The Look of the games

The look is certainly distinct and perhaps will work well as sporting backdrops. But I just feel something is lacking -- it's like graphically, it's a bit cheap or kiddy.

I'm not sure it has the right tone to it for the Olympic games.

Underwhelmed - nothing as exciting as the original brand & looks cheap -IMO!

Since its conception, the brand has been continuously diluted in its scope and ambition. I think the original backlash to the logo and 'epileptic inducing' brand launch video scared them all!

This brand almost looks like it would be better for a Commonwealth games -- it's not got that sense of occasion and importance or sense of gravitas which I personally think is right for an Olympic games.

Love the pictogram branded banners, looking really funky. And this is where having a second set of pictograms for this purpose comes into its own.

As for the "plain" banners individually they're ok, but I suspect the effect of lining a street with dozens of them in different colours are where they'll properly come to life.

I could look at one of Vancouver's artful banners for a while because they're so detailed and beautiful, but I'd imagine the cumulative effect of London's across a whole street would have more impact than lots of white and green banners. I think London has gone for a more holistic approach to its city dressing in this sense.

I note from the pdfs DarJoLe posted last week there are to be certain areas in the West End very heavily dressed and special routes or walks planned too.

Nice post. I do think the pictograms are the best part of the look and I agree that it will probably read better from a distance. I think the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts. Still would've liked to see something a bit more inventive though....

Well we've already seen each venue has it's own dual colour way, so I presume it's a case each venue will be decked out in banners of said colour combination. And then the streets will be lined with all colours, so I expect the colours will run in an order that then 'builds' up to the two colour- almost like a trail around London. So then, if you took that to the Park, you'll have all these colours running around the Park probably from the stadium, changing into the dual colours when it reaches each venue. Which, when youthink about it, is a pretty clever way of giving venues a character, and could probably involve some kind of wayfinding (Aquatics - blue venue!) and give a sense of individualism, yet coherence, to such a wide range of architecturally different venues across the country.

So In effect, yes, maybe it is a simple look, but works on all the different scales that it needs to work at - helicopter shots of the Park will pick up these beautiful shots of colour following through the Park to 'islands' of dual colour, the streets vistas will show these banners with an almost moving tone of colour running up them, with a festival of colour running down them, and then in the venues they'll be these bursts of energy surrounding the field of play which seem to look incredibly detailed and will pick up in all the shots of the sports being played.

And then the whole concept is tied together by the notion each of those lines is from the logo, energy lines, or energy shards, which metaphorically spread the inspiration of the Games around the world. So to me it seems something a little different, almost dare I say a step away, from previous looks which were quite individual in their location and message.

The bridges will be lit with lights in the water, as we've seen in that GLA document. Whether it will be that vast amount of colour I'm not sure.

That would be awesome if the river looked like that.

I am not a big fan of London's overall brand, but I look forward to seeing it in its fullness come July. I think Vancouver's venue designs near competition were beautiful, but too busy and detailed. I think London has a brand that stands out, and is simplified, which should make it better to see during competition.

Uniforms for the UK's 2012 ambassadors have been unveiled to the public for the first time.

They will be worn by thousands of volunteers during the Olympic Games.

London Mayor Boris Johnson met with 30 of the 8,000 Team London volunteers at Wimbledon station.

He revealed one of the ambassador 'pods' from which the volunteers will base themselves at more than 40 key locations across the capital to welcome visitors.

It's a nice idea, but aren't you just guessing about how the colors will modulate? Who's to say they will be artfully, thoughtfully arranged. The pics we've seen in this thread didn't suggest that to me.

YUCK!!! I'm seriously nauseated. Those are absolutely God-awful. I pity the poor volunteers. Hideous!

Photos used by the BBC always have this weird gray dullness to them so I do think those uniforms will look better in person.

And if what DarJoLe has to say about the Look is actually what they're going for... then great! That's certainty exemplary of how much thought and care London seems to have put forward in all areas of organizing these Games.

But I do wish the Look was more inventive and creative. Abstract shapes, sharp angles, and bright colors is a combination that feels like it has existed before out there somewhere in the design landscape, if that makes sense. It dosen't feel wholly original like say Athens' or Vancouver's did.

It has existed before... it was called the 1980's...
