Yet again an Australian Winter Olympian has shown we punch well above our weight in the ice and snow sports:

Alex Pullin wins snowboard cross world title

From: The Australian

SNOWBOARDER Alex Pullin became Australia's newest world champion with a win in La Molina, Spain, last night.

Nicknamed "Chumpy", the 23-year-old from Mansfield, Victoria, snatched the biggest win of his career in the snowboard cross world championship final, defeating dual Olympic gold medallist Seth Wescott and Nate Holland, both from the United States.

Pullin, who qualified for the finals with the fourth fastest time, was close to flawless as he progressed through the round of 32, quarter-finals and semi-finals, before capturing the title in a gripping final.

For those of you who remember Chumpy qualified fastest in Vancouver for the final of the snowboard cross however he came a gutzer and finished out of the medals. Looks like we might have a decent chance 3 years from now in Sochi for yet more gold :)

Holly Crawford just picked up the Women's Halfpipe Snowboard World Championship in la Molin, following up Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin's Snowboard Cross win. Brilliant start to the year from Aussie winter sportsmen and women!

Expect none of the top Americans were in the field and neither was the Finnish silver medalist from last year.

The Winter X-Games are a far better gage of where people are at in the world of snowboard cross and halfpipe than the FIS events.
