Eleven sports are set to be held at the first ever Beach Games among South Asian Federation countries to be held in Hambantota in August this year. The likely sports are volleyball, netball, basketball, soccer, body building, kabaddi, swimming, sailing, cricket, triathlon and handball. They could be reduced depending on the sports practised by the countries involved.

The organising committee led by Minister Dilan Perera along with the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage met the officials from these associations to discuss the possibility of fielding teams in these sports.

There should be at least four teams for each event to be conducted, and each association was told to begin training at suitable venues in the shortest possible period.

The associations were assured by minister Perera that finances will be provided during the training period and the upkeep of pools. The associations also wanted permission to get down foreign coaches if there is a possibility. The associations were asked to give their report by Friday to make a feasibility study for its progress.

The Organising Committee opened a new Secretariat at the Ministry of Sports to streamline the work needed to make the Games a big success. The Minister of Sports also appointed various committees and sub committees to begin work.

The launch of the logo will be held on January 20 in Galle. The delegates from all South Asian countries will be invited to hold comprehensive discussions and decide on the disciplines to be held.

As triathlon involves three sports disciplines such as swimming, cycling and running the associations of these sports attended the meeting at the Ministry of Sports yesterday. Major General Palitha Fernando said that triathlon was held in Sri Lanka only once and this sport needed more promotion and publicity. He also suggested that the best athlete to represent this sport is a cyclist who can do a little bit of swimming.DM

Hambantota next ‘hot’ investment spot

By Duruthu Edirimuni Chandrasekera

Both local and foreign investors have the ‘hots’ for Hambantota and are scooting sites for mega leisure, manufacturing and other such projects, according to government sources.

“Dubai-based hotel chain Indigo has expressed interest in a 100-acre land in Hambantota for a mega hotel project, following the deal for a similar project by the Hong Kong based Shangri-La Group in Hambantota,” a source told the Business Times. Shangri-La estimates its luxury hotel is worth over US$ 100 million and this will be their second such project after they decided to build an up market property at Colombo’s army headquarters in a deal that was sealed last month.

The source said that Indigo is scouting land at the moment in Hambantota and interested in beachfront properties. “No sooner the land is finalised they plan to send the project proposal,” he added. He said that some multinationals are also mulling large manufacturing plants in Hambantota. “These are pertaining to diverse industries and will be large scale projects,” he added.

He also said that there are many Chinese hoteliers interested in essentially budget hotels to be put up in Hambantota as well as Colombo. “They see Hambantota as a busy hub when all the proposed projects materialize and want to be ready for the boom,” he added. He said that many Indian chains such as the Taj Group, Chennai-based Asiana Hotels Pvt Ltd and the budget hotels group, the Duet Hotels are interested in some lands down D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha at Colombo 10. The Pan Pacific Hotels Group, which is Singapore-based and the European Accor Hotels, operating in 90 countries have also initiated plans of ‘ideally’ joint venture partnerships with local hotels.

You have to laugh when the Sports minister suggests that to have an entrant in the triathlon the Sri Lankans need to find 'a cyclist who can swim a bit' :D :D

While they're at it why not find a Chinese businessman who can build a bit, a braggart bid supporter who can use a keyboard a bit and a president and ruling family who can use firearms a bit.

Hambonetotebag 2018; the bid that uses fantasy a bit :)

scotguy the website for beach games is still not launched. it will come up soon.

The mascot looks different

''The salu paliya is one of 18 healing rituals or sanni yakuna, based on the belief that certain sicknesses of body and mind are due to the malevolent influences of demons and can be cured by driving out the demon responsible for such affliction, through ritualistic dancing. The salu paliya is one of twelve palis or dance themes that herald the ritual for the exorcist's arrival.''

This is one part of traditional dancing in the south this devil dance bring joy and relief to people.the traditional devil dancer looks to be the mascot.

I think I've found the inspiration:

calm down machan read the post carefully, we are not living in a desert to take inspiration from a fictional boy wizard movie :)

Their are various other masks which has their unique drum beat and purpose.

i can arrange a special tovil for Lugivercotti (eubias65,cattlecat) and armoronis when they come to Sri Lanka for the CWG in 2018.The demon in charge of pissu sanniya will be have to brought to do a special ritual with a great beat.im confident the demon could bring them back to normal. :)

Nice slogan. Logo could do without two or three of the elements in it though.

Like the slogan. With the logo i love the writing but i would take away the people and palm trees and make the sun bigger and more central

The logo i think would be nice when its put up in the beaches ,visible. the organizers may go for a festival type atmosphere

like this one which was in 2009 http://www.hikkafest.com/

This thread is turning into one sick joke.

The logo is lousy by +2010 standards, the mascot is hideous and the Games don't even have a website. I can't even (easily) find out where the Games would be staged, when, at what venues and where I can buy tickets or book hotels.

What a sham.
