Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

Get ready for "the most sophisticated and technologically forward-looking presentation NBC has ever done" with "added improved search and personalization features on its X1 platform for viewers", throwing everything at it. Does say NBC's family will have 11 networks confirmed in it (very likely NBC, NBCSN, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, USA, NBC Olympic Basketball and Soccer Channels, and I'm thinking Oxygen for English side and Telemundo and NBC Universo on the Spanish side. Wall Street Journal was the first to report that NBC Olympics will have 6000 hours of the Rio 2016 broadcast overall on TV and online/mobile with NBC producing 5500 of it, live and on-demand, in addition to 4500 hours online on its NBC Sports Live Extra mobile app and website through 40 simultaneous streaming channels, which will also be made available on in its X1 video service:

I actually think the 1,500 hours on TV is a decrease surprisingly from 4 years ago!

2012

NBC: 272.5

NBCSN: 292.5

MSNBC: 155.5

CNBC: 73

Bravo: 56

Telemundo: 173.5

Soccer+Basketball: 770

Total: 1793

Source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/27/nbc-london-olympics-2012-streaming-tv-3d/

Do we believe this 1500 includes the 300 announced from Golf including "Golf Central"?

It's tough to figure how they'll count the number of hours for Golf Channel. That's 300 hours of Olympic-related programming. 130 live hours only includes about 70 hours of actual competition.

Beginning to wonder if the soccer and basketball channels will be back. That they accounted for 770 hours of programming from London (and if that's true, that includes all of the encore presentations, which really inflates those numbers), so maybe they're just adjusting those numbers downward. I can't imagine we'd see that drastic a drop-off in the number of total hours, but if no specialty channels, not sure what would replace them.

D'oh! I completely forgot about the Golf Channel and its 300 hours (130 of them live) on my last post here and just did since last night! Allow me to amend that roster with the Golf Channel in replacing Oxygen in the 11 NBC family of Olympic networks. Should've realized that by now.

In a related note, the exact network breakdown of hours of everyone is still yet TBA. We do know the the aforementioned Golf Channel will have 300 hours and Telemundo and NBC Universo will conduct a combined 200, so that's obviously 500 right there out of the 1500 planned on the TV side, leaving an even 1000 for the rest. I do strongly believe the NBC Sports Network will get the majority of the hours overall of all, more so than NBC proper (will it ever reach the 200+ hour plateau by itself in its portion of the Olympic coverage?) outside of the Olympic Basketball and Soccer Channels being the hub of Team USA again like in London. If there's no news regarding virtual reality Olympic coverage from NBC by now from yesterday in Philadelphia, we're likely not gonna get it afterwards unlike the CBC. Could announce it as separate viewing hours later but...Here in the USA we certainly got the technology and the potential market for it (even bigger than Canada's). Thinking now VR's not going to be part of the plans.

It's certainly marked growth for Telemundo/NBC Universo since Athens. Since then the hours of coverage starting with that 169.5 hours of coverage back in with Athens 2004, then 130 hours in Beijing 2008 (did it have 380 hours overall online then too?), 173 for London four years ago to now finally hitting the 200+ hour plateau this year with Rio 2016. My guess is, in case you may not have seen what I wrote there, NBC Universo will handle the bulk of the extensive sports coverage with Telemundo handling both ceremonies and some sports like soccer along with daily highlights. Telemundo's boss Cesar Conde says there will be happy integration that will speak to its Hispanic fan base with the Olympics, now equipped with more coverage and more in-depth reporting than ever in its history inside a region of the world that complements a lots of what they do, and onto the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 World Cup as soccer being the bigger long-term priority:

Behind the scenes of (many but definitely not all) FranceTV Sport's Rio 2016 broadcasting team's photo shoot with the photos you see from the previous link starring (in order of appearance) Rai, Laure Manaudou, Bom Dia Rio trio of Mathieu Lartot, Laurent Luyat, and Cedric Beaudou, Fabien Galthie, Stade 2's Celine Geraud and Lionel Chamoulaud, Fabien Galthie, Jerome Alonzo, Marinette Pinchon, Stephane Diagana, Jan Van De Velde, Eric-Emmanuelle Schmitt, Jerome Fernandez, Valerie Nicholas, Clementine Sarlat, Elie Chouraqui, Lucie Décosse, and Sami El Guedarri:

TVes' Rio 2016 promo as the centerpiece of its "Golden Generation" programming this summer in Venezuela that includes London 2012 gold medalist epee fencer Ruben Limardo, its only medalist then, and OC flag bearer and table tennis player Fabiola Ramos, archer Elias Malave, swimmer Andreína Pinto (?), weightlifter Junior Sanchez, beach volleyball duo of Igor Hernández and Jesus Villafañe, all shown under the London segment. This marks TVes' third consecutive Summer Olympics broadcast since its controversial inception. Yeah, it'll be all live but doesn't say yet what the broadcasting will be like:

Unless there's an agreement we are not aware of right now, I think SBS will once again share its Rio 2016 coverage with rivals KBS and MBC. You may recall there's a tendency in South Korean Olympic coverage to share events going on at the same like with what happened in Sochi with the likes of speedskater Lee Sang Hwa and the short speed skating after clearing some of their schedule on short notice. However, KBS actually has its own golf channel, so perhaps we can safely assume it will have the entire tournaments there. SBS will still exclusively holds the coverage for both South and North Koreas while allowing the other TV networks in the south.

Just coming out hours ago that in Portugal, RTP will have RTP1 (aka Canal 1) to cover the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in a press presentation that also includes RTP's Euro 2016 coverage plans starring Portugal's megastar Cristiano Ronaldo. RTP's Rio 2016 emphasis is, taking a page from what the Mexican TV giants Televisa and TV Azteca used to do with the Olympics, on entertainment as Olympic Beach will dominate the mornings and afternoons set along Rio's beach like with other fellow broadcasters during August instead of Summer Total's daytime slot there Francisco Menezes, Vanessa Oliveira, António Raminhos, and Jani Gabriel will act as studio anchors or hosts:

Another reason why SKY Italia didn't want to deal with Rio 2016 even as a pay-TV subscription possibility and gave it all to RAI is this summer: it's terribly and heavily focused on Euro 2016 and Copa America soccer, which generates greater interest:

Flow Sports likes to notify those in the (predominently) English-speaking Commonwealth member Caribbean nations and territories that they are now no longer restricted to NBC's or for that matter BBC's Olympic productions this time around, telling them what to watch by the traditional broadcasters. Now they can watch whenever, whatever, and however with over 2000 hours live and in HD. Not to mention the US athletes' puff profiles. Flow says it bring forth more details soon with the #FlowToRio:

David Feherty, NBC's newest golf man, will utilize his television skills for not only golf but act as an Opening Ceremony reporter (to join Lauer, Veira, and Guthrie as the NBC team there) and will immerse in some Brazilian culture to present. Likely being in Chris Collingsworth's role back in Sochi 2014 at the Fisht Stadium:

Some additional--and more comprehensive--info regarding the Rio 2016 coverage from Radio-Canada, RDS, and RDS2 on the French-Canadian side than what we got from Radio-Canada's website which seems to boost them and less of RDS. RDS will simultaneously show both ceremonies with Radio-Canada. Not only with track and field, RDS will also showcase golf, tennis, basketball, soccer, rugby, volleyball, triathlon, road cycling, and boxing. What, no handball? Maybe later somewhere on the schedule plans. In any case, Canada's Olympic teams will be featured. Radio-Canada, meanwhile, will handle track and field, swimming and diving, gymnastics, rowing, and canoeing/kayaing. Contains the sportscasting teams for each sport. Or at least several of them:

Globo obviously got some serious programming adjustments with its massive, all day Rio 2016 host broadcasting coverage temporarily being in the way of its regular scheduled shows. Also, Globo promised earlier on of some tech innovations on Brazilian sports TV, like with the World Cup two years ago. Soccer is very much expected with virtual soccer and holographics and more options. That tactical table will further be used for basketball, handball, volleyball, swimming, and beach volleyball. A world first from Globo: mobile 4KIP technology through a partnership with Sony and Image and will be most promimently at Maracanzinho Gymnasium for volleyball.

In comparison to Globo/SporTV's, Band's and Record's coverage will be modest. In fact, Band and BandSports won't have its commentators and the rest of the staff at the soccer stadiums and instead call them at their Mourobi studios. But since changed its mind and have them at the more important games as a result to Brazil's crippling economic crisis:

Beijing 2008 100m gold medalist swimmer Alain Bernard joins Canal+ in swimming for Rio 2016 with his ex-coach Denis Augin with play-by-play guys Eric Besnard and Philippe Groussard. Plus, Stéphane Guy and Laura Flessel get to cohost the Opening Ceremony at Maracana Stadium. Canal+ will actually have 4 channels that will cover Rio 2016 with Canal + Sport covering soccer, rugby 7s, and golf with Infosport+ and iTV also getting involved. Other Canal + Olympic personnel will include Thierry Rey, Stéphane Caristan, and Jean Galfione. 60 reporters will be on hand there with 200 additional people based in Paris under François-Charles Bideaux. Also Canal+'s live sports coverage will come 13:15 to 5 in the morning with several presenter co-anchors throughout the day (Isabelle Ithurburu and Arnaud Bonnin at 13:15-18, Hervé Mathoux and Laurie Delhostal from 18 to midnight, Thomas Sénécal et Marina Lorenzo through the late night. Nicolas Tourriol et Virgine Ramel up to 5am). Announcers also were named for judo, basketball, handball, fencing, track and field, soccer, rugby, cycling, gymnastics, tennis, and canoeing/kayaking:

It looks like the four networks together will air 41 more hours than they did last time. And I think tennis will be exclusive to Bravo this time. So hopefully that means NBNCSN will gain 41 hours from rugby and additional coverage.

The large cuts to MSNBC makes sense since they'll already be getting higher than usual ratings from the presidential election. And it does appear there is an uptick in Breaking News stories. I'm also surprised to see CNBC is branching way outside of boxing.

Maybe so. But these days you can't expect Lauer, Veira, and Guthrie to be down at the Stadium ground level and report things; their job is to stay in the assigned position at least in the middle of the stadium. Maybe outside Maracana Stadium like Seven did for Beijing with McAvaney and Birch. Or emulate what the CBC did at Salt Lake City in mic up a few of the athletes when they march in. Not bad ideas. Carillo and Roberts will do more serious and informative ones. Feherty with his fan following brings the humour with his. Don't even want to know about Lipinski's and Weir's angle.

Dtd2, how many Team USA profile videos so far X1 has on demand because the full team in various sports is still fleshing itself out? Also, have you recorded them already?

OK, biggest news in Olympic media coverage today comes from Germany in ZDF's and ARD's expected mutual official announcement of their Rio 2016's coverage plans in Hamburg. Those two will once again alternate with a combined 280+ hours, 1000 hours of online Olympic content, 45 hours of Olympic summaries (add that to the sports hours, it's a combined 325 hours) with pledges towards a "subtle, journalistic reporting, diverse perspectives, and a live experience" and improved synergy. Both ZDF and ARD will share a panoramic studio inside the Olympic Park and make use of production and technology in common - from cutting rooms on the OBS van up to their own cameras. In addition, the collaboration comes again in the alternating sportscasting on online live and on-demand streams, just like with London 2012. These streaming channels will be up to 6 free parallel live online/app channels through TV Spielfilm (3 each for ZDF and ARD) that will provide an outlet to the less televised events on ZDF and Das Erste like judo, sailing, archery, and badminton. Even Hbb-TV Red Button. ZDF will have ZDF Olympia live, co-moderated by Katrin Müller-Hohenstein and Rudi Cerne, offering the eight days of competition from 1 to 5:30pm (MET) in the full sports experience. "Olympia Extra", presented by Sven Voss, comes on at 9am to 12pm featuring the events from the previous night with an increased volume compared to London 2012. Extensive live coverage on the First - moderated alternately by Alexander Bommes and Gerhard Delling - is supplemented by summaries, studio guests and critical and entertaining background reporting. Olympic Telegram for the viewer remains in the First-to-date keeping in the focus of attention back at the Olympics and the sports that otherwise get less attention. Only Tagesschau will interrupt the coverage on ARD but briefly. Presenter duo Jessy Wellmer (RBB) and Michael Antwerpes (SWR) host a daily 3-hour Olympic morning breakfast highlights program--weekdays at 9am and on Sundays at 7am--that moves between pure sports coverage and light entertainment while bringing the main events and medal decisions from last night, an hourly "Olympia" telegram, beach interviews, reactions from the net and the home - all that and more awaits viewers in Germany for best breakfast time. Bommes, Delling, Wellmer, and Antwerpes are known as the four Muskateers. ARD will also have Franziska Van Almsick, Daniela Mercury, Julius Brink, and Frank Busmann. Both will have the same combined team amount like it was from London 2012.

ZDF's Rio 2016 Olympic coverage comes in August 4 on 20:15 (8:25pm) with an Olympic countdown and the documentary The Brazilian Patient - Olympic Country In Crisis hosted by ZDF South America correspondent Andreas Wunn followed by live men's soccer group play with Germany vs. defending gold medalists Mexico at 22:00 (10pm). ARD's coverage starts on August 3 with the German Frauenfussball at the legendary Maracana Stadium in German prime time against Zimbabwe and will handle the Opening Ceremony live on August 5. ZDF will take care of the Closing. Notable event highlights on ARD's days of coverage include the men's cycling road race, the men's 100m final, the men's soccer gold medal final, and the 200m freestyle possibly starring Paul Biedermann. Das Erste will come around 23:40-17 (11:40am-5pm) during their programming. Online on both sites will present reports, pictures gallery, and reports from the online reporters in Brazil the current coverage of the competitions in Rio. On the radio side, ARD will have daily 24 hours of Rio 2016 coverage in-depth covering almost 40 different sports to 25 million Germans daily including reports, interviews, news and exciting stories (why can't Westwood One Sports be like that with theirs?). Furthermore, ZDF and Das Erste will follow CBC's lead in Canada in offering 360 VR Olympic coverage in Rio De Janeiro. But doesn't say how many hours as of yet:

Now NBC tries to upstage ZDF and ARD. We know about the Golf Channel's 300 hours and Telemundo/NBC Universo's 200 hours of the 1500 TV hours. Now NBC Olympics announces this afternoon Bravo (94.5 hours of tennis, mostly 12 hours for first 5 days), MSNBC (78.5 hours in men's basketball, beach volleyball, rugby, soccer, volleyball and water polo--Most of the programing will air from 11-4 pm), CNBC (42 hours, mostly from 4-7 pm CDT--elimination-round basketball and volleyball, along with archery, beach volleyball, cycling, rugby, water polo and wrestling) and USA returning since 2008 (110.5 hours of women's soccer two days before the opening ceremony, then will show coverage from 8am-4pm CDT on weekdays along with weekend programming starring men's basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, rowing, synchronized swimming, volleyball and water polo):

Apologies for the NBC news redundancy. Makes sense with the high profile presidential campaign and the conventions coming up this summer in the reduction of TV hours on MSNBC. Confident for sure. Glad to see USA back as I expected that network would be and share in the burden. Now I'm starting to question if we may end up having those NBC Olympic Basketball and Soccer Channels. Hope not. All this surely means once again just by tabulation NBC Sports Network will get the lion's share of the cable Olympic hours on the Olympic side not named the Golf Channel as the showcase one. Thinking NBC proper will go 200+ hours again with maybe NBCSN going 320+ acting again as the hub for Team USA, assuming no Olympic channels like with Beijing and London. Hopefully, I'll be wrong.

RED Mexico expands the reach of the 2016 Summer Olympic TV broadcast from its 41 regional public, cultural, artistic, and educational Mexican TV channels throughout the nation. Interesting and surprising how Televisa and TV Azteca don't have that all over nationwide transmission despite being Mexican commercial media giants:

The time doesn't matter - we'll still get the OC live. Even in Vancouver, we got the OC live, despite it starting at 2am. Only about 8 people probably watched it, but we still got it live - I honestly don't know how you in the States roll over & take it

It looks like the four networks together will air 41 more hours than they did last time. And I think tennis will be exclusive to Bravo this time. So hopefully that means NBNCSN will gain 41 hours from rugby and additional coverage.

The extra hours are all coming from tennis as Bravo is now covering the entire tournament through the weekend where last time around, NBC and NBCSN had picked up the weekend coverage. Not sure that necessarily means an extra 41 hours from NBC/NBCSN. Worth noting that if you compare the number of hours on MSNBC and CNBC from London to the number of hours on MSNBC/CNBC/USA in Rio, the number is almost the same. Hopefully they don't cut back on the NBC or NBCSN hours.

The large cuts to MSNBC makes sense since they'll already be getting higher than usual ratings from the presidential election. And it does appear there is an uptick in Breaking News stories. I'm also surprised to see CNBC is branching way outside of boxing.

The Olympics are always in an election year, so MSNBC rarely has Olympic coverage later than 5pm. So too is the case here. It is interesting that CNBC won't be showing boxing. I'm wondering where all that coverage is headed.

I was wondering the same. After what happened in London, I wonder if NBC has just decided to give up on boxing and will show most of it online except for maybe the medal bouts. I can't imagine that NBCSN will devote a significant number of hours to boxing, unless they show it on tape during late night hours.

I think NBC's schedule will look very similar to their 2012 schedule. 10am-5pm, 8pm-midnight, 12:30am-1:30 or 2:00am on the weekdays, with something like 9am-6pm for the weekend daytime hours. NBCSN will probably do 7am-8pm every day, with perhaps some sort of late night/overnight window. I doubt NBCSN will have any overlap with the NBC primetime broadcast.

NBC's weekend windows will depend on what the events are that day, not unlike London. But yes, 9am-6pm sounds about right.

As for NBCSN.. I can almost assure you they'll overlap with NBC primetime. NBC put out a press release about a month ago..

NBC SPORTS GROUP AND CRACKLE TO BRING SPORTS JEOPARDY! WITH DAN PATRICK TO NBCSN BEGINNING AUGUST 6

It's hinted in that article that NBCSN coverage will go until Midnight. So if it's the local time equivalent of London, I think we're looking at 8am-Midnight for NBCSN.

Bit of a shame NBC apparently doesn't seem committed to Olympic boxing this time around as an Olympic TV programming staple, even with the prospect of pros allowed in. Perhaps there's this sense of little strength and faith in American boxers with this crop to be medal contenders, men and women alike, after the disappointing London campaign. Me too in not seeing NBCSN handling boxing and thus relegate much of it online. Agreed that NBC will very similiarly follow the London 2012 schedule blocks--on weekends I doubt some space could be allowed for the required E/I programming on Saturdays, depending on the events NBC would like to cover and be excused. Based on the potential weekend scheduling, Olympic coverage would immediately follow NBC Today Saturday's two hours. Come to think of it, Today generally could count as E/I.

Was wondering about the SevenWest Media's Olympic radio coverage down in Australia for a while. Now we got our answer with Southern Cross Radio Austereo acquiring the FM rights up to 2020 for A$160 million across its 78 stations in Australia. Triple M will be involved with news of a digital Olympic radio channel 7 Rio Live in the works for live radio audio simulcasting. ABC Radio and Macquarie Radio (owners of Sydney's 2GB and Melbourne's 3AW) are working on the AM rights side:
