Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

Recommended Posts

That's really the exact same one from months ago when first promoting the Golden Team on Globo/SporTV, only with the scene of Gustavo Kuerten's photo and his tennis admirer practicing added on since Guga's joining Time Ouro.

Missed out on the NBC Today show on the one-year countdown on TV this morning. Surely I'll catch up with clips later.

NBC surely is going all out on the Rio 2016 Olympics now, especially with the far more favorable time zone differences from Rio De Janeiro to the US east coast. NBC is aiming for over $1 billion in ad sales for its Rio 2016 coverage, something only the Super Bowl can match here on US TV, with a far more expansive coverage platforms like in the increasingly stronger digital realm it can sell and with numerous Olympic sponsors confidently all in on this, like from auto companies, insurance company, packaged good, movie studios, and the traditional Olympic sponsors. Even Madison Avenue seems to be more gung ho about it than the Super Bowl. It's expected to have better early sales than four years ago in London with that slow start:

Been a while since we were talking about Sweden's Viasat's OS Rio 2016 coverage developments. We got former Sweden national soccer team coach Lars Lagerbeck and Glenn Stromberg already in. We already know Carolina Kluft, Ola Wenstrom, Niklas Jihde, and Frida Norstrand will all be in the Viasat studios down in Rio. But now, we just got word today that ex-wrestler Martin Lidberg joins the Viasat 2016 Olympic broadcast team being at the wrestling venue and in the studio for the since-revamped sport as its analyst (or expert, as they say there in Sweden):

5600 video hours of Olympic broadcast viewing (in a combo of TV and online/mobile) will be consumed plus 25,100 media professionals will be on hand there to cover it next year from Rio De Janeiro as noted by RTE with its by-the-numbers countdown:

Australians, get ready for the Seven Network to unleash the biggest and most comprehensive live coverage of the Summer Olympics free-to-air in Australian TV history with over 900 hours on all Seven's three channels combined next year upon its return to Olympic broadcasting. 7mate will focus on men-oriented sports like golf and soccer with 7Two showcasing sports with strong women's appeal like gymnastics and equestrian as 7's main channel will tend towards the ceremonies, swimming, track & field, rowing, some basketball, and various other sports. Plus, there will be a 24/7 digital channel, on-demand service (both video and subscription), and a free app with 36 streams that can total between 2500-3000 hours, including the aforementioned 900+ hours, the Olympic news channel, and more. To mollify advertiser's sales fears during the three week Olympic marketing blitz and preserve the old-fashioned way of watching down there, 7 is booking fewer commercials, so far only global and national Australian Olympic sponsors but will extend later, and reducing them by 30% for better impact and less cluttered enviroment. There will be a subscription app with prices TBD:

After several Summer Olympics being in non-favorable time zones, NBC has to be thrilled of getting one that is with Rio De Janeiro. And that means more, much more, live coverage. But that means it will have to minimize those packaged sports coverages and with that familar structure (like those featurettes with slickly-produced music and tears and the Bob Costas welcome with that easily digestible packaging of primetime sports) when it does that successful delayed coverage (still will be present). Now the pace will be faster and choppier in Rio from the start, which makes it exciting even with the potential delays and breaking news. Swimming and track will undoubtably go live and unpolished. Except for gymnastics due to the sport's structural reasons incompatible to US TV's broadcasting structure (still live online/mobile with options of viewing). Still, the overall focus will be on U-S-A! U-S-A! and viewers will watch to see how they fare:

Some of the US athletes who NBC sees gold in their Rio futures. Mind you, always allows luck into the picture before and during:

Should be safe to assume that Laure Manadou will be the analyst for France Television in Olympic swimming down in Rio--she was just there for the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia:

Ugh, really wish this wasn't true, but it's an NBC press release, so it's not like it can be disputed..

RYAN SEACREST NAMED LATE NIGHT HOST FOR NBC’S RIO OLYMPICS COVERAGE

Oh well. Not like I watch that crap anyways. I watch the Olympics for the sports and the ceremonies. I don't give a rats ass what the "experts" had to say about anything. I especially loathed that obnoxious twat Johnny Weir and his rat sidekick Tara Lipinski whenever they came on during the Sochi games. If I could avoid them, I did.

I know, right? To be fair to Seacrest, he has done Olympic pieces with US athletes during the NBC London coverage, where he made sense because of the tremendous British music artists and pop icons the nation produces over the decades. Especially during the Closing Ceremony. But as a late night host? I don't know. The only thing he could do, I hope, is educate many in the American public about the MPB artists. Also, his OC studio interview with Michael Phelps should NOT be placed nor emulated again for Rio during that and eliminate the coverage of the sobering Abide Be Me portion. Better brush up on his knowledge of the sports that will be featured during that slot.

On a modest related side note, if I can call it that, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan visited American Idol and presented him with US soccer jersey on stage in the leadup the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada a few months back and jokingly hope he would be their waterboy. There's also a Fox coverage tie-in somewhere with this. Why?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5EPOPyImTg

Enough of Seacrest! Let's move on to Spain's TVE and its planned spending of 56 million euros for Rio 2016, including an extra 50 million, out of the 974 million euros allocated to RTVE, in keeping with its policy of containment, from the State Budget 2016 with some emphasis towards digital media, formatizing, and equipment. But are the costs realistic for Rio?

NZ Olympic media news at this point of the one-year mark is scarce right now as far as Sky Sport NZ/Prime is concerned. But the NZOC released a brief video last week calling Kiwis to be the inspiration for its NZ athletes in Rio next year at this mark. Plus at this very time, there was New Zealand Olympic gala dinner at Auckland's Viaduct Event Centre with some of its athletes with aims for 200+ Olympians bound for Rio, its biggest ever:

Sky Sport NZ/Prime coverage and buildup is very disappointing so far. Their website is a dog as well. Sky Sport NZ really need to do more, but it was the same in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. They havent really learnt.

Hate to tell you this, but putting Ryan Seacrest on late night might mean less coverage of the sports and the ceremonies. Because he might be there to sample the local scene and tell us what's trending on social media. At least with Mary Carillo, there may be features and other nonsense, but it would be related to the Olympics and to the athletes.

And get ready for more Weir and Lipinski come 2018. They're the new figure skating commentary team going forward.

I was looking at information about NBC's coverage of the IAAF Worlds and noticed that Dwight Stones was not part of the commentary team. Todd Harris (who has no track and field background that I'm aware of) is now the reporter for the field event. According to some of Dwight's tweets, it does not appear that leaving NBC was his choice--it sounds like he was told by NBC that he has "aged out" (even though he's only in his early-60s). Dwight has covered track and field at every Olympics since 1984 and is one of the most knowledgable people about all aspects of the sport. It's very disappointing that NBC feels he no longer adds value to their coverage. He'll be missed.

Dwight tweeting the following on July 24th:

Dwight Stones @DwightStones Jul 24

@sluggahjells @TimHutchings1 You are too kind. However, I've been replaced on NBC. Field will get little love. I've aged out apparently.

https://twitter.com/DwightStones/with_replies

He made a few comments about it to people who tweeted him during the National Championships as well. He's still working for ESPN.

I meant to add to the above--if he was told by NBC that he has "aged out," I find it interesting that Craig Masback is still part of the commentary team given that he's almost the same age as Dwight.

To me, this will be troubling about NBC's Rio 2016 coverage towards the field events if Stones is proven right. Never mind the fact those are going to be live with a favorable time zone with no highlights packaging. Focus will always be on the track side of things during NBC's broadcasts regardless. Shame he's no longer going to do it with NBC. Never mind the fact the USA has sometimes surprises itself in them in recent Olympics. If former US Track And Field President Craig Masback is kept, maybe he could do it. Was it NBC thinking of keeping one and not the other? Who's groomed younger people who can be just as insightful and knowledgable in them to step right in?

SporTV2 premiered Missao Rio 2016 (Mission Rio 2016) Thursday right from Maracana Stadium with a focus on the Olympic history, Brazilian athletes, will recall some brands, info on the presentation and preparation of Rio De Janeiro and not just the Brazilian athletes, and a look back on the London medal table:

SporTV's 16 HD Olympic channels will have some of them actually being from their pay-per-view Premiere FC channels used for Brasileirao soccer games. Online, Globo promises 56 Internet streams for the Rio 2016 Olympics on its website, showing everything. Also, Globo and Band got together for the exclusive cable rights (as well as mobile and Internet rights) back in 2009 and both sublicensed them to FOX Sports Brasil and ESPN Brasil, though in the former had something associated with the Libertardores Cup soccer. Only broadcast TV is not as exclusive down there:

Caribbean Broadcasting Union members are growing concerned over the quality of the 12 feeds the broadcasters will get with worries of breaching and of the advertisers' role in this next year in Rio as part of the terms of agreement:

The number of different broadcasters in Brazil is confusing, can someone do a recap?

Globo Group: Globo Network + 16 SporTV channels

Band Group: Band Network + Band Sports

Record Group : Record Network + Record News

ESPN + ESPN Brasil

Fox Sports + Fox Sports 2

The ones in bold are free-air channels

You'd think so with the Rio and Sugar Loaf skyline in the background. Looks promising. Does have elements from past sets like the fireplace onto the side perhaps with an outdoor patio area. I wonder with this was inspired by ESPN's FIFA World Cup set, also in Rio, that had an outdoor like balcony at the studipo set with the beautiful nighttime setting. Since I'm seeing this, it would make sense for it to be more with a laid back vibe for those segments. How about a barbeque grill too. If Seacrest uses it for the late night segment, I would expect the relaxing/casual vibe to be even more so.

Sorry--I should have said that McKay was 66 at his last Olympics as primetime anchor. I'm well aware that he was part of NBC's coverage in 2002. If you read my post above, I said there was no guarantee that McKay would have continued as anchor past 1988, not that he wouldn't have done another Olympics altogether. Considering that there was talk in 1984 that LA might be McKay's last Olympics as primetime anchor (this was discussed in SI's lengthy article on him in the LA preview issue), I think we would have seen Brent Musberger as anchor if ABC had televised an Olympics in the 90s, with McKay in a contributing role. By the early-90s, McKay had scaled back his schedule considerably and was mainly doing horse racing, golf, and a few other select events. At some point, I can see Costas transitioning to a role similar to the one McKay had in 2002.

ABC also had enough capbale venue announcers fro either 92 or 96 but i wonder about 2000(since it would have conflcted with college football) my guess is that ABC would have kept Keith Jackson on CFB and had Musburger hositng the Olympics(but they had Sean Grande and a few others to fill in on CFB and they could have used a few guys from ESPN too to fill in) they also had Charlie Jones too(he had went to ABC in 99)

College football? How about Monday Night Football. NBC was in a good position to bid for the 2000 Olympics because they had no NFL commitments then (we saw how awkward that got in 1988 with Seoul). That's a big crew and a couple of big name announcers ABC/ESPN would have had to deal with, to say nothing of the very obvious scheduling conflict they probably would not have wanted to deal with.

i know that in 84 ABC got some criticism for scheduling events around their soap operas as well as the local news(the gymnastics team finals and some of the swimming events if i remember correctly) is there a issue next year with NBC having the swimming finals so late? i know it is because of the soaps in the host country(kind of what happened here in 84)

but I am saying what if ABC didn't have MNF though? with CFB they could have used some of the ESPN people for the college telecasts..
