Sri Lanka to win at least 50 Gold Medals at the 2018 CWG: Cabraal

Sri Lanka is spearheading a two pronged strategy to win the hosting of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Hambantota and also bag at least 50 Gold medals at the competition.

This was stated by the Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal who is heading the 2018 Commonwealth Games candidate city organizing committee.

Cabraal said “We are executing a plan towards achieving these twin goals”

He said if Sri Lanka can host the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Hambantota, it would be a huge advantage to the nation.

According to him the beneficiary sectors would be tourism and sports.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee announced that a program will be launched to train young kids who are in the ages of 13 to 14 at present to compete in the 2018 commonwealth games.

He said “If we start doing it now, within another 8 years results can be achieved”.

A talent management program is on the cards to make the dream a reality, said Cabraal.

Cabraal noted “We want to win at least 50 to 100 medals”.

He was highly confident of doing it.

The Country’s top Monetary Authority went onto say “We will not spend money on a game where others will bag the medals and go away”.

The highest tally of medals Sri Lanka has won in a single Commonwealth games is the 3 medals it won at the concluded Delhi Games.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka has already hired specialized international firms such as UK’s Bell Pottinger to help it submit a successful bid document.

Last week Ajith Nivard Cabraal was in Scotland attending a seminar organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation in relation to the 2018 games.

The bid document to compete for the 2018 games has to be handed over by May this year.

Australia’s Gold Coast city is also competing to win the hosting of the 2018 Games in that part of the world.

50 gold medals!!

This from the same country that couldn't even win 1 legitimate gold medal at the Delhi Dung Heap 2010...and scored a big fat unenvied bugger all ZERO at the 2010 Asian Games. I guess that Cabraal (in his position as Minister for Fantasies, Brain Injuries and Living in Cloud-Cuckoo-Land) thinks that Sri Lanka can zoom past such other giants of world sport as Nauru, Samoa and Cyprus to reach such giddy heights!

That is about as funny as a Rajapaksa statement on fiduciary honesty and human rights. Someone must have put some LSD in the Hambanatota drinking water

is this you ?

Oh the biting wit of satire...you sir are a veritable Juvenal, a Jonathan Swift, a Peter Cook, a Joseph Heller.

Course diddums will probably go crying off to daddy Rajapaksa now coz his negative rating is now at -9....perhaps if you actually asked the Chinese or Cabraal (SL's go to man for keeping the Sr Lankan Visa Account Open With Beijing) you might actually stump up the money to pay for a full membership like some us have.

Or is it all one big Tamil plot hmmmm

True Aronious...very very true. But there is a certain frisson to be had watching the floundering of the Rakapaksa clan members as they struggle to reconcile their moronic postings with the reality of their farcical dud bid.

And we all know that international organizations such as the CGF and MaFIFA have been known to swallow such guff then regret it down the track

FIFA, whatever you think of them, have just come off the back of a mostly very succesful World Cup in a "new" nation. They therefore saw no problem in choosing two more for 2018 and 2022. They were in a confident mood in the lead up to the 2018/22 vote.

The CWGF, by contrast, have just had the bumpiest ride ever with Delhi and the fact that a below par Games is seen as an acheivement given what could have happened shows you the difference. They won't be in a confident frame of mind when they choose the 2018 hosts.

South Africa is in a COMPLETELY different league to Qatar despite their relatively low wealth.

Hi Rob ,i think 2018 CWG nicely fits in to Hambantota. habantota is building to be the next capital of sri lanka the equipment and facilities to build is already on the ground. hambantota is capable of showing something unique. the airports with elephants will need a good start, hambantota port which will give 40% gov income by 2020 has started everything.talking about hambantota port it will be the regional hub in Asia. Sea lines of communication per annum in southern sri lanka is over 100 000 (English channel 100 000), the port project is five months ahead of the schedule.its clear aplan is their like stop beam and stands and put the grass ;) ;) the argument if the bid is serious or not is dead .it would be a disaster to have the CWG again in australia. well the safer option is hambantota in 2018 and probably England in 2022 ( or Canada )and a nation in Africa 2026.

and austalia can host a football world cup in 2038 hmm 2042 yes

^^ Those points are irrelevant, given the mostly farcical nature of Delhi 2010, would they want the Commonwealth Games go to a city with significantly far less? I think not. Sure, you can boast how Sochi had little and it managed to win the 2014 Winter Olympics, but this is different, Sri Lanka's a country without the means to finance all these projects itself, so it's looking at China, who's not part of the Commonwealth to help get them the games, it's purely political, a chance for Chinese companies to have their name printed in all these projects, that aren't really necessary, even if it's supposedly an opportunity for Hambantota and more importantly Sri Lanka to enhance itself in the world stage.

They won't get it, especially now that the Gold Coast can fully commit itself to the Commonwealth Games bid, since we've lost the WC for 2022.

Oh, and I'm sure we'll bid again, for 2030 most likely (stupid FIFA bid rules) we'll present a stronger bid, it'll come to Oz eventually.

Oh and 50 gold medals? 50 medals overall, sure, but GOLD?

good luck for 2030, well i will hopefully be here when sri lanka bid for something bigger.

:)

if u target 50 at least you will get 49 gold B) rather than targeting one and getting nothing

South Asian Beach Games gets off the ground

The inaugural South Asian Beach Games 2011 is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in Hambantota. The arrangements are under way to conduct the events in August.

As a first step in organizing the Games two Working Committee and Organizing Committee and 10 sub Committees were given the task of planning the Games.

The working Committee will be headed by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage while the Organizing Committee is headed by the Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera.

These decisions were taken at the first meeting held last Saturday at a meeting attended by National Olympic Committee Chairman Hemasiri Fernando, member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa and other heads of Sports governing bodies.

The events to be conducted during the games has yet to be finalized but the following disciplines beach volleyball, swimming, beach handball, beach kabaddi, netball, wind surfing, rugger, body building, football and cricket are listed for the games.

This is what sri lanka is doing to win the bid

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending FIFA, just drawing a contrast between how FIFA must have felt during the 2018/22 vote, and how the CWGF will feel during the 2018 vote.

And we all know how good Sri Lanka has been at getting no gold medals at recent games, or winning one thanks to drug cheats :D

True because in the past while the corrupt sports officials was stealing money and the criminal terrorist(LTTE)with the blessing of western hypocrats was chopping children and killing innocent people the main objective was survive.now the situation is different, better, good.

its unfortunate what happened to the gold.it was not like what happen to the the Australian cricket leg spin bowler in the 2003 world cup who failed test. the medication was given by unqualified person without his knowing "It is reported Police personnel attached to Kurunegala Police Station, had recorded a lengthy statement from the controversial medical practitioner. During the investigations Police had uncovered that the suspect was not an MBBS doctor as claimed before, but was only a Homeopathy medical practitioner with a medical qualification from India. The medical practitioner has also admitted to administering an injection of vitamin B supplement"

after that incident sport officials decided to screen all sportsmen and women who take part in future international level games at a cost of Rs. 22,000 (US $ 200) per a person.

Why would it be a disaster? We offer a safe, stable country with a very strong economy.

I can understand the sentiment against Australia hosting again after already hosting the event in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. The difference with 2018, is that is that we offer a location that is remarkably different to the four cities that have hosted here before. The Gold Coast is very different to the four previous hosts; which are largely the same kind of metropolis' on different scales. The Gold Coast has a significant point of difference. If it were Adelaide bidding, I doubt there would be as much public support.

Regardless, the CWGF should be very glad the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia have shown the desire to bid again.

Without the GC bid we'd be looking at automatically handing the Games to a clearly unstable, economically poor, unstable location with a capability far lower than Dehli and India.

Personally, as long as they are in a time zone where I can watch them on CBC(unlike those dang ones in India) I do not care WHERE it is.

But how do they go to Sri Lanka when they have Gold Coast? Australia did host in 2006 with Melbourne though. Only 4 years ago. Let it go to Sri Lanka because of that. Let's hope they do not produce a Delhi- anyone here think they will?

Sure, China IS investing in Sri Lanka, for logical projects like the airport and ship port. But as for stadiums? Do the Chinese really care for investing in stadiums in other countries for the sole purpose of major sporting events? Do they really care in their donating of stadiums in developing nations? These are only part of the bigger picture. The Chinese are doing this first and foremost as so they can clearly stamp their companies names and boast that they built this stadium. That's the core reason, they just want to boast that Chinese companies can easily build major projects and they're sort of cheating at it too by making most of them donations.

China is big, but it won't get you the Commonwealth Games, I'm sure of that. The fact that they're not part of the Commonwealth is partly justified, but other core factors such as lack of experience, the close farce of what was Delhi 2010, the proximity of the two cities with only a gap Commonwealth Games in between... these must all be taken into consideration.

Let them go to Hambantota because Melbourne hosted in 2006?

You have absolutely no idea about what you are talking about. You want the CGs to be voted to go to a country that cannot win one honest gold medal at the most recent CWGs, has reneged on its contractual arrangements to complete stadia as per a November 30th 2010 agreement with the ICC to have 3 stadia ready in time for full fit out for the 2011 cricket World Cup, that has barely enough infrastructure to support the existing inhabitants who were not that long ago reliant on overseas aid to repair their tsunami destroyed homes, as the murderous thug and his family that rules this little spot of a strategic tug of war between India and China uses the bid to big note his Soprano-like clan whilst the average Sri Lankan per capita income is $4778 (which makes their citizens individually poorer than countries such as Swaziland, Angola and Bhutan), and the Hambantota bid committee could't even find the organisational wherewithal to attend the briefings given by the CGF during the 2010 Delhi Games?!!!

You can almost excuse our Rajapaksan mouthpiece for his propaganda-inspired rubbish but to use your logic Detroit is sheer idiocy.

Do a little research before issuing such platitudes.

australia hosted the games in 2006 yes, but not only that ,the games have been hosted on 7 occasions in Oceania.which australia have hosted 4 out of them.(UK 5, Canada 4,New Zealand 3)This is really bad when thinking about the other 71 competing nations, which most are emerging nations. but you cant blame them for hosting because they had the facilities wealth and a good situation.... but things are different here now we have a great bid in the making from Hambantota http://www.hambantota2018.com/ know about it from thebidleader (which some people find hard to digest). lot of talented people are working on the bid which it will start talking in 2011 ;)

And dont get misguided by hate comments by some members inspired by anti sri lanka propaganda

(some member or members are ridiculously putting the post down its like saying we must get everything and others should not even talk about bidding

pathetic)

Actually oh mealy-mouth inarticulate Rajapaksan stooge if you actually provided some real and concrete evidence about the technical, economic, social and sporting capabilities of your poor and unfortunate country (to be saddled with a tragic civil war is bad enough, to be now exploited by the dictatorial class of one autocratic family is worse) then I like anyone else here would welcome a Sri Lankan hosted CGs. We would also welcome an Indian, Kenyan, Cypriot, Antiguan, Botswana or even Manx hosted CGs so long as they were equitable in every aspect.

Instead what we get is your unsupported jingoistic proclamations that would make Lord Haw Haw proud, setting the same kind of standards in the demonstration of informed and articulate advocacy of your compatriots bid as a 'butter is better' commercial. And when the failures of your local sporting authorities or the inequalities of your political masters are brought into sharp and documented relief you play the race card much like those in brown shirts did when Martin Van der Lubbe was accused of burning down the Reichstag in 1933.

Your own nation's press has questioned the validity of the Hambantota bid, your compatriot sportsmen and women have done nothing to add lustre to the limited sporting heritage that should be associated with hosting a CGs, and when all is said and done it won't be the people who deserve the most benefit from the expense of hosting such a farcical and dud event as a Hambantota 2018 CGs. It will be the rich acolytes of Papa Rajapaksa and fellow travellers such as yourself who are blinded by at best naivety and at worst ignorant bigotry who will glory in 10 days of excess brought on by some bizarre desire to consider hosting a minor sporting festival makes your regime worth paying attention to.

"poor and unfortunate country" its useless giving answers to this specially for a self brainwashed Misanthropy.im not pure perfect in this language which was given by the same people who shipped your ancestors.

So not only are you mad, a xenophobe, ignorant and unable to use any form of legible English (beyond that provided by the Twaddle version of BabelFish that you use to translate your garbled inanity) you also can't even be bothered to look at the sources for your own national media in all the posts that show the contempt that significant elements in your national print media hold for your deluded vision of a thousand year Rakapaksan SL founded on a totally irrelevant sporting festival.

And by the way not every Australian is a descendant of the English. I am proud to claim Scottish, Norwegian, English, German, Finnish and Russian heritage. So before making some dumbarse ignorant referral to 'the same people who shipped your ancestors' remember that unlike your tragic country we are multicultural enough to get past such simplistic associations with England. And of course we've been able to resolve or racial and social and political problems without relying on suicide bombers or assassinations, throwing political opponents in jail or konzentrationlager when one part of our populace loses out to another.

You've failed to give any evidence that would stand up to serious consideration of the capability of your over-exaggerated fishing village to do more than fail to deliver on construction deadlines, whilst serving as sodden patch of land manipulated by the Chinese for their strategic interests whilst Papa Rakapaksa and the whole filthy band of his family and acolytes enrich themselves. A photo of a half constructed two lane highway and a drawing in the jungle are the best you can offer...what a joke. And when your own media report that the ICC is pissed off because your local cricketing board and the government fecked up the promise to deliver all three stadia for the 2011 WC in 6 weeks times completed by November 30th you go as silent as a Rajapaksan human rights advocate.

So again, man up you deluded single brain-celled apologist for the bid that common sense forgot...give us some concrete evidence that is both quantifiably and qualifiably verifable that Hambantota's bid should be taken any further than the punch line in a Christmas cracker joke at the Commonwealth Games Federation's Xmas party. Your nation's athletes failed miserably at both the 2010 CGs and the 2010 Asiads, your bid city has hardly any accommodation for tourists, your venues are non-existent or delayed beyond promised dates and the only beneficiaries will be the loons and hangers-on from your circle of buffoons and crooks.

Have a nice day :)
