Fiji's netball and rugby sevens teams will not compete at Glasgow 2014

March 24 - Fiji's netball and rugby sevens team will not compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, insidethegames has learned.

Following its reinstatement into the Commonwealth earlier this month, Reg Sanday, President of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC), appealed to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) asking them to allow the two teams to compete at the Games after they missed the qualification period.

But Peter Murphy, head of communications at the CGF, has told insidethgames it is simply too late for the teams to be given entry to the competition.

"Following receipt of a request from FASANOC to consider the possibility of the inclusion of rugby sevens and netball teams at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the CGF conferred with both the international sports federations concerned, the IRB and INF, as well as the Organising Committee in Glasgow," Murphy told insidethegames.

"After due consideration the CGF reaffirmed its earlier advice to FASANOC that it was not able to accede to its request.

"Formal advice of this decision was conveyed to FASANOC on Friday 21st March."

The first of more than 40 official merchandise stores for this summer's Commonwealth Games has opened.

Athletes and Glasgow 2014 bosses cut the ribbon at the city's Central Station shop this morning.

Games officials said the store is creating new jobs as part of a drive which will see several hundred temporary posts created in the city to handle the sale of merchandise.

Ty Speer, Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive, said: "Central Station is one of Glasgow's main commuter hubs with around 750,000 people passing through every week, making it the ideal place to showcase our range of Glasgow 2014 goods."

Weightlifter Peter Kirkbride, a Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 silver medallist, was among those attending the launch of the retail outlet.

Michael Cavanagh, chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland, said: "Team Scotland is anticipating massive levels of home support at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. What better way for the whole of Scotland to get behind the team, show their support and play their part in the team's success than wearing our traditional team colours and bearing our distinctive logo."

Wow, that's certainly different! Brave anyway. I get the feeling it's either going to be a stroke of explosive genius on the part of the ceremonies director or a bit of a random disconnected event. Looking forward to seeing how it's knitted in.

"One tower block will remain which is currently used to house people seeking asylum in the UK"

Better make that clear, otherwise people will think it's a repeat of the Sochi 5th ring!

I predict that there will be a Video Presentation during the Opening Ceremony, like a story of Glasgow and somewhere in the middle it will feature, that's my prediction.

Why do you capitalize random words in the middle of sentences?

That's the North American version of the spelling. Over here, it's with an S, not a Z.
