Glasgow 2014

Recommended Posts

Back to diving and any particular reason it wasn't incorporated in the Glasgow Aquatics centre. Seems rather short sighted if it's about saving money and limits prospects for events following the games surely - not least the 2018 Youth Olympics.

A diving pool already existed in Edinburgh which is barely 40 mins away so is still convenient for athletes/spectators.

The existing pool in Glasgow --Tollcross-- is being expanded. It is solely a swimming arena and there is no provions for diving.

Preparations for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow are on track and on budget but not all projects are free of risk, a financial watchdog has said.

Audit Scotland's latest progress report found that infrastructure projects were all forecast to be on time and within the approved £524m budget.

But it said more cash might be needed if problems emerged with the Athletes Village and Hampden athletics venue.

The watchdog said risks around the 2014 event were less than for other Games.

Audit Scotland said that when fieldwork for its report was carried out in November, "planning was generally where it should be at this stage and all venues and other infrastructure projects were forecast to be ready on time... and within budget".

The report noted, however, that there were "key risks in delivering some developments, including the Athletes' Village and the development of Hampden Park as a track and field athletics venue".

Security costs

Both are due to be completed less than five months before Glasgow hosts the Games in July and August 2014.

Audit Scotland said that "if difficulties arise more money may be needed to ensure they are ready in time".

The watchdog also said there was "a risk that security costs may be higher than expected based on the experience of other Games".

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot to be realised by Nerv

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Mascot is to be brought to life by digital agency Nerv, the organising committee has announced.

The mascot, which has been designed by the winner of a children competition, will be revealed this Autumn, and will now be refined and developed by Nerv.

The brief will include the design of the mascot’s signature pose, the mascot participating in all 17 of the sports included in the Games and a short film introducing the mascot as well.

Martin Reynolds, head of marketing for Glasgow 2014, said: “After an extensive search, culminating in a three-way competitive pitch, we are delighted to appoint creative digital agency nerv to lead the final design stage of our Glasgow 2014 mascot. Their approach was ambitious, innovative and engaging – all key qualities we hope to see realised in the mascot itself.

“This is a hugely exciting and highly visible project. Knowing the strength of nerv’s ambitions and ideas, we can’t wait to introduce our mascot to the world later this year.”

Cynan Clucas, nerv’s managing director said: “It's truly humbling to have been appointed to realise the Mascot for Glasgow 2014. The Commonwealth Games is a unique and inspiring event, and we look forward to delivering a mascot that embodies everything it represents. All of us at nerv are genuinely excited by the opportunity to bring the character to life and introduce it to children of all ages right across the Commonwealth.”

Schoolboy's Games tartan revealed

303639-glasgow-2014-commonwealth-games-tartan-revealed-410x230.jpg

The official tartan for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled by one of Scotland's strongest men.

Reigning World Highland Games Champion Gregor Edmunds took to the catwalk to model the design at Shawlands Academy in Glasgow.

It was designed by one of the school's pupils, Aamir Mehmood, 15, whose creation was selected from thousands by young people across Scotland.

Games organisers anticipate that the tartan will be used in the lead-up to and during Glasgow 2014. It is expected to feature in showcase moments such as the opening and closing ceremonies, medal ceremonies, welcome ceremonies for Commonwealth Games Associations and for merchandise and gifting.

Aamir incorporated blue, yellow, white and red to represent Scotland's national colours and used a green background to demonstrate the fact that 75% of Shawlands Academy is bilingual while around 50 different languages are spoken in the school.

He said: "It's an amazing feeling to know that my design is the official tartan for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It will be seen all around the world and I'm so privileged and proud to be part of this huge sporting event coming to Glasgow and Scotland."

As part of his entry, he described the design as suggesting that "we should put all conflicts and rivalries aside and celebrate the games being held in Glasgow and Scotland, just as all the different nations will come together in celebration of the Commonwealth Games".

It is estimated that more than one billion people worldwide will see the tartan in the run-up to and during Glasgow 2014. Pupils from 307 schools across Scotland entered their designs in the competition.

Edmunds, whose titles include two times world caber-tossing champion, said: "As a proud Scotsman when competing around Scotland and the world, I always wear a kilt and I've got to say that this tartan is one of the best I've ever seen.

"The colours and style are so bright and striking, it really is a well thought-out and stunning design. Aamir should be incredibly proud that his hard work and ability has been recognised in such a manner."

I love the idea of an official tartan.

Why didn't they do it for the London games? It IS the UK's, not just England's, event.
