I love aerial cable cars. Got a few in NZ, more for sightseeing that mass transit. Although the system in Christchurch was suppose to link with Lyttleton but the earthquake took care of that.

First rails installed in the new line 4 of Rio de Janeiro subway to link Downtown-Copacabana-Barra da Tijuca

2121580.jpg

After the World Cup, all eyes will turn to works of the Olympic Games. One of the main works, the Subway Line 4 (Barra da Tijuca to Ipanema reaching Line 1), begins to take shape with the installation of 400 meters of track in the tunnel that will connect Barra da Tijuca to SĂŁo Conrado, the first to be opened with the expansion works of Rio's subway. Scheduled to go into operation in 2016, the new line will connect Barra da Tijuca, the main center of the Rio 2016 Games competitions, Ipanema, a neighborhood in the southern city.
In all, over 1,100 used rails in the tunnel between Barra and SĂŁo Conrado, each 18 feet long and more than a ton. It is expected that each week 300 meters of new railing are placed. "Since we installed 400 meters of track between SĂŁo Conrado and Barra and the forecast is that each week 300 new meters are installed for the full operation of Line 4 in 2016," said Deputy Secretary of the Department of Special Projects Staff, Rodrigo scallop.

Guys, trust me, this subway works are the main ones for the Olympic Games success in Rio.

Without this line, there will be BIG problems on the link from touristic zones (Copacabana and Ipanema) to Barra Cluster.

And also, this will be one of the biggest legacies of the Olympic Games.

Looks like they're going to replace the seats, but I don't know to what extent they will... (from scc)

Source?

Because, if you are claiming this based on the picture, it's just a mosaic with the chairs for the sponsor brand "Brahma beer"...

I just got it off skyscrapercity. thats why i said (from ssc) above the photo. It didn't say they were changing the seats, I just assumed because there aren't any other pictures showing the brand logo on there.

Gotcha

Surely sponsor named seats aren't allowed in Olympic Games, at least not in what is going to be (one of) the main venue(s).

Yes, it will be removed.

Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic athletics stadium will reopen next month, almost two years after being closed over safety issues - it may also soon have a new name.

The Estadio Joao Havelange, known locally as the Engenhao, was shut in March 2013 after an independent engineer’s report showed the venue’s roof could collapse due to structural problems.

Botafogo, which has a long-term tenancy agreement at the venue, will officially reopen the stadium in a match against Boavista on February 1. The 45,000-seat venue will initially have its capacity limited to 20,000 spectators but is expected to be fully opened by March.

Botafogo officials have requested local government permission to rename the stadium after their former player Nilton Santos, the 1958 and 1062 World Cup winner who died in 2013 aged 88.

This would solve an embarrassing issue for the International Olympic Committee.

Havelange, former long-serving FIFA president, gave up his honorary IOC membership two years ago after it was revealed he and son-in-law Ricardo Teixeira had received millions of dollars in bribes from the collapsed marketing company ISL.

Thomas Bach, even before taking over IOC presidency in 2013, had indicated it would preferable to see a stadium name change.

The Engenhao, which will host track and field events during the 2016 Olympics, will have its capacity increased to 60,000 ahead of the Games.

Good news, but again, if you go to Rio and ask where "JoĂŁo Havelange Stadium" is placed, not many will know what you are talking about.

In Brazil the stadium is known as EngenhĂŁo, after the name of the district around the stadium: Engenho de Dentro.

^If what you say is true, then being a lost tourist asking for directions to "JoĂŁo Havelange Stadium" would be utter hell.

At least, people will last longer to realize what you are talking about... EngenhĂŁo or Olmypic Stadium are far better shots.

Even the signage nearby the stadium points to the EngenhĂŁo Stadium...

It's very common to Brazilians to ignore names of the stadiums and put nicknames to it...
Almost all the stadiums of World Cup had names like "Mario Filho Stadium", "PlĂĄcido Castello Stadium", "Governor MagalhĂŁes Pinto Stadium" and noboby knows those names, but: MaracanĂŁ, CastelĂŁo, MineirĂŁo...

Exactly because many of the tributes are for controversial people or politicians... So, just create a "Big + Name of district/place" nickname for it and ignore official name forever...

BTW, virtually nobody knows here Brazil that the stadium used for the World Cup in Sao Paulo was named as "Arena de SĂŁo Paulo" abroad...

Here in Brazil the stadium is known as ItaquerĂŁo (Big + Itaquera)...

And even the signs during the World Cup have it or Brazilians would get lost because stupidity from FIFA to name it "Arena de SĂŁo Paulo", simply ignoring the fact the city have a club called SĂŁo Paulo with a big stadium too in the other side of the metro area...

Same goes with JoĂŁo Havelange Stadium or worse JH Stadium (very GamesBids-ish term).

So would the Olympic decorated signage/maps use "official" names or the nicknames?

Nicknames...

EngenhĂŁo (JH Stadium) will "Olympic Stadium"...

HSBC Arena will be "Rio Olympic Arena"...

Mario Filho Stadium as always will be "MaracanĂŁ Stadium"...

And thankfully Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Park (few in Rio knows this name) will be "Flamengo Park" as all cariocas knows it.

The only exception seems to be JĂșlio Delamare Aquatic Center in MaracanĂŁ Complex, but, somehow, the place got no nickname in the past and it's famous as this.
