The 21st Century

300px-NASA-Apollo8-Dec24-Earthrise.jpg

The Earthrise, maybe the most significant picture of 20th century. What pic will be the 21st Century one?

I've been googling about US debt crisis and European countries troubles and got many predictions and bets on if US will fade as superpower and who could be the new superpower(s) of the 21st century.

I think it's a nice and why not very funny futurology exercise and I'd like to share and see opinions about what will happen to the planet in the next decades. (Can be in sports, economy, space race, wars)

Any thoughts? :)

First, I don`t think US will fade out as a Superpower. I do believe, they will have a decadent period (already happening), but they will stay in the position of peacekeepers of the world and the big brother in the 21st Century.

But it will be a more multi-polar world, specially economically, with China being the biggest GDP around 2050 decade.

I do believe in a new space race, but this time the battle would be between USA-Russia vs. China to see who will be the first to send a manned ship to Mars.

I don't believe we will see a World War, at least in the next decades. Well, there are still very crazy man ruling countries like North Korea and Iran, but I think they are not crazy enough to battle the rest of the world.

And finally I'm hopefull about mankind reaching the cure of cancer in 21st century. It would be a great advance for medicine and also for future crazy-space tralvels.

I don't think so, Danny. There are over 120 kinds of known cancers. You have to understand is that with cancer, certain cells just go haywire. I believe this is just nature's course. We all can't hang around this planet forever. So even for people who have lived to over 100, something's got to get them. Cancer can be arrested and delayed; OK, sometimes licked -- but something else will get you anyway. It's NOT like we are destined to hang around this planet forever. I see it as one of nature's natural "levellers," just like war, pestilence, natural disasters, etc. Even animals, if they don't fall prey to other predators, eventually succumb to disease including their own forms of cancer.

As for idiotic space travel. What a waste of money. All those billions just spent for some otherwordly photos and velcro zippers, prepackaged food, etc. Big FVCKING DEAL!! I mean all these "space" scientists should just go live on the moon or elsewhere if they're so obsessed with all those extraterrestrial bodies. I'd rather my taxes to some mundane objectives rather than this travelling in a vacuum thing. If God meant for us to live in "space," he would've put us there. There's a reason there's NO OXYGEN THERE. DUH!! It's one of the BIGGEST hoaxes of the 20th or any other century.

In a overall I'm pretty excited mankind can be better in this century.

I agree in part with your points, Baron, maybe I'm too optimistic, but why not believe things can be better?smile.gif

About oil, I'm pretty sure 21st century will be last one we will use fossile fueling as main option.

well for me the most impressive invention of the 21th century is inside of everything on world...DNA...so...

dna_telomerase.jpg

its that much important cause leads to nanotech, evolution steps, healthcare, everything changed with molecular biology...

DNA wasn't invented but discovered, and it was discovered in the 19th century. The structure and function was elucidated in the 20th century.

Dec 12, 2012!

Heck if mother nature or the Mayan gods don't finish us off, maybe we will do it to our selves. With the stuff that's going on in the world, it appears we're like a powder keg ready to go off.

And about economics and politics, how do you guy see this century?

First woman and first latin US president will happen in the next decades?

Will China became the new USSR and world can be bipolar again?

DNA wasn't invented but discovered, and it was discovered in the 19th century. The structure and function was elucidated in the 20th century.

But how to use DNA for nano-engineering and even computing seems to be an achievement we will reach in this century.

Either Jennifer Lopez or Jessica Alba. Who will be Republican or Democract??

The only chance of a woman or a latin to get the presidency is an election between two latin ladies?

Well, it'd be funny about the videoclipes for jingles... in Spanish. cool.gif

Mineral Oil will no longer be a main source of fuel by 2050.

Mars will be reached by a USA lead global alliance and an orbital station built above it. The Moon will be little more than a reserch outpost and liftoff point for Mars.

Drinking Water will be why regional war will take place. The mission to Mars will be the reason for this - to find water.

An unknown and undecipherable message is picked up on a very high bandwave by the mega radio-telescope that was built in the southern african desert.

Ionic propulsion will be invented to allow manned exploration to the Gas Giants.

India will become the worlds medical hospital...An irony as it will still have abject poverty to deal with.

Cancer will be controlled...if not eradicated.

China will be the largest economy and an equal military power to the USA and Russia. Military tensions between China and Russia will be of serious concern.

The Commonwealth will fade into history,- Australia, Canada and New Zealand will become republics. Quebec will attempt to become a nation but be stymed by an angry Canada and the USA. France will attempt to intervene but Germany will reign them in as Europe's chief superpower. However they will be given Homerule.

2076 will see the beginning of the end for the USA. Breaking up with California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada forming a new country. Hawaii will align with the new 'Rio California'.

The Olympic Games will soldier on!...

Love all predictions!!!

I will make my owns:

  • The economy axis will change completely and the now emerging countries will be the ones along USA, England and Germany (Euro zone will fade in future). The G-10 (the Group of 10 most rich nations of the world) will be China, USA, India, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Indonesia, Japan, UK and Germany).
  • USA and China will be the two military superpowers and some kind of "light" Cold War will happen.
  • Communist countries will disappear. A new kind of techno-democracy will rise.
  • Dollar will be not the international currency anymore. A international one will replace it with a very "optimistic name" like Hope, Peace, Humanity...
  • Solar-based energies will be ordinary.
  • Internet will become obsolet as we know it. A kind of online 3D space with skin sensibility will replace it.
  • A company or someone very rich will buy a tiny country.
  • Calligraphy and handwriting will become an "artistic technique".
  • Manned mission will be sent to Mars late 21st Century by Americans and Russians. Few years later Chinese will send their mission with even more sucess.
  • The first clear evidence of simple life outside Earth will be found.
  • Cure for some kinds of cancer (if not a way to have total control of cells) will be found. A new disease will kill a small part of Earth population, but in 2 years, the cure for it will be find.
  • A brillant scientist will discover something we now can't even imagine.
  • A huge natural catastrophe will happen in some dense populated area and finally mankind will start to really fear the nature.
  • Africa will host their first Olympic Games before 2050.
  • No World War will be held in this century.
  • A totally new rhythm for music will rock the world and change the society.
  • First merge of countries will happen in name of economic prosperity, specially in Southern Europe.
  • Israel and Palestines will not find a solution for their conflict by the end of the century... the 26th one.
  • Religion will lose importance
  • By the end of the 21st Century a human will reach 160 years of life.
  • And finally in the FIFA World Cup Trinidad & Tobago 2098, Brazil will win its 19th World Championship!!! :D

I watched a report few weeks ago and a guy said the first human to live 150 years is already between us, probably born in the 70s and this person will be watching the entrance of 22nd Century.

Really amazing for this person.

About movies and stuff, it's pretty interesting to watch Stanley Kubric's 2001 and see who people in the late 60s thought the 21st century would be.

He couldn't be more wrong about manned flights to space, but at the same time, he made a nice work considering the visual effects from that time. :)

2001 is one of my favourite movies of all time. I am a great Sci-fi buff. At the time it was made in 1968, space travel was a hot topic and the race to land a man on the Moon was only a year away. After that,it was presumed by men like Arthur C Clarke (the author of 2001) and Stanley Kubrick and many others that space travel would advance by leaps and bounds once the first Moon landing had been made. Sadly, they did not forsee that Space exploration would soon be cut back by budget cuts and a loss of interest from the US government!

'2001' the movie remains a fascinating and poignant depiction of what might have been if Man's interest in space exploration had survived the initial Moon landings!

I love 2001!!! It's a masterpiece movie in my opinion.

When I said Kubric was wrong about manned travels to space is in the context of this thread. He was a genious and back to 1968, 1969, the movie was so in-sync with wishes and dreams of that generation.

We don't know how future will be. Maybe in 30 years a space travel to Mars be something so cheap that even middle class people could pay it. blink.gif

That's my point: how we imagine the future and how much will we be wrong? (a bit philosophical... lol) cool.gif
