Again, Annecy's not doing this to give the IOC any favors. Annecy WANTS these Games just as much as Munich & PyeongChang do, & as much as Reno would've wanted them, too. So lets not embellish on how the IOC should give Annecy "merci" because they were so "desperate" for takers in this race, because that's not necessarily an accurate assessment. That was never my point. I was simply responding to the Australian poster who claimed that somehow Annecy should be grateful to have been allowed to bid in the first place because its bid wasn't perfect. Of course Annecy wants the games. If it didn't it would be damn stupid! But I still maintain that in view of the paucity in the number of bidding cities, the ioc was probably only too happy to have a French bid for 2018 to add to the two existing ones. After all, let's not forget that Samaranch conned Chirac into bidding for the 2008 SOGs in order to "sex up" the existing bid knowing full well Paris had no chance whatsoever because he had already made his mind in favour of Beijing. C'mon guys, this is France, and the Haute Savoie to boot. As we've been told over and over the past few months, and quite truthfully, it would be hard to pinpoint a potential candidate with such excellent existing winter sports facilities and locations. Even if it had been up against a packed mob of rival applications from the likes of Norway, Swtizerland, the eastern bloc or the "-Stans", I still would have expected it to make the candidate shortlist. So it tweaked a few venue and transport plans after the initial evaulation? Plenty of bidder in SOG and WOG races fine-tune their plans after the initial stage, after they've had their initial feedback from the IOC technical committee. I still don't expect Annecy to figure highly in the final vote, but to me that's more rotation and troubled bid committee organisation, funding and administration at play rather than technical plans or capability. The IOC's preliminary evaluation gave Annecy a 'stern warning' that their bid was found to be totally unacceptable. Annecy did come back full circle though, but yet the final evaluation report still had concerns over some logistics. And perhaps Annecy did get a pass this time because it's "France", but the IOC certainly didn't do that with Lille for 2004, when the IOC had a record 11 applicants to choose from. So that tends to believe that had 2018 had 8 or more applicants, with at least 5 of those being deemed worthy to continue, Annecy, with their non-starter of an initial bid, don't think the IOC would've bothered with the "hall pass". But the new concept is really excellent and I don't see how Annecy could have any logistic problem when it manages more than 150.000 spectators at the lake festival night and 500.000 spectators at the Annecy stage of the 2009 tour de France. (plus, 68 Million overnights per year in Savoie-Mt-Blanc, 250.000 spectators at the 2009 alpine skiing world championships....) Annecy atmosphere... as if you were there... Production wise it was sound (even if the venue plan was lousy). As for Lille 2004, they used a mix of venue photographs, poorly done artist's impressions and poorly done computer renders (heck for some of the pictograms they could find a human figure for (I assumed they used Barcelona 1992) they simply used the federation's logo. An example of this is using the ITU logo for the Triathlon page and it's location on the maps). Then you had the spread out venue plan that practically tried to use all the existing venues that Lille and the surrounding region had in place already.
