Rio 2016 Olympic Media Update

It's too soon to think about the NBC Rio 2016 logo; they're focusing on the Super Bowl broadcast this year right now! On the other hand, NBC Universal surely is planning and mulling over on a design for the logo as we speak with possibly the 3D Sugar Loaf Mountain and Christ The Redeemer statue. But that could be cliched for some. It might get unveiled on Super Bowl Sunday. Seems a good time to get people's attention. But again I ultimately think it's too early right now. Check back sometime in the summer like around the one-year mark.

Ya know what though.. this is by far the biggest showcase event for NBC before the Olympics next summer. I don't know if we'll see a logo revealed or anything of the like, but considered Bob Costas will be your host next Sunday (and it certainly doesn't hurt matters that 1 of the teams playing in the game is based in near the US candidate for the 2024 Olympics), I have a feeling we'll be seeing an Olympic promo or 2 aired during the day.

I remember the London 2012 logo was revealed during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade of 2011 with the Sochi logo being unveiled at the end of the 2012 Games.

A new Rio 2016 Olympic promo, I can certainly expect because as you say this is the biggest TV sports showcase event for NBC until Rio that will certainly catch hundreds of millions' attention, that's for the commercials too, and get American minds marinated for it. Don't forget though in a related story, Super Sunday will also be the day Mun2 becomes NBC Universo, the home of the Spanish language US Olympic TV broadcast for Rio--and this year's US Spanish Super Bowl coverage.

The Seven Network in Australia gives us a glimpse of what the TV broadcasting structure would be like for its Rio De Janiero 2016 coverage through its digital channels 7 and 7 TWO through its Australian Open coverage from Melbourne acting as a prelude. I would expect another of 7's digital channels, 7Mate, to take up the Games as well and/or devise Olympic-specific channels like Ten did for Sochi 2014 and allow live and on-demand streaming through TENPlay online and on mobile devices (PLUS7 can also be accessed as a streaming app through the Sony PS3 and PS4 and maybe XBOX One). Does also say its Rio promotional campaign will start with a marketing plan within two months--and with plans for multilingual coverage as an option, an Australian Olympic TV first:

Been visiting the Super Bowl commercials webpages over the weekend. None of them say anything regarding so far of NBC taking up a promo spot to promote its upcoming Rio De Janiero 2016 Summer Olympics coverage with all the commercials forthcoming.

There's a webpage that says when NBC might run a promo spot to promote the Olympics?

Doesn't say at all that NBC plans for a Rio Olympics promo (like when CTV/TSN/RDS did in Canada when its restarted its Believe campaign for London 2012 on its Super Bowl coverage that year). Hoped there was by this. Still could happen. Though there are a couple of websites devoted to Super Bowl commercials like http://www.superbowl-commercials.org/. Maybe it's because as the broadcast rights holder this year, websites like them skip network programming promos advertising altogether.

But I can tell you that NBC Sports will have Bob Costas interview IOC President Thomas Bach one-on-one as part of NBC's ten hours of its Super Bowl Sunday Super Bowl XLIX coverage:

Odd, what is he doing there?

Beats me. NBC had advertised that he would be interviewed by Costas during the pregame, but I figured that would have happened at another place and time. Wonder if he came there for NBC or would have been there anyway and NBC just wanted to seize the opportunity to talk to him.

yea I too expected an interview like that to take place somewhere else. I wouldn't think that he'd want to be there during Super Bowl week. UNLESS he's secretly a huge American football fan??? Or was invited by some top-tier people in the NFL.

He was invited by someone, but it doesn't seem like anyone knows who. Either way he's going to be at the game itself.

The article mentions he's staying at the NBC hotel, so that gives me a pretty good indication what the answer to who invited him.

Definitely Comcast/NBC Universal had to have paid for all of Bach's expenses to get to the Phoenix area. I'm also very sure he was curious about those Super Bowls that we Americans make grand events of, to say nothing of Canada's Grey Cups, that he heard so much about and learn from.

I guess with the NBC's new Rio logo, NBC Sports and its branding firm it worked with thought of using the Sugar Loaf Mountain but very likely wanted to avoid giving offense of using the image of Christ The Redeemer for commercial purposes to Americans Christians like the more conservative segments. Kinda does look like some those Rio pebble-like (or guitar pick, if you prefer) graphics and typography we're seeing the last year and half with usage of the Brazilian flag colors--mostly green, very likely to symbolize the Amazon forest.

Goran Zachrisson--"Zacke"--will cover the Olympic golf scene filled with 60 men and 60 women in Rio De Janeiro for Sweden's Viasat and surely TV3 and TV10 with Sweden surely a part of this and fielding a solid team. Surely we'll see him help cover both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at Maracana Stadium like he did at Sochi:
http://www.golf.se/folja/nyheter/2015/1/zacke-blir-os-kommentator/

Since we're talking about Viasat Sweden, perhaps we'll all of the Modern Times Group/Viasat FTA channels will have at least some share of the Swedish Olympic TV coverage in Rio with so many events and hours to do this with obviously than in Sochi. So it would stand to reason that TV3 and TV10 would have some company this time with perhaps TV8 and TV6 showing several hours each without oversaturating Swedish viewers with the Olympics and keep the former two as the Swedish FTA Olympic TV channels. All still very early though...

In the interim Viasat HD 16 will be the Swedish place for Olympic-related news, reports, magazine news, and past Olympic highlights and classic moments. All in the leadup to Rio De Janeiro:

ESPN Brasil finalizes its guarantee agreement with the IOC to cover the Rio De Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics on the pay-TV side along with SporTV and BandSports:

Showing you clips from the London 2012 Opening Ceremony as proof it will cover the Rio De Janeiro 2016 Olympics US Spanish-language coverage, mun2 made its rebranding transition to NBC Universo this past Super Sunday with this network promo:

For those who have not seen the slick, new, and well-made NBC Rio 2016 sizzle reel promo with the NBC Rio 2016 logo (starting with Katie Ledecky at the pool) that was revealed during NBC's coverage of Super Bowl 49, here it is. Logo is growing on me with a nice, clean look that has Brazil's colors and will be used well for the upcoming broadcast and would offer a glimpse of what NBC's Rio graphics could look like. Like to know who the single Brazil narrator voice is. Obviously, this is just the beginning:

NBC, NBC Sports Network, and Universal Sports were all involved in following USA Eagles Rugby Sevens qualifying exploits in Las Vegas at the USA Sevens Rugby Invitational en route to defending their Olympic gold from way back in Paris at Rio with 20 hours of coverage this past weekend:

Madrid-based OBS has no plans to utilize 4KTV Ultra for Rio De Janeiro next year because presently there's no demand from the broadcasters for its content, richer streaming video opportunities on the mobile side of things, and many nations worldwide are just now readying access to 4KTV while still established towards HDTV. But that won't stop Japan's NHK from further experimenting with 8K, starting with Sochi 2014 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, in Rio to ultimately with full regular usage in Tokyo by 2020--and working with OBS there in filming the footage not for broadcast coverage:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/behind-screen/4k-ultra-hd-tv-broadcasting-774745

We're getting more details about how the FTA Brazilian broadcasters Globo, Record, and Band will handle and structure the Olympic coverage: all three of them will utilize the same OBS feed and images with only differences coming from the background, interviews, debates, etc. Furthermore, Record TV and Bandeirantes TV will cover more sports than Globo TV will. Globo TV will have the bigger sports: soccer (the videos it will produce for the IOC world feed), volleyball, basketball, tennis, beach volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, and track and field:

Globo TV and its sister all-sports channels SporTV reveal more of their Rio De Janiero 2016 Olympic broadcasting plans in announcing on Thursday that it will, naturally, take some elements from its coverage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup also in Brazil. Headlined by Globo and SporTV having its own headquarters located at the heart of the Rio Olympic Park just like the BBC did at London, where they will conduct all of its Olympic and Paralympic-related programming including its own regular programming. They will employ all of the latest tech innovations for Brazilian TV like what we saw

out of them from the World Cup and will reprise that not just for soccer but also for volleyball (both kinds), swimming, basketball, track and field, and maybe even handball and even cover all 45 of the test events starting August 2.

It will also cover the Olympic Torch relay from Olympia to all 250 of the Brazilian cities, culminating at the Opening Ceremonies. It will also plan for 16 docs devoted to that same number of athletes (likely all Brazilians to raise their awareness to the Brazilian public). On the Globo side, it will broadcast 160 hours with 110 of them live as we know SporTV will have 18 channels for more comprehensive wall-to-wall coverage. And it looks as though Globo/SporTV will have Caio Ribeiro, Walter Casagrande, Juninho Pernambucano, and Júnior to cover the soccer as analysts:

http://boainformacao.com.br/2015/02/globo-inicia-cobertura-dos-jogos-olimpicos-de-2016-no-proximo-domingo/

Thomas Bach pays a visit to SporTV for an interview:

NBC will broadcast the 7th Ryder Cup-style Duel In The Pool between Team USA and European All-stars on tape delay on December 19 that will take place December 11-12 in Indianapolis:
