Bucharest mayor Oprescu wants Romania to host 2020 Olympic Games

Bucharest hosting the 2020 Olympic Games in Bucharest would attract many investors and the move is backed by citizens, said the general mayor of Romania’s capital Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu. He said 93 percent of 3,200 Romanians polled over the phone said the initiative would be beneficial for the city. ”In Bucharest, 85 percent of citizens back the initiative. The poll was conducted over the phone and grilled 3,700 people in Bucharest and 3,200 across the country,” Oprescu said on Realitatea TV.

According to the mayor, organizing the 2020 Olympics in Bucharest would be great in terms of economic and image benefits for the country.

“I’ve already started making lists of athletes with great results in previous Olympics who live abroad,” Oprescu said, adding he is not considering raising local taxes and he has instead started looking to enhance lobbying efforts.

The next Olympic Games will be hosted by London in 2012, by Sochi/Russia in 2014, Rio de Janeiro in 2016. The bidding phase for choosing the Olympic Games hosts starts nine years prior to the actual event. The operational planning for the event starts five and a half years before the event, while the Operational Readiness Planning starts three and a half years before the games.

Intriguing, insofar as highly reminiscent of the talk about Budapest with some synchronicities with Olympic history and the move to bring the SOGs somewhere between the Danube and the Dneister. Sad to say the Rumanian's have no chance, particularly considering there best proponent (Alexandre Sipercu) has been dead for almost 10 years. Sipercu's legacy of convincing Ceaucescu to send the team to LA in 84 plus his strong presence in the IOC exec board under the Wily Old Falangist would have been possibly a boon to a Bucharest bid in say 1992. This talk of a 2020 bid however is pure bumph, no doubt fuelled by the mayor's own political (and possibly business) agenda.

Perhaps we need a ex-Warsaw Pact thread in future games :)

Well, that was over before it began:

Bucharest will not host the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 / General counsellors rejected the project

17 decembrie 2010

Bucharest city hall general counsellors rejected on Friday the draft project regarding Bucharest's candidacy to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. After half an hour of debates, in which counsellors opinionated that the project is futuristic, unachievable, their vote rejected the project.

22 votes were in favor, 8 were against and another 20 abstained. To be adopted, the project needed 28 votes. Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu launched in August the idea to organize the 2020 Summer Olympics in Bucharest.

According to the project, the games would have generated a major impulse for the Romanian economy, a development of infrastructure and tourism and the creation of new jobs.

Intriguing to see 20 abstentions in the vote...that's a bucket load of wind-sniffers not willing to commit one way or the other.

And they would have only needed six of those 20 to proceed.

Fair enough, though. If they were ever serious, it would need to be a long term plan.

Lets face it Rols, it doesn't exactly set the soul on fire, a bid from Bucharest. Perhaps the city councillors have more pressing issues to hand and have listened to that strange thing called reason (often ignored in cities with no real reason to bid).
