2020 Olympics short list

Triffle

By "in and around" I mean either at the Opera has (plazas) or within TV shot of the Opera House and the bridge. Could we throw in sailing as well (I can't recall the exact location).

Either way, my point remains the same. Having more than a handful of events in parts of the ancient city, inside ancient venues and amongst ruins simply degrades the whole purpose of having events in those locations in the first place. I'd like to see full use made of the existing Olympic precinct, one or two different "ancient" or landmark sites and the rest in purpose built clusters (or cluster) somewhere else in the city.

Sailing was berthed at Rushcutters Bay which is quite some distance from the Opera House. But I do agree with your salient point which is that the focus of venues shouldn't be placing events in ancient/historic/iconic structures.

Rei, regarding beach volleyball any reason why that is in the old city? Is it because there is a suitable location on the Tiber banks? Ditto equestrian.

Dont' know. The blueprints put beach volley in Circo Massimo, the huge rustic oval which in ancient times hosted chariots races and today serves as stage for concerts and big events.

The equestrians are set in Piazza di Siena which is an exclusive ippodrome inside Villa Borghese, the biggest park of Rome.

As for the Caracallan Baths, why not use them again?

Caracalla was on of the most vivid icons of the '60 games. Reuse it and you'll risk a big dejavu and wouldn't help Rome's something new. :D

In any event, Rome would be foolish only to try and sell it's historical image. It's one that many tourists of the world have already experienced. Rome will need something new to appeal to the IOC. London was faced with a similar predicament with 2012. Yes its an amazing city but a lot of the obvious features they could have sold to the IOC have been combed over time after time already. Selling a new message to the IOC, while being respectful of its amazing history will be the real challenge of a Roman bid.

Play to a NEW strength not to the same old stereotypes

I couldn't agree more. They need to reinvent themself by serving the right amount of "old stuff" :D . Otherwise, they would look fools.

Anyway, as I previously reminded, the only disciplines planned in the core of the city are bvolley and the equestrians and only one of these is a "ruin". So far, looking at the present plans, the historical is quite marginal.

What kind of use will the existing Olympic stadium, pool, arena and tennis stadiums get do we suspect?

Hi everyone, I just registered after some years just lurking the forum

I am from Italy and I am of course interested into Rome bid for 2020 SOG

One preparatory piece of news which is very important for anybody that knows the reality of Italy ( a country where Rome plays a much smaller role than most european capitals play in their countries).

Today - following the renounciation of Alemanno (major of Rome) to host a F1 grandprix that risked to cancel the historical Milan's F1 GP (raced in Monza in Milan AM), the Milan city administration declared they full back Rome2020 bid.

This is quite unusual for two cities - Rome and Milan - which are usually at each other throat and a very good omen

Same compound as 1960. I hope Princepessa Luciana Pignatelli will be there again!!

Where will rowing be? Lake Albano again?

Where else?

Welcome. Yes, things seem to be turning along well from the potential Rome bid so far. They seem to be the clear front runner (at least from Europe) at this stage and I hope they do well. Of the likely bids thus far (Rome, Durban, Tokyo), they're probably my preference. But there is a long way to go, many bids that may have not yet been announced and a lot that can change.

Ciao 2015 :)

Nice to see someone here alongside Rei to give us more info on Rome 2020. Now all we need is a Japanese contributor from Tokyo/Hiroshima and we can start warming up the forum threads. Question is, will there be the same sparks we had during the London Vs Paris Vs Madrid Vs NY2012 contest or the still smouldering fires of Rio Vs Madrid vs Chicago for 2016?

Bona fortuna Roma!

Of course there will. The months leading up to vote time always becomes a take-no-prisoners battle zone here.

Especially when there is an identified front-runner and a clear underdog

2012: Paris (FR) - London (UD)

2016: Chicago - Rio

2020: Rome - Durban

I predict an all inclusive **** storm once a Durban bid begins to materialise. That's not to say it will win, but Durban will definitely spice everything up.

Ah, but there was a certain piquancy to those heady clashes between the Frogs and the Poms...truly memorable  Perhaps Rafa and Dysan need to go really berko to match the undoubted passion our Italian amici will bring to decision time 2013. :)

Perhaps our Hambantotan friends should drop their pesky Commonwealth Games bid and join in the 2020 race. They're, of course, easily capable of hosting major international events in a tiny fishing village with a port half the size of Geelong's.

Can we also ask for JJ and Abuja? Then the shite will really hit the fan.

Actually imagine the scenario if the 2022 CGs is between Abooboo and Hambonetonedeaf...that thread would literally melt processors and lead to online death threats :P

As fecal weather incidents go the Durban candidacy seems to have an almost gentlemanly atmosphere contrasted with those lingering deluges of bile and loathing that we still see sometimes in the Rio threads. I guess as almost all the mad French fans retreated (quelle surprise) after the 2012 decision even Annecy's bid discussion has been civilized :)

I think I've found myself a new signature!

I'm hoping interest from Durban will trigger some kind of interest from other African cities. I'm not suggesting Abuja should be bidding in any way but it would be great to see the continent engage more with the Games. Especially if a nation could come up with a smaller scale, lower cost plan that fitted their capabilities and the needs of the IOC.

Some people seem to forget just how far a lot of African nations (particularly the cities) have come in the past decade or two. Of course, no city outside of South Africa stands a chance of winning, but it would be great to see some cities get the ball rolling.

Tunis and Cairo being the obvious examples.

Glad to be of service Aronious :)

How about we start a Facebook campaign with the help of Jeremy's design group and gamesSL's informed posts for a Windhoek 2020 campaign? Get Fatixxx and Scotguy to co-write the bid book and then ask Jim8675309 to work out the infrastructure plans. Finish it off with JimJones as CEO and Arush as village coordinator et voila...les jeux Olympiques d'Afrique avec des Namibia 2020 :D

Oops almost forgot to include Baron as ceremonies coordinator and OTO as NOC assistant for Brazil.

Many thanks to everyone for the welcome!

I am not so sure we italians will make a decent source of fights. We Italians tend to give for granted we will loose just to turn happy if we don't :)

Lol why should it? Simply because we are "new territory"?

Can you imagine?

Jim would just build 5 star hotels and a massive metro that goes everywhere.

I am sure the IOC would be pleased.

I will be interested to see who puts there hand up. Maybe those crazy Kazakhs will put Astana forward to go along with Baku. Or how about Ouagadougou and add in a Marrakesh and you got Africa covered. Delhi and Tokyo would add some flavour and the Chinese coming early with a Shanghai bid. Some delusional Mexicans with Guadalajara and some stoned Canadians and Toronto. Finish it off with the gluttons from Madrid and Paris, add in some Russians with St. Petersburg and finally a sprinkle of fascist lovin' with Berlin and Rome and you got the IOC equivalent of WWIII. Oh and bringing up the rear Doha and Abu Dhabi! Arabs like it in the back no?
