Statement of the independent FIFA Ethics Committee

Franz Beckenbauer has been provisionally banned from taking part in any football-related activity, at any level, for 90 days. The deputy chairman of the FIFA Ethics Committee’s adjudicatory chamber, Alan Sullivan, issued the ban at the request of the chairman of the investigatory chamber, Michael J. Garcia. The ban is effective immediately.

The decision was taken pursuant to the FIFA Code of Ethics art. 83 par. 1, on the grounds that a breach of the Code of Ethics appears to have been committed and a decision on the main issue may not be taken early enough. The apparent breach relates to Mr Beckenbauer’s failure to cooperate with an Ethics Committee investigation despite repeated requests for his assistance, including requests that he provide information during an in-person interview or in response to written questions provided in both English and German. The case is now the subject of formal investigation proceedings being conducted by investigatory chamber member Vanessa Allard as chief of the investigation.

Pursuant to art. 35 par. 2©, the chairman of the adjudicatory chamber, Judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, withdrew from participation in this matter.

LOL! Beckenbauer surely had some dubious role in that matter, but I guess it's more due to his usual carelessness.

There are far bigger fish to fry in the whole 2022 debacle, but obviously, Blatter has no interest in that and rather wants to diverge attention to side issues.

You might be interested to learn it was Britain's FIFA member Jim Boyce who called for the suspension. Not sure this one came directly from Step Ladder.

OK. There's a definitely a point in banning Beckenbauer, but in the overall picture, I think this will turn out to be a minor issue. And it does play into Blatter's hands as he can claim that FIFA has a working ethics policy.

I can't find it but from the media and reports during and after the vote Beckenbauer likely voted for the Americans.

Franz Beckenbauer: Fifa lifts German legend's 90-day ban

Fifa has lifted the 90-day suspension on football activity imposed on German legend Franz Beckenbauer.

Beckenbauer, a World Cup winner as coach and captain, was told on Friday the ban had been lifted with immediate effect, his manager Marcus Hoefl said.

The 68-year-old was banned for failing to help an inquiry into alleged corruption in the 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) World Cup bids.

He was part of the Fifa executive committee that made the awards.

Beckenbauer lifted the World Cup as both a player (1974) and a manager (1990).

"I under-estimated the matter,'' Beckenbauer said in the statement released by Hoefl, blaming the fact that "such voluminous administrative things'' are usually dealt with by his management team.

He added that, despite the lifting of the ban, Beckenbauer will not be travelling to the World Cup taking place in Brazil.

I guess the whole thing was just a smokescreen anyway.

Now it looks as if FIFA really tackles ethics while at the same time nothing of real importance is being done. I've said before that Beckenbauer's behaviour was dubious and invited a reaction, but there's much bigger fish in the whole 2018/2022 affair that should be fried.

Investigation into World Cup bidding corruption won't be made public

Back in April, former United States prosecutor Michael Garcia was chosen to head an investigation into corruption allegations regarding the vote awarding future World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

On Monday Around the Rings reported that Garcia's report will not be made public. So much for any pretense of FIFA transparency.

"We have no update concerning the delivery of the report of the investigatory chamber of the independent ethics committee," a FIFA spokesman told Around the Rings. "Please note that in accordance with art 28 and 36 of the FIFA Code of Ethics the report will be handed over to the adjudicatory chamber but only the final decision of the adjudicatory chamber may be made public."

Essentially, whatever is decided after the investigation will be announced, though whatever Garcia finds will not. So, hypothetically, Garcia could unearth evidence of corruption and recommend that the vote to award Qatar and Russia the tournament be nullified. FIFA, however, could decide to keep the tournaments as is and honor the previous vote.

In this case, only the decision to keep the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and Qatar and '22 will be announced to the public.

What shall Fifa do now?

- Give the 2018 Fifa World Cup to England and the 2022 Fifa World Cup to Australia.

- Sack Blatter and all those involved with the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 corruption.

- Fairer Voting System.
