arwebb
It's a massive project and while I realise there is work to be done at the site before then, I wonder whether we shouldn't be starting sooner. London 2012 Olympic Park Construction To Start In 2008
The_Torch
I don't understand this statement as it directly contradicts the presentation speech given by Olympics minister in Singapore. According to her, the Aquatic centre - Hockey Stadia and Velodrome would be completed by 2008. At least I think that's what she said. Oh well, I'm sure they know what they're doing....we hope! :laughlong:
MercifulZeus!
I took the statement to mean that principal construction work on the large venues such as the stadium will begin in 2008. I imagine there will be an enormous amount of decontamination, demolition, access construction and landscaping to be done before then. Don't forget that the whole Olympic Park site will have to be secured (i.e. fenced off) before major construction gets under way. Two years' preparatory work doesn't seem excessive for a project of this scale.
MIKYSALT
The Olympic stadium can't be finished to soon or your left with the problem of what to do with it wile we wait for the Olympics. also Did they announce the architect for the Olympic park yet I don't think it maters who it is as long as they rise to the occasion. The only danger I foresee is London ending up imitating Sydney too closely. I know that if you're going to model your games on any, these are probably the best to go for but London's park needs to look British. I think this has more to do with small details rather than the architecture itself. I hope they choose to model the environment on an English garden with all the colour that goes with that, rather than getting in low maintainance grasses and palm trees etc. Get in some big British oaks to surround the stadium and plant some hedgerows and install some proper fountains around the place! If anything, I think this games' look should be modelled on Wimbledon, which we already do so well, rather than any previous hosts' games. Also, install some British artwork and sculpture and properly integrate the artistic /music programme in the Olympics. Get an orchestra to play the national anthems rather than using a tacky tape and have musicians and street entertainers outside the venues entertaining the waiting crowds. MIKYSALT
I read some where that the British architect that designed the Barcelona Olympic park thought landscape gardening should be an important ingredient in the London Olympic park . MIKYSALT
I forgot to say, I met the architect that designed the new no 1 court at wimbledon the year it opened. He was standing on the steps admiring his work, I asked him how to get to Henman hill He said I should know I designed the place . I cant remember his name ,but he would be a good person to work on the Olympic park.
