No. SOG athletes are capped at 10,500. Besides, 24 soccer teams (m&w) are billeted in the 3 other satellite cities, so how it could be more athletes? I think Rio has just planned a bigger village. They'll probably have media or security forces occupying the extra units.

2 more sports have been added.

There are probably lots of 'extras'...officials, medical staff, upport staff that will try and get a trip to Rio! Who would blame them.

I know a lot of hangers-on came to Sydney for the experience!

It's SOG athletes that are supposedly capped at 10,500. Oh, but officials usually stay in hotels whereas trainers, medical staff were billeted where the COJOs had space for them -- usually at university or college dorms. (For London, there were about 80 equestrian grooms; and they stayed at the Royal Naval College beside the paddocks, together with the a rotating 24-hour staff of 3-4 vets and nurses.) It looks like Rio is projecting for a bigger community when the Games are finished.

Yep, it's simply the case that London's village was smaller. A choice of the respective cities. But also a function of the credit crunch (that's already sounding retro isn't it?) which came just as London was starting to get its construction underway. Our village essentially became a publically funded project when the developer was suddenly unable to get any money from the banks in late 2008, and the village was reduced in size by about a quarter after that.

It was still enormous, eleven blocks of housing, two and a half thousand apartments, but RIo's looks like it's much bigger in scope even than that. Baron's right, that's a choice Rio has made, nothing to do with a few extra athletes or officials.

As I am 94% of the time. ;) Thanks, Rob.

I think more than a few favelas are scheduled for demolition after 2016. Those are probably 3 new samba districts/"schools" right there!!

No, media and referees will be hosted in other villages. Indeed, the referees one is the Athletes Village from the World Military Games and it's already built.

Construction of Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Village 50 per cent complete

Construction of the apartment complex that will become the Olympic and Paralympic Village for the Rio 2016 Games has passed the 50 per cent completion mark. Based in Barra da Tijuca, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, the Village will have capacity for more than 18,000 guests, including athletes and officials. Construction started in July 2012 and the buildings will be finished in the first half of 2016.

“The project is progressing very well and it is exciting to see the Village take shape,” said Rio 2016’s Olympic and Paralympic Village Director, Mario Cilenti. “It is going to be incredible to have the best athletes in the world staying in one place, here in Rio, for the first Olympic and Paralympic Games in South America. We are doing everything to ensure they have the best possible facilities so they can focus all their attention on producing their best performances.”

Seventeen of the 31 buildings in the complex have already been erected and construction will be completed on the remaining 14 towers by the end of this year, with internal finishings to be done in 2015. The next stage will be installing the ‘overlay’ – the process of transforming a future residential complex into the Olympic Village. These works include the construction of a temporary medical centre, cafeteria with space for 5,000 people and gym, among other amenities.

Another challenge is guaranteeing the complete accessibility of the Village for the Paralympic athletes, who will arrive a few days after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games on 21 August 2016. The opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games will take place on 7 September 2016.

“We have two to three days, at most, to carry out the transition from Olympic to Paralympic Village,” Cilenti said. “To do this, everything has to be thought about and built now. There will be around 700 accessible bathrooms, in addition to the common areas, which must meet the needs of not just wheelchair users, but also athletes with a visual impairment and with reduced mobility, amongst others.”

There are currently 6,500 workers involved in the project although this number will rise to 8,000 by the end of the year. They have already used an amount of concrete equivalent to four Maracanã Stadiums.

The 31 buildings will be divided into seven condominiums with a total of 3,604 apartments, 10,160 bedrooms, 10,150 bathrooms and more than 18,000 beds. The total area will be 475,000m² and during the Games, about 10,000 people (staff, contractors and volunteers) will work in the operation of the Village.

“It is as if we are building a large hotel that will host the best athletes in the world, who will come from more than 200 countries to live together for a few glorious weeks in Rio,” said Cilenti.

Giant beds for giant athletes… Rio 2016 tests furniture for Olympic and Paralympic Village Special team of former and current athletes helps ensure the world’s top sports stars will be comfortable in 2016

As the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Village continues to take shape, the process of selecting the furniture that will fill the apartments is in its final phase. From giant basketball players to powerful weightlifters, athletes of all shapes and sizes need to be considered. In order to ensure this is achieved, the organising committee has brought together a team of former and current athletes to test the equipment.

“The Games are all about the athletes and our priority is to meet their needs, so no one is in a better position to tell us what are the best options” said Luiz Gustavo de Almeida, who is heading up the committee’s furniture selection team. “The feedback from the athletes has been excellent, they drew our attention to small details that will make a big difference. The technical assessment they gave us will help us make our final decisions.”

Among the expert testers was judoka Ruan Isquierdo, who won bronze in the 100kg+ event at June’s Pan-American Open in El Salvador. He was pleased that the beds will be 2.17m long – as will be the basketball and volleyball players, traditionally the tallest athletes in the village.

“I tried to look at the furniture from the viewpoint of taller and heavier athletes and I was pleased with all the items,” said Isquierdo. “It’s really good to play a part, no matter how small, in organising the Games and helping make sure there are no hitches. Having somewhere comfortable to relax is one of the most important things for an athlete during competition.”

The testing group also included ex-basketball player and two-time Olympian Paulinho Villas Bôas and two retired swimmers: Flavia Nadalutti, who competed in the Montreal 1976 Games, and Ricardo Prado, who won silver in the 400m medley at Los Angeles 1984 and is chairman of the Rio 2016 Sport Advisory Committee.

They checked out the beds, bedside tables, chairs and cupboards available from pre-approved suppliers. Comfort, bed length and even cupboard door-handle design were among the features the athletes homed in on.

“The Sport Advisory Committee’s job is exactly this: to help organise the Games based on the athletes’ experience,” said Prado. “We have already travelled to various countries throughout the world, carrying our own equipment, and we know what a difference a few details can make.”

The group will be invited for two more consultations before the end of the first quarter of 2015, when purchases for Olympic and Paralympic Village furnishings will be finalised. Orders will be placed for 135,000 chairs, 46,000 tables and 32,000 cupboards, as well as 30,000 beds and bedside tables.

The Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Village, which will accommodate more than 18,000 guests, is scheduled to be completed the first half of 2016. It will cover an area of 475,000m² and consist of 31 buildings divided into seven condominiums, with a total of 3,604 apartments and 10,160 rooms.

The village will be a very good legacy for the upper middle class in Rio... <_<

Not exactly a great legacy for the city.

To explain : Barra da Tijuca is a upper middle class/ middle class district of the city. The Olympic Village, part of the Olympic Park (after the games) and the Golf Course will be places for the cityupper middle class.

* For the city's upper middle class.

The real legacy for the city will be in transport, training centers for sport, tourism and the revitalization of the port area (a very good work).

Rio will be a better place and a real 'marvelous city', but the Olympic Village is not a legacy.
