Introduction to Pyeongchang

Recommended Posts

Well, I decided to do a little searching in Korean, and I came across photos I've never seen before. I've finally realized that if you want the real good photos and the real good news, you have to go to the source in the mother language. I'm going to post these photos in 4 parts:

(Intro)

Part 1: JUNGBONG, the future site of alpine downhill skiing, is a stand-alone venue near the Alpensia cluster for snow and sliding sports.

Part 2: GARIWANG, the mountains surrounding Jungbong.

Part 3: ALPENSIA, the heart of the Alpensia cluster, the site of ski jumping, bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, cross-country skiing and biathlon.

Part 4: GANGNEUNG, the coastal city serving as the heart of the ice cluster for skating sports (skating, hockey, curling)

(First, the Intro:)

What is that picture with the cruise ship (and sailing ship) on the cliff in Gangeung? Some sort of hotel?

Overall, the pics look great, more impressive than I thought. :)

Yes exactly, that's the Suncruise Resort. It's a hotel shaped like a cruise ship 60 metres above the sea to give the feeling of being on a cliff. It wouldn't be a bad place to stay for those coming to watch skating or hockey in 2018!

Btw, am I the only one who isn't able to view my Gariwang pics in part 2? If it's not just me, I'll re-post the photos.

Cool resort. A little kitschy, but cool.

Yes, if you can repost those pics, that would be great.

Thanks.

Alpensia looks amazing! But gangwong looks boaring and ugly! No offence.....

I mean gangeung

None taken! Gangneung is certainly no Seoul or Busan when it comes to culture and nightlife, and it's probably not even among the top 30 largest Korean cities, but it's the largest coastal city in Gangwon Province, and also conveniently happens to be the coastal city located nearest to Pyeongchang, making for a compact Games. It's not the most happening of places, but the scenery is decent and it's a vacation spot where Seoulites go to get away from it all. When the athletes and foreign visitors descend on Gangneung in 2018, they'll bring the party with them and I have no doubt "boring" will be the last thing on anyone's mind!

As for my favourite, I'm excited most about the development of Jungbong. I can't wait to see what they can turn that mountain into, both for the Winter Games and afterwards.

Part 4, GANGNEUNG:

So is that going to be the IOC hotel?

And it DOES have a revolving restaurant, too! (I think.) See, my revolving restaurant-winning Olympic city theory holds up!!

Do they hold lifeboat drills in that hotel?

Does it also have a veranda on the prow where one can stand up, Leonardo di Caprio-style and shout: I am king of the Chosun kingdom!! ?

And there is also a 2nd choice of staying in a "Chinese junk-style" hotel there (on the right) for the trashier guests??

I like it!! So cool.

Part 3, ALPENSIA:

I like how it's a little inspired by Calgary, the big jump tower with the viewing deck, and a similar Olympic Park layout. Looking forward to these games. B)

I think that smaller ship is more of a classic western galleon design.

  • 2 weeks later...

Given that Pyeongchang was on its third bid and last time around came very close to winning, I don't see that you've got anything to whine about mate. Everyone, including your bid tem, knew Korea would be strong. And so it proved.

This result wasn't a surprise. It was well-known long before the 2018 race started that Pyeongchang would have a great chance at winning.

Now answer me this:

If Korea winning is a sure sign of IOC corruption in your eyes, then surely Pyeongchang receiving half the votes for 2014 is also a sign of rot? In which case, you have to ask yourself Tulsa, why did Annecy enter a bid when they knew how corrupt the IOC was?

Either Annecy and the French NOC were both monumentally stupid for entering the race in the first place given the obvious corruption on show in the 2014 race, or the IOC is not corrupt. Take your pick.

Oh Rob, you should know by now that you're just simply wasting your breath (or this case, your typing, lol). Virtually everyone here has tried to talk some sense into Tulsa. But trying to do that is like trying to talk sense to a chimp. And even then, the chimp would still have more sense.
