Record-breaking goalkeeper Rogério Ceni scores his 100th career goal

The Brazilian Rogério Ceni converted a free kick to become the first goalkeeper to score 100 career goals, helping São Paulo defeat their arch-rivals Corinthians 2-1 in the process.

"It was beautiful," said Ceni, who was the third goalkeeper in Brazil's squad when they won the 2002 World Cup. "As a goalkeeper you don't enter the match thinking about scoring a goal, but it happened just as I wanted: with a free kick, deciding an important match. For me, it doesn't matter that it was against Corinthians, but for the fans it must have been important."

Ceni struck a right-footed shot into the top right corner nine minutes into the second half to put São Paulo 2-0 up. It was his 56th free-kick goal, while the others came from penalties.

Fifa says Ceni has 98 goals, but the goalkeeper counts two he scored in unofficial friendlies: one against a combined Santos and Flamengo side in 1998 and the other against the Russian club Uralan Elista in an exhibition tournament in 2000. But even by Fifa's count, he is the goalkeeper with the most goals ever scored.

São Paulo had gone 11 games since 2007 without beating Corinthians, but their keeper's record strike helped secure victory in a match marred by three red cards.

Corinthians had the defender Alessandro sent off in the 73rd minute and the striker Dentinho, who pulled a goal back in the 67th, for their second yellow card offences. The São Paulo forward Dagoberto, who opened the scoring just before half-time, was also shown a red card after a second booking in the 68th.

São Paulo are now second in the Paulista state championship standings, ahead of Corinthians on goal difference. Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras are one point ahead at the top.
