Alexjc
Just saw pictures of the devestated former 1974 Commonwealth Games main stadium, QEII Park. The track has been destroyed but the worst damage is to the main pool which was already going under repair from the initial September quake. The iconic facility has also has major structual damage and is now closed to everybody except engineers.

mattygs
A report an hour ago said that full structural checks to the complex had not yet taken place, there is some pretty major liquifaction of the stadium pitch though. Apparently it is on a lockdown until it can be checked, don't think it is set for being bowled down though.
4gamesandcounting
Such a shame. And it just held a very successful Paralympic World Championships too :-(
Alexjc
Such a legendary place, I hope some kind of rebuild happens...FIFA has just given the 2015 U20WC to New Zealand!!! QEII has always been Football's Christchurch home!
mattygs
It has indeed, although you'd have to say AMI would be the frontrunner to get the Christchurch Games of the U-20s, would look amazing. In any case, the venue as a whole (qe2 park) must be repaired.
Alexjc
Well it looks like QEII Stadium is to be demolished as the ground beneath is simply too unstable. Sad really, this was NZs first attempt to build a modern first class sports facility...and it was. Christchurch Earthquake Reconstruction Authority (CERA) is recommending a new multisport facility be built near Addington and even recommends that AMI Stadium be demolished as well. Ikarus360
^^ Thats really sad news...It's too bad to see such an important stadium for NZ sport to go, and I was really hoping the stadium could be repaired, but it seems that won't be the case. If anyone's interested, you can revive the 1974 CWG through NZ On Line, right here: http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/games-74-1974 The entire documentary is avalaible to watch for free. baron-pierreIV
Time to build a brand new, all-weather $10.5 billion dollar facility to HOST every event in the world!!
Alexjc
Time to build a brand new, all-weather $10.5 billion dollar facility to HOST every event in the world!! ...Ha I wish it would be so Baron.. But on the serious side, at least a billion should cover it, and that would include a 50k pax oval stadium, a smaller stadium with athletics track two olympic pools, a dive tank, tennis courts etc.
micheal_warren
Time to build a brand new, all-weather $10.5 billion dollar facility to HOST every event in the world!! Sounds good! Now to find the funding
Alexjc
Sounds good! Now to find the funding For what it's worth, Christchurch should build a 'Harbantota' style like sports precinct...This would actually work as it's not Auckland...but of course the main stadium would be a Rugby/Cricket oval, capiable of plonking down a running track if Chc ever wants to host the CWGs or YOSGs in the distant future. With a near clean slate to rebuild, what an example...We just have to drill for oil to pay for it!
Sir Rols
With a near clean slate to rebuild, what an example...We just have to drill for oil to pay for it! You can always ask the Chinese if they need a South Pacific naval base!

Alexjc
Christchurch City Council have released it's Draft Plan for the 'new' Christchurch. Included is a brand new full Olympic Aquatics centre near AMI Stadium with a brand new Events/Conference centre built nearby. This is the final death knell for QEII Park. It will focus sports within the revamped city area. A new lightrail link will join it all together. A possible future CWGs bid prehaps?
Brekkie Boy
Indeed the need to rebuild surely makes a games bid a real possibility.
