Durban Sandshark 155
Surely this was shown before. The well-known Lionel Richie special Olympic edition of "All Night Long" at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Closing Ceremony. Yeah, I too seen this on You Tube; I'm still struggling to find where's Cuba Gooding Jr. popping and locking as one of the breakdancers in the video. But I never saw it live on ABC. This video has commentary coming not from ABC (that would be Jim McKay and Peter Jennings) but, I strongly think, the CBC. We'll find out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tzxJi3h2LQ Finally, somebody uploaded the actual Seven Network's signing off to the 2000 Closing Ceremony and its coverage of one of the greatest games ever (and monster ratings for 7 in Australia) with Bruce McAveney's closing thoughts and thanks and the montage of moments with credits like NBC and CBC did, after all the fireworks were done in Sydney from Homebush to the CBD/North Sydney to officially close them. The music is credited to Sarah Brightman and (I think) Andrea Boccelli with the London Symphony Orchestra supplying the music. Too bad we will never see an actual DVD to this like with the OC. Oztv Heritage is the person to thank; we salute you!
Sir Rols 1902
Maybe it's because so much time has passed - usually by the end of a games I'm overdosed on such sugary TV montages - but this brought a fond lump to my throat watching it.

Apparently he re-uploaded it. Was it this video by gratacap1? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2EdRTHpAeU And that user uploaded the video a second time. Apparently he's still new to YouTube. So in case that he takes the video behind the aforementioned link down, here's the second link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MVA9fnJRm0 But if you are referring to this video, Ikarus: I think that video was taken at the very end of the closing ceremony, thus after the protocolary segments. Because you see the Soviet flag already hoisted beside the Canadian flag (shortly before the two minute mark) and "Farewell Montreal - 'Till We Meet in Moscow" on the jumbotron around 3:45. The hired 300 break-dancers; and he was a nobody then...so I doubt that he would even merit a close-up. You're right. They ALL were. Him being in the CC is often well-told about him as Cuba's first brush with fame (aside from being the son of The Main Ingredient's lead singer Cuba Sr.). Unless he himself points out where he is in the footage in his TV appearances (and I don't think even he could), it will be a struggle and a time-waster to seek him there; they seemed to be all dressed and look the same. As far as Montreal is concerned, this was first time in Australian and Kiwi TV history the Summer Olympics were shown in color down there. Full color TV transmission hit Australia in 1975 just before the big Gough Whitlam Government ouster in Canberra. Argentina hadn't got color TV yet. Perhaps Brazil did at that time. Also since Montreal, we seen nowdays at the CC that we will see in exact wording "Goodbye from ____. See you in ____." at the end. More formal protocol from the IOC? And quite frankly, I haven't seen yet that all recent closing ceremonies used the same wording.

Ikarus360 602
To anyone interested, the 2005 and 2009 ceremonies of the World Games were uploaded by the official World Games account in Youtube
Kenadian 300
Not sure if this has ever been posted on Gamesbids before, but I give you...the Closing Ceremony of the Games of the XXI Olympiad, Montreal 1976! I don't think this is complete and the sound from this video is not from the original airing (from the official soundtrack for the Games) but this is the most complete viewing I've ever seen of the Montreal closer. The uploader has other vids from the '76 Games. Part 1 http://youtu.be/zTpxXvA35a4 Part 2 http://youtu.be/4k7sakoJDvs Part 3 http://youtu.be/pM440A9gAX0 Part 4 (actual sound from the flag being lowered) http://youtu.be/JOEC-8GQox0 Part 5 or 6? http://youtu.be/EycucvS6AfY Final http://youtu.be/mdYPFK0vsoo And sorry...I'm having some difficulty posting the last four parts (but will try and fix this). Ikarus360 602
^^ Omg, thank you so much Kenadian! I've been looking for this forever! Also i'm surprised at how the audio sounds so clean (but it seems like it was edited)
Olympian2004 511
Not to forget that the same YouTube user also uploaded Montreal's opening ceremony, starting with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lGPPNUvmXQ It's also footage that is mostly superimposed by music from the official soundtrack. But it seems to have the parade of nations (at least in visual) entirety, as opposed to the footage that was posted by that opening ceremony web encyclopedia guy a couple of months ago. Ikarus360 602
^^ Yup, the full parade of nations is uploaded this time. I didn't knew Venezuela delegation paraded with the national costume (The Liqui-Liqui) They attempted to do a modern version of the outfit for the 2012 olympics opening (although honestly I liked the one from 1976 more)
Kenadian 300
In the first video I posted above of the Montreal closer...at about the 1:15 mark in the 'green' ring, lower right...is that the infamous streaker?
baron-pierreIV 1693
In the first video I posted above of the Montreal closer...at about the 1:15 mark in the 'green' ring, lower right...is that the infamous streaker? Yes, he was way ahead of the cops. The camera shows he had already penetrated the 'green' ring. Then at about 1:22, he moved on to the 'red' ring where they caught up with him. Kudos to the gals for not being distracted and keeping in performance mode. The infamous Michel le Duc.
Durban Sandshark 155
Claude Simard, the new YouTube poster is currently now uploading more miniature parts of the Montreal Opening Ceremony. Apparently, he realized he skipped some countries in uploading the clips, particularly in the P-T part following Panama and then going back with the late Ts like Turkey. He must've realized those missing nations. Eventually, he'll learn to make a more lengthy piece, we hope. Since many of the nations are it that I've seen ending with Canada, I'll focus on the missing ones I thought. Part of me wishes the sound of the venue was kept instead of superimposing the Montreal soundtrack score. Panama (already covered), Paraguay, Perou, Pays-Bas (The Netherlands), Philippines, Pologne, Portio Rico, and Portugal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqcvMDHSVBM Republique-Democratique-Allemande, RDP Coree, Roumanie, Saint-Marin, Senegal, Singapour, and Suede http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbzc8ZrGQ-Q The East Germans were wearing the same Opening Ceremony outfits they wore four years later in Moscow. We hope Balanced Australia will eventually return to making the Moscow Opening Ceremony and get to the Closing one too. Last time he was on it was at Part 7. Hopefully, he's using this time to acquire new footage to complete the OC in the Parade of Nations. I don't know when will we ever get to see the LA 1984 version in full... Durban Sandshark 155
Suede, Suisse, Swaziland, Tchoslovaquie, Thailandie, Trinidad et Tobago, and Tunisie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FyFRLAXc8g Tunisie, Turquie, URSS, Uruguay, Venezuela, Iles Veirges, Yuogoslavie, and a little bit of Canada http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-z3N3Loino I'm thinking this was recorded off of either the CBC or Radio-Canada. If the guy is French, I would say Antenne 2, now France 2, if it isn't TF1. But any evidence of the language is obscured by the superimposing of the soundtrack score. Durban Sandshark 155
Just the Canadians marching last as hosts with Abby Hoffmann leading the way as then-PM Pierre Elliott Tradeau and his wife stands and applauds. About to embark on a dubious distinction of not winning gold as hosts until Vancouver redeemed them in 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aeys-Kn34w0 Queen Elizabeth II declares open the Montreal Olympics. Durban Sandshark 155
Olympic flag being raised, the Olympic Hymn, and the German folk dancing from Munich at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Note the Antwerp Olympic flag about to be passed to legendary mayor Jean Drapeau coming in at 0:55 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V23WWjZpvDw More German folk dancing, if not from Quebec http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69AhqjEK9S4
Durban Sandshark 155
Yes, it's actually all German in of them. Now the attention goes to the white-clad all-female Olympic Rings dancers enter doing their thing. One of my favorite parts in the Montreal ceremony as they form the rings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioM38UnQ4SI The all-female Olympic Rings dancers, the firing of the cannons outside Olympic Stadium, the releasing of the doves, and Stephane Prefontaine and Sandra Henderson entering the stadium with the torch to light it representing French and English Canada (as well as male and female) united. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXjU1RCCPf4
Durban Sandshark 155
Admiring the Olympic flame in all of its glow--it even has its own theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq3QqHPJHFc Athletes and coaches leave Olympic Stadium as the Opening Ceremony concludes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3CheF23Vm8 Apparently Claude Simard didn't want Roger Rousseau"s (COJO) and Lord Killanin's speeches in his videos. Nor do we see the oaths from Pierre St.-Jean and Maurice Fauget. That's a shame. Perhaps he wants to focus on the artistics and the Parade of Nations.
Durban Sandshark 155
One thing I forgot to add was that Cameroon, Egypt, Swaziland, Guyana, Mali, Moroco, and Tunisia all marched but later withdrew in belated support of the Congo-led boycott over New Zealand's All-Blacks rugby touring South Africa. Of those nations, Cameroon, Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia did actually compete from 18-20 but later withdrew. The 80 all-white clad female dance troupe represented the 80th anniversary of the modern Olympics or its revival that held those crates filled with doves to be released and ribbons in the five Olympic colors. The Olympic flag was carried by ten people--eight men and four women to represent the 10 provinces and 2 territories at the time--no Nunavut yet. I was right initially, there WERE Quebec folk dancers. Also, where was the Youth of Canada and their ribbons and flags and the O Canada rendition?
baron-pierreIV 1693
It was all so tame and modest back then. Now, if the collapsing roof was available then; wouldn't it have been grand if the curtain lifted and then the flame was lit at the cauldron on top of the leaning tower?? That would have been an incomparable lighting m.o.!!
Durban Sandshark 155
It was all so tame and modest back then. Now, if the collapsing roof was available then; wouldn't it have been grand if the curtain lifted and then the flame was lit at the cauldron on top of the leaning tower?? That would have been an incomparable lighting m.o.!! You should know, Myles. After all, you write a great book about the Opening Ceremonies. Such a tactic like that with the roof and the flame could've been memorable. But I think people would prefer the actual process of the lighting instead of being it already there. What was interesting is the fact, as you see on the videos, the Olympic Stadium wasn't even fully complete when the Olympic started (look at the roof on the aerial shots, for one thing)--that was actually worse than what transpired with Athens, when you heard about all the constant worries whether the venues would be complete. Yes, that Montreal OC was the last of its era, where formalities and protocol were more of the order of the day with simplicities and lower budgets. But looking at it now, there was a charm to Montreal's IMO. Nowdays, artistry, theatrics, informalities (we now see how more dressed down the athletes, trainers, and coaches are in the Parade of Nations these days), and national culture emphasis rule the ceremonies. In the earlier part of this current era of the OCs, politics surely played a part. .
