Glasgow 2014

Recommended Posts

I have a feeling the ceremony is going to be very minimalist, dunno why. Not that it's a bad thing, though. Also i like that tartan pattern in the border

They showed a "sneek peek" on TVNZ news tonight with performers at a secret location on a field performing something, and it didn't look minimalist.

They did say there will be a small tribute to Scotland in general BUT a major focus on the history of Glasgow...That looks interesting, there is supposed to be a ship building sequence in there...

I am looking for someone who lives in Glasgow or is going to Glasgow who would like to do some shopping for me at the Glasgow 2014 store and post it to Australia. I have tried to get the online store to send good to Australia but they have refused. I have also contacted a few ebay sellers selling Glasgow merchandise but none are able to help so this is a last resort.

Happy to pay in advance via paypal and also a little extra for your trouble and of course postage so if you’re interested please inbox me for more details.

Thanks in advance

If that fails, have you thought about using one of those services that provides a UK address for delivery and then they on ship it to Australia.

I know we have a couple of those here in New Zealand, I use one of them to get all of my Jack and Jones gear as they won't ship to NZ either.

Australia looks to have revised down their team...was near 500 than 400 at one stage. This always happens everywhere with last minute pull outs and other more lucrative events just to hard to avoid.

Glasgow 2014: Which is the strongest Commonwealth nation?

When it comes to the Commonwealth Games, which nation is the most successful?

Australia perhaps, given their proud sporting tradition and love of beating England at anything? South Africa, maybe? Or how about Canada?

Wrong, wrong and wrong again.

Officials insist records will stand despite defective pool floor

Commonwealth Games and FINA officials insist records set in the Glasgow pool will stand despite revelations that a technical hitch has left the floor stuck in an uneven position.

The Tollcross pool has a moveable floor that allows the depths to be changed. But the floor became stuck fast the day before competition began on Friday and can't be fixed until the completion of the swimming program for fear of rendering it unusable.

Because of the defect, the pool depth wouldn't be legal at a world championships or Olympic Games, which require a minimum depth of two metres for the entire 50 metres. But FINA, swimming's governing body, only requires a depth of 1.35m for other competitions, including the Commonwealth Games.

As it stands, the pool is currently two metres deep at the start, before sloping upwards to 1.88 metres at the 12-metre mark, at which point it drops off rapidly back down to two metres. The dip is clearly visible from the stands.

Glasgow 2014 spokesperson Jackie Brock-Doyle confirmed on Sunday there was an issue with the pool floor but was adamant it complied with regulations and no records would be called into question. Organisers have been in deep discussions with FINA technical delegate and vice-president Sam Ramsamy, who is in Glasgow.

"It's fully compliant. We've discussed it with the FINA technical delegate. It's fully compliant with FINA rules for the Commonwealth Games," Brock-Doyle told Fairfax Media. "There will be no impact on the competitors and records set here."

There have been a host of Games records and one able-bodied world record for the Australian women's 4 x 100m women's relay team, who broke a five-year-old supersuit mark on the first night of competition.

It appears that mark will stand but the situation is hardly ideal for a major international event, which has featured some of the best swimmers on the planet.

The floor was installed by Dutch company Variopool, which was alerted to the issue the day before competition. But the piston-system that drives the floating floor has become stuck and engineers are loathe to move it during competition in case it ends up in a position that contravenes FINA regulations.

It's understood pool management regards the situation as less than ideal but has little choice but to wait until the end of competition before trying to fix the problem.

A number of swimmers have noticed the issue, which has also caused some technical issues for the underwater camera.

Trinidad and Tobago veteran George Bovell, who has swum in the past three Olympic Games, said he had noticed the drop-off. But the swimmers had not received any official notification or warning about it, he said.

"I saw it. I think it's more about the competition here and everyone's facing the same factors."

A number of swimmers and team managers approached by Fairfax Media said they had not been alerted to the problem.

:D I reckon the Queen is at that age where she just doesn't give a s*** anymore. It's up there with the one she did at BBC HQ behind the news readers while they were doing a live bulletin!
