gotosy
The Sochi 2014 Mascots Celebrated their Birthday with the Launch of the Stamps in their Honour The Sochi 2014 Mascots have celebrated their first birthday with the launch of the new stamp sheets featuring the Olympic mascots - Polar Bear, the Leopard, and the Hare, and the Paralympic mascots - the Ray of Light and the Snowflake. A total of 440,000 stamp sheets have been released, half illustrated with Olympic mascots alongside the same number featuring Paralympic ones. Schoolchildren in Sochi were the first lucky owners of the unique stamp sheets. Life sized Mascots’ puppets took part in the ceremony of the memorable cancellation of the stamp sheets – together with kids they watched a short film on the Sochi 2014 Legacy and took part in Olympic quiz. The launch of the stamp sheets featuring the Mascots, and of a decoratively bound Collector's Edition, marked the beginning of the Sochi 2014 philatelic program's second year. Already in April 2012 there will be a continuation of last year's series, "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia". And in October 2012 there will be new additions to the series: "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Olympic Winter sports". The Sochi 2014 philatelic program started last year with the launch of a stamp sheet entitled "Sochi - Capital of XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014". Moreover, the first stamps were released in the series "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Tourism on the Black Sea Coast of Russia" and "XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Olympic Winter sports". In total, 10 192 000 stamps were released in 2011. The first few months of last year showed that there is widespread interest in the Sochi 2014 stamps, both among Russian stamp collectors and more broadly across the country. Notes for the editor Altogether, 4 postal blocks, 45 stamps devoted to different stories, and postcards, together with sets of all released stamps in decorative cover and other philatelic output will have been released by the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. The themes of the Sochi 2014 postage products will cover winter sports, Olympic sports venues and views of Krasnodar Region. The Sochi 2014 Mascots were chosen during the all-Russian vote on the Channel One Russia on February, 26, 2011. More than 1,4 mln. people took part in it. It is an “Olympic record” – for the first time in history so many people voted during the live television show in Russia. As a result, the Hare, the Polar Bear and the Leopard have been chosen as the official Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games mascots and the Ray of Light and the Snowflake have been chosen as the official Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games mascots. http://sochi2014.com/en/sochi-live/news/44674/

SwissO
27 april 2012 Magnolias in Bloom on the Sochi 2014 Stamps A new range of stamps has been released in Sochi, as part of the series "The XXII Olympic Winter Games of 2014. Tourism on Russia's Black Sea Coast." The stamps feature some of the best-known views of the Krasnodar region, including such areas as the Dendrarium Park in Sochi and Parus Rock(also known as Sail Rock). 700,000 copies of each stamp have been printed and are available in denominations of 15, 20, 25 and 30 rubles. A commemorative ceremony to mark the stamps’ cancellation took place in the Dendrarium Park in Sochi. Theodore Oben, the Head of the UN Environment Program was the honorable guest of the event that once again emphasized the constant cooperation between the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the UNEP and strong adherence of Sochi to staging the Games in harmony with Nature. The ceremony was also attended by the representatives of the Russian post office and Russian Ministry of Natural Resources. In total, the series "The XXII Olympic Winter Games of 2014. Tourism on Russia's Black Sea Coast" has seen the release of 4 stamps press sheets (2x4) with stylized fields and with 4 stamps and 4 coupons, press sheets (3x4) with 6 stamps and 6 coupons, and also 6 types of sheets with coupons in Russian, English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese. The stamps depict views of the Black Sea coastline and will be instantly recognizable to both Sochi residents and tourists - even those who have only set foot in the resort once. Among them are Parus Rock - a striking geological monolith, 30 meters tall and shaped like a rectangular sail; Sochi's Dendrarium Park - a unique ensemble of landscape art, a construction modeled on Franco-Italian terraced parks; the Orekhovsky Waterfall - the second-highest double-cascade waterfall in the Sochi area; and Sochi's railway station, the main gateway to the country's most famous resort. The release of stamps in the series "The XXII Olympic Winter Games of 2014. Tourism on Russia's Black Sea Coast" was also added by the envelope featuring the original stamp, "The XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi: The mascots". http://sochi2014.com/en/sochi-live/news/45892/

To see how that motif will look on the TV screen, see Madame Chirac & her coat (probably a de la Croix or a Jean-Paul Gaultier design) starting at 4:40 in the following clip. I think that is where the Sochi designers got their inspiration!
