For everybody except Eeyore, this seems to be the complete list of 17-minute slices of the above-mentioned 2000 "Sidney Paralimpic" OC:

Re: Sheffield 91, I've found a fair few pics at a site called picturesheffield.com, of which I think this is the most interesting.

https://www.hpacde.org.uk/picturesheffield/jpgh_sheffield/s24740.jpg

It looks like a early version of pandemonium from London 2012, does anyone here have a vid or even just remember this?

BTW, after seeing what Shenzhen & Kazan did, it's fair to say that these games have come on a bit

Wow - that could be a rehearsal for 2012's Pandemonium.

Sheffield was a classic example of a city which achieved world importance early in the Industrial Revolution, thanks to its metalworking industries (making those Olympic Rings for real would have been easy-peasy), then lost almost everything once cheap alternatives to its products became available. The women with headscarves are "buffer girls" putting the shine on small products such as cutlery (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/clydehouse/4138699435/ ).

The root of Sheffield's problems with the 1991 "World Student Games" was the failure to secure TV coverage; which inevitably meant it was impossible to attract meaningful sponsorship. For a discussion on the Games, with a tantalising mention of an OC video, see http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-276574.html .

I know of Sheffield's history in the industrial revolution, it's not called the Steel City for nothing. What struck me was the similarities between that picture & the pics from London. It's what the OC would've been like if London had hosted the Olympics in around 1984.

Well, except that when the time came to choose a creative team for the 1984 Olympics, Cats was the latest and greatest ...

Don't know if this has been posted before, but a compilation vid of the OC of the 2005 Med games in Almeria, Spain, from La Fura dels Baus.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/uTfKrzzc4-Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Looks quite spectacular for a small event in a very small city.

Edit: oh s**t, the embedding hasn't worked for some reason, here's the link:

^^ I saw the video some time ago. Fura dels Baus did a great job with this fantastic opening ceremony (much better than the Almeria one. Mersin was ok but I feel they abused too much of projections). Since they're based in Catalonia I guess they will be hired again for 2017 since Tarragona will host the next edition of the games.

I also posted a Med Games related vid yesterday on my new account (I can't access Ikarus361 anymore for a strange reason so i'll be using that one from now on to upload stuff) , a small excerpt of the 1979 Mediterranean Games Opening Ceremony, in Split, Yugoslavia (today Croatia)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGeNP4jOo_U

It seems the ceremony was kind of influenced in Montreal 1976 performances. I'm kinda interested on finding a full version of this and the 1984 opening of Sarajevo '84.

PS: The embeeded videos seem not to be working. o.O how can I fix this issue?

*much better than the Pescara one (sorry for the mistake)

Not sure where to put this, appears to be a mock OC for a fantasy Olympics in Amsterdam, could be a good basis for one of our trusty GB-comps:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzNMy1mMnWc

It's actually a very good stop-motion, PowerPoint/slide show/storyboard of some ceremony-obsessed Dutch fan as to what he thinks a future Amsterdam Olympics will feature. He's made scale models, uses lots of toy horses and toy Roman soldiers, maquettes, etc., --even a lit up stadium at night, a stunt card section a la Moscow 1980, and OMG!, even a chariot race!!

He's got a great underwater sequence a la Sydney; of course, a cauldron-lighting moment when a Seattle Space Needle-type cauldron appears out of nowhere and then gets lit. And best of all is a line in his closing credits: No toy horses were harmed!!:lol:

Gotta give him A-1 kudos for effort alone!

Found this new excerpt of Sarajevo 1984 Closing Ceremony. You can see Calgary 1988 mascots in the end.

Also, Sarajevo 1984 fanfare at the opening ceremony (the rest of the video from where I found this pretty much had already seen material in Youtube so I didn't posted it)

Got a very nice reply from that guy who made the "mock" Amsterdam ceremonies...which I want to share with you guys here:

Dear Myles,

i want to thank you for your kind words about my rendering of how the opening ceremonie of olympic games in amsterdam would look like, if i were the director. It is my lifelong dream of designing the main stadiums and the opening and closing ceremonies of such an event (did you notice my stadium has the look of a giant watch? In athletics its all about time...) Sadly, the gouvernement of the netherlands, where i live, isnt really interested in organising the games(they fear it will cost too much, they have the small vision of a little shopkeeper...), so i dont get my hopes up...

i was already aware of your book, because i have 2 copies of it at home, just in case one falls apart for reading it too much;i am a bit obsessed by opening and closing ceremonies, they are in my opinion like a religious experience(its not that crazy, the olympics started as a religious festival honouring Zeus, after all) . I have also made a little movie, about 14 minutes, on my view of a closing ceremonie, i dont know if you would like to watch that. But for now i just wanted to thank you for spending half an hour of your time watching my work.

i do not know if the book has a big enough audience interested in this kind of stuff to justify the work that would go into it, but maybe it would be interesting to write a sequel about the opening ceremonies of other events, like for instance the worldcup football, (argentina 1978 and spain 1982,2000 men forming a dove once drawn by picasso , were quite nice, as was usa 1994), rugby, asian games,( seoul1986 was a great dress rehearsal for 1988,maybe even better than the real olympic opening), panamerican games, (havana1991 :cuba did a great job at their opening, considering its such a small country), the commonwealth games(some of the best opening ceremonies of that games were brisbane 1982,,edinburough1986(enormous scottish flag formed by 2500 children)and kuala lumpur 1998), goodwill games, those games initiated by ted turner with that great first edition opening in 1986 in moskou, second edition seattle 1990 was nice too, maybe even the halftime shows superbowl, and dont forget the arirang mass games of the north koreans(although they do every year the same thing , its still the biggest event in the entire world, as i am sure you know, with an estimated number of participants of at least 100.000 people) . Its just a thought.

With friendly regards

So I was right. He is a "ceremony-obsessed" person in his very own words. It is a very infectious disease. And he owns NOT one, but TWO copies of my book!! A very special, kindred spirit indeed! Bless his heart!! ;)

I'm sure that owning your book won your high regard! You should encourage him to join the crowd here - sounds like he'd fit in well!

Interesting that he holds the 1982 and 1986 CwG openings as the best. Personally - I'd say Auckland, Manchester and Melbourne have been my favourites. KL and Delhi were pretty solid efforts too. The 80s ceremonies were a bit too naff for me. Matilda just gives me huge amounts of cultural cringe and a fear 2018 might channel 1982 in their concept.

  • 2 weeks later...

Don't know--or think if not forgot--if the BBC showed this as part of the broadcast. TF1 showed a nice portion of the lush, green agrarian-set English ground at the Olympic Stadium already uploaded by me. The Canadian Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium wasn't even permitted to show the field when the Opening Ceremony broadcast first came on the air--even with the field model unvieled weeks before. But I think I found the best coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony Pre-Show. From a fan. Not fully complete but close. Doubt that the whole world was watching it since a lot of broadcasters often ignore this. Comedian Curtis Walker and Touch were the emcees with a cameo by the RAF Red Arrow jets flying overhead. Shortened music. Danny Boyle, the man behind the London OC, comes in and makes a brief speech. Olympic/Paralympic Truce

A short film played before the Opening Ceremony in London during the pre-show called International Inspiration about the legacy planned long after the Games were over to inspire young people through sport

Based on watching the world IOC feed, OBSL never showed it either.

We all seen Guardian put up portions of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Opening Ceremonies from the CBC broadcast and were sadly since deleted by him because of the constant legal threats heaped upon him but some portions are recovered. Now the Atlanta Parade of Nations on CBC--taken from CBC Newsworld--is back but from a different person. He mixed the CBC's broadcast with that from Chile's Canal 13 to fill in the nations ommitted during the former's commercial breaks but set to New Age music (just like in the Parade of Nations here like with Yanni's score heard) due to the poor audio quality and work it into synch. Overall, the video quality is poor but at least we get to see it here again.

Part 1: Greece, Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, American Samoa, Andorra, Angola, Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijian, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belguim, Benin, Bermuda, Bhutan, Bolivia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2eJFVecYfY

Part 2: Cameroon, Canada (why didn't CBC show some of the Canadian athletes taking photos of themselves at the Olympic flagpole like NBC did is beyond me), Cape Verde, Cayman Islands, Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, The Comoros, Congo, Cook Islands, Costa Rica, Cote D'Ivorie, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Djibouti, Dominica, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. It's around between Congo and the Cook Islands we start to see the NBC portions used now, borrowed from julius, to fill the nations in when even UC TV13 apparently couldn't get them and again at the very end with Ecuador--you'll spot this when NBC's cameras show the teams from the lower part of the ramp and the track. But the CBC does show some scenes of athletes marching at the track themselves but not much.
