Rio 2016 Preparations - Venue & Infrastructure Developments

Essentially a park for the athletes with I think training and relaxation areas. I don't think any actual venues are located there so it's a bit misleading calling it an Olympic Park.

"During the 2016 Olympics, the park will then become the exclusive leisure space for athletes with tennis and beach volleyball courts, soccer fields and equipment for windsurfing and kayaking at their disposal."

It has been called Olympic Athlete's Park here in Brazil.

The Olympic Park for audiences will be inside the OTC where most of the sports will be played.

Here is the render of the Olympic Park

projetorio2016_62.jpg

I can´t stop watching this picture and imagine that, once upon a time, there was a race track over there. :(

...and I still can´t forget why they killed the race track, instead of recuperate to host big events again.

I hope that the new race track will be ready before they start to destroy this one.

Sorry, my bad, THIS is the winning render

You can download the aerial view of the future olympic park plus the legacy plan up to 2030 here. It's quite impressive, though I'm not completely sold on the whole homage to copacabana in the middle of the park, to be honest. But we'll see. They have 5 years to prove me wrong.

sadly main stadium are not on the new venue list..hurmm,and its location is far from this new park

Well, yeah. The stadiums are in the Maracanã Cluster, not in the Barra one.

WOW!!! Now we can start to dream about how the games will look like!!!

Love the renders. I saw others in the internet. It will get really great!!!

Rominger, I'll miss Jacarepagua circuit too. It was a special track.

But maybe it will be better to have a brand new speedway in Rio...

I also expect they build the speedway as soon as possible.

I got even more excited about the plan, and specially about the lecacy (really nice plan) of Rio Olympic Park.

Watch this video, really nice (despite the grunge graphics)

Are these the final venue designs or are the design of the arenas in this materplan just indicative for the time being?

It's seems some will be final designs. It's not decided yet. But, for sure, the masterplan of Olympic Park is approved.

And we know, everything in this kind of construction can change a little bit. Still, I like the renders.

there will be competitions for each venues designs

...

Design projects for each one of the temporary and permanent sporting venues to be built in the Park will be chosen through subsequent competitions while there will be a separate competition to design the new golf course to be built in the city for the Olympic Games when the sport make its debut at the event.

So this is essnetially the equivilent of the early London renders with the insect-like Olympic Stadium and grassed over venues, and massive concourses with no railings etc!

It's nice to get a sense of the layout and the park-life, but the venues still need to be designed so it's hard to tell quite what the end result will be.

Incidentally, speaking of London:

British firm AECOM lands leading role for Rio 2016 Olympic Park

ritish firm AECOM has won the international competition to design the masterplan for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park, picking up the $62,000 (£38,000/€43,000) prize money.

The London-based building design and management company was named as the winner at a special ceremony in Rio on the site of where the Olympic Park will be located, as a high profile delegation, which included Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman, Mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes and Brazil's Sports Minister Orlando Silva, looked on.

The competition brought together 60 entries from firms in 18 countries, with a final decision made by a panel that consisted of seven representatives from Rio City Hall, the International Union of Architects, Brazil's Architects Institute, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee and the Federal Government.

The announcement means that AECON will be working on their second successive Olympic Park masterplan after the firm designed the masterplan for the London 2012 Olympic Park.

"We are delighted and honoured to win this appointment and have the opportunity to work on Rio 2016," said AECOM's managing director for the UK and Ireland Bill Hanway.

"This is a fantastic city in a fantastic country and we know the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016 will be a tremendous success."

The masterplan outlines how the Olympic Park area will be used, as well as where the public spaces, squares and parks will be located.

It also outlines the location of the permanent and temporary venues and the future real estate developments to be built at the site.

Detailed planning will now be carried out over the next months by AECOM in conjunction with the parties involved in the park construction.

Design projects for each one of the temporary and permanent sporting venues to be built in the Park will be chosen through subsequent competitions while there will be a separate competition to design the new golf course to be built in the city for the Olympic Games when the sport make its debut at the event.

Brazil unveils new air traffic control software

Brazil's air force says it will install new software to improve air traffic control across the nation.

The air force says the locally developed software will help avoid a repeat of the chaotic situation in 2007 when radar failures and other problems prompted mass cancellations and delays.

The air force said in a statement that the Sagitario system will give controllers many improved tools, including better access to weather and flight data.

Air travel demand will increase significantly in Brazil when it hosts the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

The government is already working to improve the country's outdated airport infrastructure.

IOC attends opening of second station for the Transoeste BRT line

One of Rio 2016™’s bid commitments, the line will connect highly populated areas to Barra, where most of the sporting events at the Rio 2016™ Games will take place

An International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegation this (Tuesday, November 8) attended the opening of the second benchmark station for the Transoeste BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) line, one of the commitments made by Rio de Janeiro when bidding for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The station was unveiled by Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, in the presence of the chair of the International Olympic Committee’s Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016™ Games, Nawal El Moutawakel; the IOC executive director for the Olympic Games, Gilbert Felli; and the organisation’s Sports director, Christophe Dubi; as well as the president and the CEO of the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman and Leonardo Gryner.

The IOC delegation, in Rio de Janeiro for the fourth Rio 2016™ Project Review meeting, took the opportunity to learn how a BRT station will work by visiting the facility located in the junction of Estrada do Magarça and Avenida das Americas, in Guaratiba, which is 75.40m long and holds up to 3,000 passengers per hour.

...

The Transoeste line will connect highly populated areas such as Campo Grande and Santa Cruz to Barra, where most of the sporting events at the Rio 2016™ Games will take place. Venues at the region include the Olympic Park, the Riocentro Convention Centre and the golf course, in addition to the Athletes’ Village, the Main Press Centre (MPC) and the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC).

The Transoeste will have 64 stations, which will link the line to other modes of transport. With an investment worth of 800 million Brazilian reais (400 million USD) by the City of Rio and completion expected for the first half of 2012, the Transoeste will span for 56km, resulting in a 50-per-cent drop in journey times, and benefit around 220,000 people daily. Transoeste’s first benchmark station opened September this year, on Avenida das Americas, opposite the Novo Leblon development, in Barra.

The Transoeste is part of the transportation improvements that will remain as a legacy of the Rio 2016™ Games, which also include the Transcarioca BRT line (under construction), the Transolimpica BRT line (currently being tendered) and the Transbrasil BRT line – forming a road system with faster transportation and entirely segregated from car traffic.

Oscar Niemeyer visits the new Sambódromo, stage of Carnival and a Rio 2016™ venue

The new Sambódromo, stage of Archery and the finish line of the Rio 2016™ Marathon, to be inaugurated this Sunday 12, had an illustrious guest last Wednesday. The legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer, responsible for the original project in the 80s, was hosted by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, to walk along part of the “Samba Passageway” and see the refurbishment works which are about to be completed.

Niemeyer, 104 years old, could see the realisation of its initial proposal, which included grandstands on both sides of the avenue. The new format has increased capacity from 12500 to 72500 people.

“I am happy to see this new work which actually belongs to the people and stages the party of the people every year, the Carnival”, Niemeyer said.

Mayor Eduardo Paes reminded that Sambódromo is the second venue which has been refurbished for Rio 2016™ by the city hall, after the Athletes’ Park. He celebrated the possibility of completing Niemeyer’s dream.

“He created this scenery almost 30 years ago. We have now finished it. This work has emerged from Rio’s Olympic dream. Sambódromo is an icon, one of Rio’s landmarks. This work will give Carnival a new look as of 2012”, he said.

The BRTS – Bus Rapid Transit System, planned by Daimler AG will cover a total distance of 150 kms and will connect several important locations. Mercedes Benz Brazil has already received order for more than 90 articulated buses, which will be running on these routes once the services commence. The first section – Transoeste has already commenced operation since 6th June. Transoeste stretches from Santa Cruz to Barra da Tijuca, with a branch to Campo Grande.

Apart from providing luxury buses, Transoeste reduces travel time by 50% and has the capacity to transport 220,000 passengers in a single day. These articulated buses are called Ligeirão or large rapid bus and can accommodate 145 people comfortably.

..

The articulated bus with the star also boasts state-of-the-art BlueTec 5 exhaust gas treatment technology, which meets the PROCONVE P-7 emission standard (similar to Euro V) that went into effect in Brazil in January 2012.
