was the night before, they wouldn't spend much time on the women's soccer. Let NBCSN do that. NBC has bigger fish to fry than to spend time talking about soccer. I think you have to go back to 2004 to find the last time NBC proper showed an Olympic soccer match. In looking at the schedule, I think that will continue through this Olympics.

Yes, presumably what they actually mean is "an hour delay for NYC, four hours for LA ...."?
