The official match schedule for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ was provisionally approved today by the FIFA Executive Committee during a meeting held in Zurich.

Fans can now mark their 2015 calendars with the world’s largest women’s football tournament, which will dominate the Canadian landscape from 6 June until 5 July 2015.

The competition will kick off with the opening ceremony and opening matches in Edmonton. In total, 52 matches will be played over 30 days from coast to coast in six venues. The final match will be played in Vancouver.

Canada, as the hosts, have been named as the A1 seeds, which means that they will play their first two group matches in Edmonton.

For the first time, the 2015 tournament will welcome 24 teams from around the world, a milestone in women’s football as the beautiful game continues to grow in all regions of the globe.

The qualification matches will begin in April 2013 with the preliminary round in Europe and will continue until November 2014, ending with the play-off matches between the fourth-placed team from CONCACAF (North, Central America and the Caribbean) and the third-placed team from CONMEBOL (South America).

Canada 2015 will see the participation of five teams from the AFC, three teams from CAF, three or four teams from CONCACAF (not counting the Canadian hosts), two or three teams from CONMEBOL, eight teams from UEFA, and one team from OFC.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has also announced that the highly sought-after tickets will go on sale in the third quarter of 2014.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The official match schedule and host cities for Canada 2014 will be announced in the coming months and ticket sales will begin in August 2013.

Today’s announcement of the official match schedule for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ represents another important step on the road towards this eagerly anticipated global event.
Excitement is certainly building in the host nation as plans take shape for a tournament that is expected to build on the remarkable successes of previous FIFA Women’s World Cups.
In the wake of this latest landmark being passed, the tournament’s National Organising Committee chairman Peter Montopoli spoke to FIFA.com about what fans and players can expect from Canada 2015.
FIFA.com: What will the FIFA Women's World Cup be like in Canada in 2015?
Peter Montopoli: Any time you host a FIFA World Cup, you know that it is going to be special, perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your country. In this case, we will be hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup from coast to coast across five time zones in six venues, from Vancouver near the Pacific Ocean to Moncton near the Atlantic Ocean. We believe this competition has the power to engage a nation while in turn produce an exceptional atmosphere for the matches themselves.
What can Canada promise as host for this competition?
The FIFA Women's World Cup is a world-class competition that offers the best in football from around the globe. It is important that Canada produces a world-class stage for this competition. Our nation has proven in the past to be an excellent host for major sporting events, including the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in 2002 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007. I believe we will prove it once again, infused with the character of our multicultural society, we will welcome the world through the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015.
What goals have you set for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015?
We want every Canadian to have the opportunity to be a part of this competition in 2015, to have the chance to touch and feel a piece of the excitement. We have set a target to draw a record 1.5-million spectators to this competition, through 52 matches in six stadiums in venues. Remember, never has this been done before in our nation before - one major competition hosted simultaneously across six cities from coast to coast. We want this to be the most successful FIFA Women's World Cup in history!
What will the FIFA Women's World Cup do for football in Canada?
The FIFA Women's World Cup must be bigger than just the 52 matches themselves. We have experienced this with each of the past FIFA competitions hosted in our country. From the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, we want to leave a legacy for sport, for women, and for Canada that reaches far beyond the competition's 30 days. Certainly, this competition will have a positive effect on all levels of football across the country - both men's and women's soccer - but it most surely will help establish a new era in the women's game.

Seems like having a round of 16 with a field of 24 is unnecessary. Good selection of cities, though. I'm thinking of going to it, although in 2015 I'm definitely going to Beijing in August for the IAAF championships and Las Vegas in September for the FILA World Wrestling championships.

That is the aim to have the most tickets sold ever for the Women's World CUp.

Nice, Germany was a big succes so if Canada has even bigger attendences, the 2019 host is gonna have a very hard work.

I have a friend in Montreal, I wish I can attend.

Most of the teams will feel weird, but the good news is that they still have two years to play on artiicial truf.

Its an adjustment. Turf fields are getting more popular for Football in Canada (even at the recreational level) due to them being way more durable than grass fields in our climate. I can't say I'm too found of them, but at the end are aware of it and make a point of adapting to the surface before the tournament it should be a complete non-issue.

When we hosted tne U-20 World Cup some of the fields where turf, There was some minor grumbling but nothing too bad.

Except, apparently, grass seed.

Unfortunately. Grass is only suitable for sports where grass is the only use. All 6 stadiums have other tenants that use artifical. Montreal could bring in grass but that would have to come from the private sector.

Edmonton is excited to be named one of the four Canadian cities selected to host matches during the 2014 FIFA U-20 Womens' World Cup. The other cities are Vancouver, Toronto and Moncton.

"This will be a terrific build up to our hosting of 11 matches, including the opening ceremony and bronze medal game, for the FIFA Womens' World Cup in 2015," says Mayor Stephen Mandel. "Excitement is already building in our community for this event and this announcement adds to that. We look forward to welcoming teams, fans and visitors from around the globe to Edmonton."

Matches for the U-20 tournament will be held August 5 to 24, 2014. A schedule for the tournament has yet to be released. Canada is the first country to host the tournament twice and Edmonton has played a critical role in both events.

For the 2015 FIFA Womens' World Cup Edmonton will host 11 matches. Besides the opening and bronze medal game Edmonton will also host both a semi-final and quarter final and seven other matches, two of the games will feature Canada's bronze medal winning team from the2012 Olympics.

Edmonton's strong interest in, and support for, women's soccer was ignited in 2002 when the city hosted matches during the the U-19s FIFA Women's World Championships, including the final game. "Edmontonians interest in soccer has grown substantially since 2002 when Christine Sinclair led Canada's team to the final of the U-19 competition," says Richard Adams, Executive Director for Alberta Soccer. "This is a new opportunity for us to see the next generation of soccer players that represent the future of our sport internationally and I am confident Edmonton will do an outstanding job in both 2014 and 2015."

The hosting of international events is an important aspect of the Edmonton Events strategy, a plan developed to attract and host events as part of a strategy to advance the city's reputation globally. The Events Strategy is linked to the City's economic plan for the future, The Way We Prosper. The number one goal in the plan is to build a confident and progressive image globally for Edmonton. The Events Strategy was developed by Edmonton Events, a partnership between the City and Edmonton Economic Development, whose mandate it is to attract events to the city.

Interesting to note Toronto was selected.

Canada 2015 strives TO A GREATER GOAL
(FIFA.com) Friday 9 May 2014

FIFA and the National Organizing Committee today unveiled the Official Slogan for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™: TO A GREATER GOAL. The reveal was made just before kick-off of the Canada v USA women’s international friendly match at Winnipeg Stadium, with the slogan presented to fans on two large banners in Canada’s two official languages, English and French (VERS LE GRAND BUT).

“The Official Slogan is a core part of the identity of a FIFA competition. TO A GREATER GOAL has a very strong meaning in terms of what the FIFA Women’s World Cup can achieve and leave as a legacy, not only in Canada but also in general for the development of women’s football worldwide,” said Tatjana Haenni, FIFA Deputy Director of the Competitions Division and Head of Women’s Competitions.

”For sport, for women, for Canada: those are three qualities that highlight our ambitions in hosting a successful FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said Victor Montagliani, chairman of the National Organizing Committee and President of the Canadian Soccer Association. “In welcoming the world, the FIFA Women’s World Cup can serve TO A GREATER GOAL. Our Official Slogan serves a dual purpose for the sport and for humanity. It represents the best of on-field performance and a unique victory for all, beginning with girls and women.

”It is significant that our Official Slogan TO A GREATER GOAL is presented for the first time here in Winnipeg. Always one of Canada’s important football cities because of its central location, Winnipeg was the site of our first-ever women’s national team camp back on Canada Day 1 July 1986. Incidentally, Winnipeg also hosted our first-ever home women’s international friendly match four years later on 23 July 1990.

”For more than 100 years, soccer has been one of our most-beloved sports in Canada, boasting some of the country’s greatest athletes, ambassadors and heroes. More than 30 years ago when we launched our national competition in 1982, we were one of the few countries in the world that embraced women’s soccer. Today, more than 125 countries are participating in this one-of-a-kind sporting competition, with 24 finalists to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals from 6 June to 5 July 2015.”

The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ Official Slogan, TO A GREATER GOAL, will feature prominently in all promotional elements in the lead up to the competition and during the competition itself. The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ runs coast to coast across Canada in six Host Cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Edmonton, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Ottawa, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; and Moncton, New Brunswick.

As expected, Japan and Australia joined the field of 24 today. Australia will be making its 6th consecutive WWC appearance, while the defending world champions become the first team to guarantee it's continued streak of qualifying for every WWC will remain intact (Germany, Brazil, Norway, Sweden, Nigeria, and the USA are the others who could join them in doing so as qualification plays out).

Thailand qualify as the fifth place team at the Asian Women's Cup. This will be the nation's first appearance in either a men's or women's world cup. They join Chinese Taipei (1991) and Equatorial Guinea (2011) as nations whose have qualified for the Women's World Cup but have not for the men's edition.

Six of the 24 spots are now claimed. A couple European teams may clinch their spots next month, otherwise we now wait until autumn to resume filling out the field.
