Concepts alternation

Recommended Posts

JC Killy opposes the "concepts alternation" to the traditional "continent alternation".

What is the best concept foer 2018?

New horizons : PyeongChang like Socchi 2014

Big City + skiing resort: Munich like Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010

Snow village atmosphere: Annecy like Lillehammer 1994

How is Sochi a new horizon? Their whole bid was centred around their tradition of winter dominance. Remember Putin's speech? "Russia has made many contributed to winter sport, but has never had the honour of hosting the Winter Olympics?" Remember Plushenko showing his quad at the skating rink they built in Guatemala 4 years ago for the IOC session? Remember Fetisov and all the other Russian winter sports greats that showed up?

Your concept isn't bad, except that the Winter Games haven't really gone to a new horizon in a long time. Nagano was the last debatable new horizon, and even then Japan had already had a Games. So maybe we have to look back to 1984 Sarajevo to find a new horizon Winter Games.

I'm not sure you'd be too happy with your concept though, since that would mean having a new frontier Winter Games every 12 years. You have enough trouble accepting a new frontier Winter Games every 20 years as it is.

New Horizons is not just a geographical concept.

It requires conviction for winter sports.

Sochi was New Horizons, it's mean Sochi is not the Alps.

Non-traditional Alpine, New region.

The day before the vote, Putin said about it.

They are one of the winter sports big 3 (Russia, Norway, Germany).

It is truly New Horizons.

Pyeongchang is not New Horizons.

Pyeongchang's condition does not go with Winter Olympics.

They can't be guaranteed the best.

Still it makes a new horizon. Russia and particularly that region have never hosted Winter Games before.

Pyeongchang is not a new horizon? You have just insulted any future Winter bid from Asia, Oceania, South America and Africa. You have also insulted any new frontier Summer Olympic bids from South America and Africa who don't have any particular conviction for summer sports or aren't part of a "big 3." You're telling IOC members from all those places they're not good enough. You're telling Korea they're not good enough.

How is Sochi a new horizon?

The goa of thebid is "new markets".

You chose a place that can suit for winter games and build all what is needed to meet IOC requirements.

Then Sweden would be a new horizon? Quebec? They are regions that have never hosted the Winter Games before either. Torino is a new horizon? Italian Piedmont had never hosted a Games before, only Veneto.

New horizons in this context is much about expanding winter sports to new markets and introducing more people to such sports. The winter sports market in Russia is already saturated. That doesn't make much of a new horizon.

No, no and no.

The Caucasus region is totally new for hosting Games and has not much in common with Moscow unlike Sweden and Norway or Quebec and and other parts of Canada (or France).

They're not New horizons, Nobody say that.

New horizons has major meanings beyond the geographical concept.

Russia is emerging country and the most obvious market to the future.

It is base on their traditions.

That's where we'll disagree. I do not consider Russia a new horizon in winter sports. Sorry. We'll leave it to others to decide.

Sotchi is a new horizon, a new part of the world with a big capacity to develop Winter sports... PC don't have the same potential.
